[Present status of Tsutsugamushi disease detection at regional public health laboratories--a comparison between the results from a questionnaire survey and the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System].

Tsutsugamushi disease has been a notifiable disease in Japan since the implementation of the Infectious Diseases Control Law in April 1999. In order to assess the role of public health laboratories in detecting Tsutsugamushi disease, a questionnaire regarding routine testing of suspected cases of Tsutsugamushi disease was sent to 73 regional public health laboratories (47 prefectural laboratories and 26 municipal laboratories) in July 2001. The response rate was 92% (67/73 laboratories). It was found that most prefectural laboratories are well prepared to routinely receive and test specimens o

Dengue: an escalating public health problem in Latin America.

Dengue infection is a significant and escalating public health problem in Latin America. Its re-emergence and subsequent rise in the region over the past 50 years has largely been caused by a combination of a lack of political will, the radical growth of urban populations, migration flow and insufficient financial resources. Its increased incidence has been compounded by climate change, poor sanitation and extreme poverty, which lead to more breeding sites of the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti. In order to control dengue effectively, an integrated approach incorporating vector management and en

Assessment of State, Local, and Territorial Zika Planning and Preparedness Activities - United States, June 2016-July 2017.

The emergency response to Zika virus disease required coordinated efforts and heightened collaboration among federal, state, local, and territorial public health jurisdictions. CDC activated its Emergency Operations Center on January 21, 2016, with seven task forces to support the national response. The State Coordination Task Force, which functions as a liaison between jurisdictions and federal operations during a response, coordinated the development of CDC Guidelines for Development of State and Local Risk-based Zika Action Plans, which included a Zika Preparedness Checklist (1). The checkl

Efficiency in mental health practice and research.

Limited financial resources, escalating mental health-related costs and opportunities for capitalizing on advances in health information technologies have brought the theme of efficiency to the forefront of mental health services research and clinical practice. In this introductory article to the journal series stemming from the 20th NIMH Mental Health Services Research Conference, we first delineate the need for a new focus on efficiency in both research and clinical practice. Second, we provide preliminary definitions of efficiency for the field and discuss issues related to measurement. Fin

[The historical meaning of serological surveys as a laboratory technology applied to the immunization campaigns. The case of poliomyelitis in Spain].

The aim of the paper is to analyse the introduction, use and diffusion of the serological surveys, a public health technology on the borderline between epidemiology and laboratory, in connection with poliomyelitis in Spain during the Francoism period. Within the framework of the "new history" of medical technologies and innovations, the serological surveys played an important role both in the improvement of knowledge on socio-demographic distribution and the health politics arena.

Primary care and public health a natural alliance? The introduction of the guidelines for obesity and undernutrition of the Dutch College of General Practitioners.

The prevalence of obesity and overweight is increasing globally and forms a huge public health problem. On the other hand, the prevalence of malnutrition or undernutrition is substantial, especially in nursing homes or in the elderly at home. Primary care and public health are separate disciplines. But in the field of nutrition and other lifestyle-related interventions, there are many direct and indirect interfaces for over- as well as undernutrition. The Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG) published the Practice Guideline Obesity in adults and children to lead GPs in this process and

Local veterinary diagnostic laboratory, a model for the one health initiative.

The San Diego County Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) is unique in its emphasis on protecting both human and animal health in San Diego County, and its use of interagency and community collaboration to create strong, effective public health programs. This article describes the ADDL core programs of avian and vector-borne disease surveillance, rabies testing, and animal abuse investigations and uses selected case studies to illustrate the need for a local veterinary diagnostic laboratory to safeguard the health of humans and animals. The ADDL serves as a role model for other local co

Appraisal of World Health Organization guidelines for priority infectious diseases with potential to cause public health emergencies.

OBJECTIVES: To map and assess the quality of guidelines developed by or in partnership with the WHO on infectious diseases with a high risk of causing public health emergencies. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional audit study. METHODS: A search of the WHO website and MAGICapp was conducted to identify guidelines on treatment, management, diagnosis, prevention, and surveillance of the WHO's priority list of diseases. When these sources yielded no results, the AI search engine Perplexity was used to expand the search for locally developed WHO partner guidelines. Eligible guidelines were evaluated by

Casting a wider net for countermeasure R&D funding decisions.

