NMR spectroscopic evidence for the intermediacy of XeF(3)(-) in XeF(2)/F(-) exchange, attempted syntheses and thermochemistry of XeF(3)(-) salts, and theoretical studies of the XeF(3)(-) anion.

The existence of the trifluoroxenate(II) anion, XeF(3)(-), had been postulated in a prior NMR study of the exchange between fluoride ion and XeF(2) in CH(3)CN solution. The enthalpy of activation for this exchange, ΔH(⧧), has now been determined by use of single selective inversion (19)F NMR spectroscopy to be 74.1 ± 5.0 kJ mol(-1) (0.18 M) and 56.9 ± 6.7 kJ mol(-1) (0.36 M) for equimolar amounts of [N(CH(3))(4)][F] and XeF(2) in CH(3)CN solvent. Although the XeF(3)(-) anion has been observed in the gas phase, attempts to prepare the Cs(+) and N(CH(3))(4)(+) salts of XeF(3)(-) have been unsucc

The decomposition of alpha-aminophosphine oxides to phosphonic acid derivatives (PIII).

Aminophosphine oxides and aminophosphonates are, in general, very stable compounds. However, following phosphorus-carbon bond cleavage in aqueous acidic media these compounds sometimes decompose to phosphonic acids derivatives (P(III)). Despite some controversy in the literature, careful analysis supported by theoretical studies leads to the conclusion that decomposition to P(III) derivatives proceeds via an elimination reaction.

Direct quantum dynamics using variational multi-configuration Gaussian wavepackets. Implementation details and test case.

We present here a direct quantum dynamics method using variational multi-configuration Gaussian wavepackets. Based on the efficient multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree wavepacket propagation algorithm, it uses on-the-fly quantum chemical calculation of the potential energy and its derivatives rather than fitted surfaces. Intermediate results are stored in a database so that expensive quantum chemical computations can be recycled. This method is intended to treat quantum effects in the photochemistry of large molecules and the use of Cartesian coordinates to perform direct dynamics is di

Photodegradation of hexachlorobenzene and theoretical prediction of its degradation pathways using quantum chemical calculation.

Experimentally determined photodegradation pathways of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a chlorinated aromatic compound, in hexane, 2-propanol (IPA), and methanol were compared with those predicted by quantum chemical calculation based on density functional theory (DFT), and the adequacy of the prediction method was evaluated. The experimental main degradation pathways of HCB were virtually the same for the three solvents and also agreed with the predicted main degradation pathways. In the DFT method, the main degradation product was the dechlorinated benzene at the position where the C-Cl bond was pr

Gas-phase acidities and O-H bond dissociation enthalpies of phenol, 3-methylphenol, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, and ethanoic acid.

Energy-resolved, competitive threshold collision-induced dissociation (TCID) methods are used to measure the gas-phase acidities of phenol, 3-methylphenol, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, and ethanoic acid relative to hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, and the hydroperoxyl radical using guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry. The gas-phase acidities of Delta(acid)H298(C6H5OH) = 1456 +/- 4 kJ/mol, Delta(acid)H298(3-CH3C6H4OH) = 1457 +/- 5 kJ/mol, Delta(acid)H298(2,4,6-(CH3)3C6H2OH) = 1456 +/- 4 kJ/mol, and Delta(acid)H298(CH3COOH) = 1457 +/- 6 kJ/mol are determined. The O-H bond dissociation enthalpy

Quantum mechanical determinations of reaction mechanisms, acid base, and redox properties of nitrogen oxides and their donors.

This chapter reviews computational methods based on quantum mechanics and commonly used commercial programs for the exploration of chemical phenomena, particularly in the field of nitrogen oxides. Examples from the literature are then used to demonstrate the application of these methods to the chemistry and biochemistry of various nitrogen oxides. These examples include determining reaction mechanisms using computed reaction energies, predicting rates of reactions using transition state theory, and determining chemical properties such as hydration equilibria, pKa's, and reduction potentials.

The reduction potential of nitric oxide (NO) and its importance to NO biochemistry.

A potential of about -0.8 (+/-0.2) V (at 1 M versus normal hydrogen electrode) for the reduction of nitric oxide (NO) to its one-electron reduced species, nitroxyl anion (3NO-) has been determined by a combination of quantum mechanical calculations, cyclic voltammetry measurements, and chemical reduction experiments. This value is in accord with some, but not the most commonly accepted, previous electrochemical measurements involving NO. Reduction of NO to 1NO- is highly unfavorable, with a predicted reduction potential of about -1.7 (+/-0.2) V at 1 M versus normal hydrogen electrode. These re

Quantum mechanical conformational analysis of heterocyclic analogues of norephedrine.

