Racial re-inscriptions? Examining the potentials and limitations of self-identification variables in German survey research.

In recent years, quantitative methods have become a central tool in the fight against racism in Germany, offering empirical evidence to support anti-discrimination efforts. Among these methods, especially self-identification has gained prominence as a way to capture racialized experiences more accurately and to empower marginalized visibilities. By drawing on critical theories of racism, this paper argues that while self-identification may appear to challenge essentialist thinking, it can also risk re-inscribing race by stabilizing fluid identities into fixed categories. These risks are partic…

Mental Health Outcomes of Discrimination among College Students on a Predominately White Campus: A Prospective Study.

Racial discrimination is a social stressor harmful to mental health. In this paper, we explore the links between mental health and interpersonal discrimination-related social events, exposure to vicarious racism via social media, and rumination on racial injustices using a daily diary design. We utilize data from a racially diverse sample of 149 college students with 1,489 unique time observations at a large predominantly White university. Results show that interpersonal discrimination-related social events predicted greater self-reported anger, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and loneliness bot…

Serious Illness Care Exclusion, Disclosure, and Trust For Older Gay Men and Caregivers in the Deep South.

CONTEXT: Older gay men in the Deep South experience serious illness within healthcare systems shaped by heteronormativity and structural racism. Although disparities in access and disclosure are documented, less is known about how negative or ambiguous healthcare encounters are interpreted in serious illness settings. OBJECTIVES: To explore how older gay men and their caregivers interpret experiences of exclusion, bias, communication gaps, and decision-making within serious illness care. METHODS: Using a community-based participatory research approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews…

Towards distinctions-based Indigenous health workforce reform in Canada: A comparative policy analysis.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous health workforce reform in Canada remains shaped by colonial jurisdictional fragmentation, Indigenous-specific racism, and underinvestment. Although cultural safety initiatives and recruitment supports have expanded, reforms remain uneven and poorly coordinated. OBJECTIVE: To compare recent Indigenous health workforce policy instruments in Canada and identify persistent gaps and policy directions for distinctions-based, culturally rooted reform. METHODS: We conducted a structured narrative policy review of publicly available legislation, strategies, and professional/re…

The Impact of Discrimination on Young Black Sexual Minority Men Living with HIV in the US South: Identifying Predictors of Internalized Stigma and Depressive Symptoms.

Young Black sexual minority men living with HIV (YBSMM+) consistently report reduced engagement in the HIV care continuum. YBSMM+ are also highly burdened by depressive symptoms, which are strongly associated with suboptimal HIV care outcomes. Yet, little is known about the processes that drive depression-related disparities among YBSMM+. Informed by Minority Stress Theory, we examined three indirect effects, assessing whether the associations between experiences of racism, heterosexism, and HIV-related discrimination and depressive symptoms were mediated by three corresponding forms of intern…

Using an Intersectional Approach to Explore the Lived Mental Health Experiences of Traveller Men Affected by Suicide in Ireland.

Rates of suicide are seven times higher among Traveller men, an Indigenous ethnic minority group in Ireland, compared with non-Traveller men. Several factors are implicated, including racism, social exclusion, discrimination, inadequate accommodation, unemployment, and lower educational attainment. Systemic and cultural barriers inhibit Traveller men from seeking support. This study addresses a gap in the literature by exploring the lived mental health experiences of Traveller men affected by suicide. Semi-structured interviews (n = 13; aged 19-50) were conducted with Traveller men affected by…

Home mortgage discrimination and incidence of triple-negative and Luminal A breast cancer among non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White females in California, 2006-2015.

PURPOSE: In the United States, Black females are burdened by more aggressive subtypes and increased mortality from breast cancer compared to non-Hispanic (NH) White females. Institutional racism may contribute to these inequities. We aimed to characterize the association between home mortgage discrimination, a novel measure of institutional racism, and incidence of Luminal A and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtypes among NH Black and NH White females in California metropolitan areas. METHODS: We merged data from the California Cancer Registry on females aged 20 + diagnosed with prima…

Racial Disparities in Birth and Lactation Outcomes Among Neonates with Congenital Heart Defects at a Regional Mid-Atlantic Heart Center.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding ways in which systemic racism impacts birth and lactation among neonates with congenital heart defects (CHD) is limited. Thus, we sought to examine racial disparities among a cohort of neonates with CHD by exploring associations between birth and lactation outcomes and individual and community-level indicators of systemic racism. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of retrospective electronic health record (EHR) data from hospitalized neonates who had cardiac surgery and resided in the same county as the pediatric hospital (n = 20; 2016-2020). Associations bet…

Examining adverse childhood experiences and Black youth's engagement in a hospital-based violence intervention program using administrative data.