Among potential bioweapons attacks, endemic infectious diseases (that is, those naturally occurring diseases that afflict us every year), and a potential influenza pandemic, how should we apportion funding and resources for basic research and countermeasure development? To address this question, I argue for a "combined risk assessment" that considers bioweapons attacks with natural pandemics and endemic infectious disease. At present, risk assessments for bioweapons attacks are carried out separately from the assessments long carried out for endemic infectious diseases to make public health an

The "D&I Bridge": introducing a teaching tool to define the D, the I, and the why.

Interest in learning dissemination and implementation (D&I) science is at an all-time high. As founding faculty and fellows of a new center … I Bridge depicts D&I science as bridging what we know from public health knowledge to what we do in public health practice with intention and equity, and it spans over four distinct, inter-related gaps: the public health supply gap, the public health demand gap, the methodological/scientific gap, and the expertise capacity gap. The public health supply gap is addressed …

Recognition of illness associated with the intentional release of a biologic agent.

On September 11, 2001, following the terrorist incidents in New York City and Washington, D.C., CDC recommended heightened surveillance for any unusual disease occurrence or increased numbers of illnesses that might be associated with the terrorist attacks. Subsequently, cases of anthrax in Florida and New York City have demonstrated the risks associated with intentional release of biologic agents. This report provides guidance for health-care providers and public health personnel about recognizing illnesses or patterns of illnessthat might be associated with intentional release of biologic ag

Shaping future leaders: developing an MPH leadership curriculum through problem-based learning.

Leadership is essential to public health practice, yet few MPH programs offer structured, integrated approaches to cultivating leadership competencies. At the University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Leadership in Practice (LIP) MPH concentration responds to this gap by embedding problem-based learning (PBL) throughout a multi-course curriculum designed to prepare students for real-world leadership challenges. Drawing on interdisciplinary faculty expertise and a constructivist pedagogical philosophy, the LIP curriculum emphasizes systems thinking, strategic d…

An analytical study on the awareness, attitude and practice during the COVID-19 pandemic in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new variable of the Coronaviridae family. COVID-19 spreads primarily by contacting the virus either from a COVID-19-infected individual through coughing or sneezing or from COVID-19-contaminated surfaces. On March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced COVID-19 as a pandemic. The government of Saudi Arabia was among the first countries in the world to take quick and serious precautions. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has made the public aware of the virus transmission patterns and the importance of q

HIV/AIDS knowledge level, awareness of public health centers and related factors: a cross-sectional study among Brazilians in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Accurate information is essential so that HIV infection can be detected in time for initiation of HIV/AIDS treatment. Immigrants are at high risk for delayed HIV testing and diagnosis, but foreign residents in Japan also seem to face barriers to accessing HIV/AIDS care. We aimed to assess their knowledge level of HIV/AIDS and awareness of public health centers in Japan (PHCs), and to explore factors related to these items. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of Brazilians, the largest group of foreigners living in Shiga, using an anonymous, self-administered questionnair

Opioid use disorder: A public health emergency.

The treatment of patients with acute and chronic pain not attributed to cancer or end-of-life conditions is a challenge for many clinicians. Although CDC guidelines that focus on the primary care setting have provided critical recommendations, evidence-based guidance is lacking on optimal duration of opioid treatment for postoperative and acute care in specialty settings. Over the last 2 decades, the liberal use of opioids has resulted in many unintended consequences, including dependence and abuse, illicit distribution of legally and illegally prescribed opioid medication, progression to IV h

[Regulations in the struggle against the plague. Geneva facing the Great Plague of Marseille (1720-1723)].

In 1721, when Geneva is threatened by a terrible epidemic devastating the south of France, the physician Jean-Jaques Manget states that "The Magistrates must establish a good Policy in time of plague"; and asks himself how it is possible to carry on "without good Regulations?". The State Archives of Geneva hold a draft consisting of 72 articles concerning health policy meant to be applied in case of plague. This is a remarkable document that enables an overview of the city's organisation in times of plague; it also allows to analyse some of the medical and sanitary theories this organisation i