Studies on the conformation of several structural analogues of norephedrine, thiophene, carbazole and furan, were carried out using the differential PCILO method. The erythro-forms of these compounds possess minima on the conformation map corresponding to a gauche conformation with synclinal H-atoms. This result is in good agreement with the proton-proton coupling constants found in previous NMR-studies. H-NMR-studies suggest for the threo-isomers of the studied molecules an equilibrium between the trans- and gache-conformations of the ethanolamine chain. Present calculations agree fairly well

From bioavailability scarcity to energy barriers: limitations of anaerobic microbial reductive defluorination.

Reductive dehalogenases in organohalide-respiring bacteria underpin anaerobic bioremediation of chlorinated pollutants but are rarely effective for reductive defluorination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. However, the physicochemical basis for this selectivity remains unclear. Here, we integrate quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics to evaluate constraints on microbial reductive defluorination. The scarcity of naturally occurring organofluorines has imposed limited evolutionary selective pressure, explaining the absence of robust defluorination pathways. Using quantum mechanical cal

Evaluating Mechanical-Embedding ML/MM for Predicting Mutation Effects in Chorismate Mutase Catalysis.

Predicting how mutations alter enzyme catalysis remains a central challenge in enzymology and enzyme engineering. Although quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) simulations can in principle compute the activation free energy associated with enzymatic reactions, their high computational cost limits systematic studies across many variants. Here, we benchmark a mechanical-embedding machine learning potential/molecular mechanics (ML/MM) protocol for predicting mutation effects on chorismate mutase catalysis, a model system extensively studied both experimentally and computationally. QSym2: A Quantum Symbolic Symmetry Analysis Program for Electronic Structure.

Symmetry provides a powerful machinery to classify, interpret, and understand quantum-mechanical theories and results. However, most contemporary quantum chemistry packages lack the ability to handle degeneracy and symmetry breaking effects, especially in non-Abelian groups, and they are not able to characterize symmetry in the presence of external magnetic or electric fields. In this article, a program written in Rust entitled QSym2 that makes use of group and representation theories to provide symmetry analysis for a wide range of quantum-chemical calculations is introduced. With its ability

Quantum phase transition in a common metal.

The classical theory of solids, based on the quantum mechanics of single electrons moving in periodic potentials, provides an excellent description of substances ranging from semiconducting silicon to superconducting aluminium. Over the last fifteen years, it has become increasingly clear that there are substances for which the conventional approach fails. Among these are certain rare earth compounds and transition metal oxides, including high-temperature superconductors. A common feature of these materials is complexity, in the sense that they have relatively large unit cells containing heter

Anomalous Zero-Field Splitting for Hole Spin Qubits in Si and Ge Quantum Dots.

An anomalous energy splitting of spin triplet states at zero magnetic field has recently been measured in germanium quantum dots. This zero-field splitting could crucially alter the coupling between tunnel-coupled quantum dots, the basic building blocks of state-of-the-art spin-based quantum processors, with profound implications for semiconducting quantum computers. We develop an analytical model linking the zero-field splitting to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction that is cubic in momentum. Such interactions naturally emerge in hole nanostructures, where they can also be tuned by external el

Quantum-mechanical insights into sodium alginate gelation and AI-driven discovery of synthetic biomimetic analogs.

The functional versatility of sodium alginate (SA) in biomedical engineering is fundamentally governed by its sequence-dependent interaction with metal ions; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying these interactions remain incompletely understood. Herein, we establish a comprehensive molecular-level framework for SA and its synthetic biomimetic analogs by integrating density functional theory (DFT), artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted molecular design, molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and MM-PBSA free energy analysis. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that β-

Discriminating Seebeck sensing of molecules.

One of the fundamental challenges in molecular-scale sensors is the junction to junction variability leading to variations in their electrical conductance by up to a few orders of magnitude. In contrast, thermal voltage measurements of single and many molecule junctions show that this variation in the Seebeck coefficient is smaller. Particularly, the sign of the Seebeck coefficient is often resilient against conformational changes. In this paper, we demonstrate that this robust molecular feature can be utilised in an entirely new direction of discriminating molecular sensing of gas and bio-mol

Twist-controlled modulation of quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride.

Stacking and twisting two-dimensional materials have garnered enormous attention across the condensed matter and nanophotonic communities. The surge of interest is driven by emergence of photophysical phenomena from interlayer coupling. Here, we demonstrate that the twist df can modulate quantum emitters at room temperature. We use a van der Waals (vdW) stack of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and model the emission properties of quantum emitters as a function of the twist angle. Density functional theory results show that the embedded emitters are strongly influenced by the twist angle and the

First-Principles Predictions of Out-of-Plane Group IV and V Dimers as High-Symmetry, High-Spin Defects in Hexagonal Boron Nitride.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has been recently found to host a variety of quantum point defects, which are promising candidates as single-photon sources for solid-state quantum nanophotonic applications. Most recently, optically addressable spin qubits in h-BN have been the focus of intensive research due to their unique potential in quantum computation, communication, and sensing. However, the number of high-symmetry, high-spin defects that are desirable for developing spin qubits in h-BN is highly limited. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT) and quantum embedding theories to s