BACKGROUND: Stemming from poverty and systemic racism, Black youth are disproportionately represented in hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) due to greater violence exposure. HVIPs are a critical intervention that have been shown to reduce rates of reinjury in urban hospitals and trauma centers across the United States; however, they are plagued by low enrollment and engagement rates. Few studies have examined factors related to engagement, particularly among Black youth. METHODS: Guided by Trauma Theory and Critical Race Theory, this study uses a retrospective cohort design…

Antiracism and positive intergenerational (infant) outcomes: A county-level examination of low birth weight and infant mortality.

Racism is associated with negative intergenerational (infant) outcomes. That is, racism, both perceived and structural, is linked to critical, immediate, and long-term health factors such as low birth weight and infant mortality. Antiracism-resistance to racism such as support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement-has been linked to positive emotional, subjective, and mental health outcomes among adults and adolescents. To theoretically build on and integrate such past findings, the present research asked whether such advantageous health correlations might extend intergenerationally to inf…

What's race got to do with it? Factors contributing to self-change from cocaine use disorder among Black adults.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial number of people with substance use disorders recover without formal treatment, though we know little about the process of self-change among Black adults with cocaine use disorder (CUD) and whether racism contributes to the development of CUD and these adults' process of self-change. METHODS: The study team conducted qualitative interviews with 29 Black adults using a narrative and phenomenological approach. At the time of the interview, all participants met criteria for DSM-5 CUD prior to the past year but did not meet criteria for CUD in the past year and reporte…

Relationship of early weaning and non-nutritive sucking habits with facial development.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic racism perpetuates health disparities and negatively impacts health care delivery and patient outcomes. Racism and bias can affect every aspect of clinical care, including history-taking, physical examination, laboratory interpretation, note-writing, oral presentation, and decision-making. Medical students must learn racism- and bias-mitigation skills early in their professional development to provide high-quality, equitable care. METHODS: In November 2021, senior medical students and faculty with expertise in promoting health equity and justice in medicine designed and…

Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence, Reproductive Coercion, and Reproductive Health Among American Indian and Alaska Native Women: A Narrative Interview Study.

Background: The disproportionately high prevalence of poor reproductive and sexual health outcomes among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women is related to histories of colonization, oppression, and structural racism. Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence (SV) contribute to these health outcomes. Materials and Methods: Narrative interviews were conducted with AI/AN women from four tribal reservation communities. Interviews explored connections among sexual and reproductive health, IPV, SV, reproductive coercion (RC), and pregnancy experiences as well as women's experie…

Integration of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Undergraduate Nursing Simulations.

BACKGROUND: Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is fundamental to ensuring nursing care meets the needs of diverse patients from various positionalities. The ability to access and integrate EDI in undergraduate nursing education has been limited due to the demographics of the local population. Culturally responsive education is required to reduce cultural bias and racism, promote patient safety, and develop cultural humility. METHOD: For this innovation, patient profiles for simulation-based experiences (SBEs) were co-created with expert community partners and integrated into a baccalaurea…

Reimagining Perinatal Mental Health: An Expansive Vision For Structural Change.

Diagnoses of depression, anxiety, or other mental illness capture just one aspect of the psychosocial elements of the perinatal period. Perinatal loss; trauma; unstable, unsafe, or inhumane work environments; structural racism and gendered oppression in health care and society; and the lack of a social safety net threaten the overall well-being of birthing people, their families, and communities. Developing relevant policies for perinatal mental health thus requires attending to the intersecting effects of racism, poverty, lack of child care, inadequate postpartum support, and other structural…

Beyond the anti-racist reason: a postcolonial perspective on pandemic politics.

This article interrogates the politics of the COVID-19 pandemic from a postcolonial perspective. One alarming concern during the pandemic is the rise of racism against Asians all over the world. However, little explored behind media reports are the legacies, tensions and challenges left by imperial domination inherited from the past, especially within the postcolonial regimes in Asia, such as Hong Kong and China. Drawing upon postcolonialism as a critical lens, this article makes perceptible the intractable issues of health politics. Postcolonial challenges shown by COVID-19 include immigratio…

Onset of natural menopause in African American women.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed predictors of the onset of natural menopause in African American women. METHODS: We used mailed questionnaires to collect data at baseline in 1995 and during follow-up from Black Women's Health Study participants. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to assess potential predictors-including experiences of racism-of the onset of natural menopause among 17 070 women aged 35 to 55 years and premenopausal in 1995. RESULTS: The hazard ratio (HR) was 1.43 for current smokers (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.24, 1.66) and 1.21 (95% CI = 1.06, 1.38) for ex-sm…
