Magnetic resonance imaging of bone marrow in sickle cell patients.

Assessment of the bone marrow in sickle cell patients with or without pain crises can be accomplished using a variety of imaging techniques. Conventional radiography is the least sensitive of all imaging modalities in the early stages of the bone marrow infarct. Radionuclide imaging using 99mTc sulfur colloid shows sharply demarcated photon-deficient regions that are slow to resolve. Cumulative exposure to ionizing radiation would be of concern if repeated examinations with conventional x-rays and radionuclides were carried out. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive technique that …

The value of angiography in diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum: case report.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and usually produces no symptoms, although the classic symptom is painless rectal bleeding in a child. Because most symptomatic diverticula in children contain ectopic gastric tissue, radionuclide imaging using a technetium 99m pertechnetate scan is considered to be the method of choice. However, a bleeding Meckel's diverticulum may not be detected by pertechnetate imaging despite the presence of ectopic gastric mucosa. When the scan is negative, visceral angiography is an alternative procedure for detecting Meckel'…

Functional liver imaging with asialoglycoprotein receptors and serum hyaluronate in a patient with amyloidosis.

A 47-year-old man with primary amyloidosis was admitted with abdominal pain. A new radionuclide liver imaging technique using Technetium-99m diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid-galactosyl human serum albumin, was performed and the serum hyaluronate concentration was measured. Although ordinary laboratory tests revealed only slight abnormalities, the uptake of the radiolabelled ligand for hepatocyte asialo-glycoprotein receptors was decreased, and marked hepatomegaly was revealed. Furthermore, the serum hyaluronate level was elevated. Histological examination of a hepatic needle biopsy specimen

Targeted PET Imaging of Atherosclerosis via Low-Density Lipoprotein Click Chemistry with Nanoparticles.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) plays a central role in the development of atherosclerosis, making its detection critical for cardiovascular disease management. Radionuclide imaging of LDL offers distinct advantages over other modalities but remains limited by poor specificity and the need for long-lived isotopes. We present a click chemistry-based PET imaging strategy using gallium-68 (68Ga), a short-lived radionuclide, for the specific detection of LDL accumulation in atherosclerotic plaques. The approach relies on a two-step inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction between trans-cycloocte…

Nuclear imaging of solid hepatic masses.

This review has focused on the unique role of radionuclide scintigraphy in characterization of hepatic mass lesions. Radionuclide scintigraphy, unlike most other imaging modalities, is based on specific physiological and biochemical properties of each pathological entity that affects the liver. Hepatic scintigraphy, with its widespread availability, noninvasive nature, and relatively low cost is a powerful adjunct to other imaging techniques in the investigation of hepatic mass lesions. We have reviewed clinical presentation and characteristic findings of most hepatic lesions and have describe

Acidity-Activated Charge Conversion of 177Lu-Labeled Nanoagent for the Enhanced Photodynamic Radionuclide Therapy of Cancer.

Nanomaterials in combination with radionuclide therapy (RNT) provide new opportunities for cancer treatment. However, nanomaterials with efficient tumor accumulation have been less exploited for effective radionuclide-based therapy. Here, we report glycol chitosan-based nanoparticles (GCP-NPs) with acidic pH-dependent surface charge conversion for efficient radionuclide-based combination therapy. The nanoplatform can change the surface charge of nanoparticles from slight negative to positive in the acidic tumor microenvironment, which facilitates cellular internalization and penetration and th

[Clinical evaluation of 99mTc-HMPAO labeled leukocyte imaging in ulcerative colitis].

Inflammatory imaging using 99mTc-HMPAO-labeled mixed leukocytes was assessed for use in treating 11 cases diagnosed as ulcerative colitis: 10 cases with total colitis and 1 with left-sided colitis. They consisted of 8 patients with relapse-remitting type and 3 with chronic continuous type. Radionuclide abdominal images were obtained at 1 hr, 4 hr and 24 hr after intravenous injection of 200 MBq prepared 99mTc leukocytes. Obvious colonic activity noted at 4 hr served as the basis for positive comparative criterion in the present study. The diagnostic efficacy of radionuclide imaging was compare…

The research progress on radionuclides in osteoporosis diagnosis and drug efficacy monitoring.

Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease that seriously affects the quality of life and health of patients. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), have limitations in early detection and dynamic monitoring, making it difficult to meet clinical needs. This paper focuses on the potential of radionuclide imaging techniques, such as Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), in the early diagnosis of osteoporosis. The paper further elaborates on the importance of radionuclides in evaluating the therapeu…

Perturbed Angular Correlation as a Tool to Study Precursors for Radiopharmaceuticals.

One of the key components of radiopharmaceuticals for targeting imaging and therapy is a stable bifunctional chelating system to attach radionuclides to selective delivery systems. After-effects of radioactive decay can cause the release of a radioactive isotope from its chelation agent. Perturbed angular correlation (PAC) of γ-rays has become a unique technique to study the behavior of complexes formed between a chelating agent and radionuclide in vivo (in real time) over a relevant range of concentrations (10-12 M). In the present work, four radionuclides, 111In, 111mCd, and 152, 154Eu, were

Update on nuclear medicine in end-of-life care of infants and children: radionuclide perfusion studies in the determination of death by neurological criteria (DNC).

"Death by neurologic criteria" (DNC), a condition previously described as "brain death", accounts for approximately 21% of deaths in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). DNC is primarily a clinical assessment, defined by the irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain including the brainstem. When physical examination and apnea testing, the standard components of DNC assessment, cannot be completed in full, ancillary investigations are required to complement and complete the process. Amongst accepted ancillary tests, radionuclide perfusion studies exhibit some of the highe

Heterogeneous tissue in the thyroid fossa on ultrasound in infants with proven thyroid ectopia on isotope scan--a diagnostic trap.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid imaging is of proven help in establishing a diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism in infants. US often shows tissue in the thyroid fossa when radionuclide scintigraphy reveals only ectopic uptake. OBJECTIVE: Our hypothesis was that the use of US alone could lead to the mistaken diagnosis of normal or dysplastic thyroid in cases of scintigraphy-proven thyroid ectopia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We undertook a detailed retrospective review and analysis of imaging and concurrent biochemistry in infants with thyroid ectopia, confirmed by radionuclide scintigraphy. RESULTS: Eigh

Diagnostic Positron Emission Tomography Imaging with Zirconium-89 Desferrioxamine B Squaramide: From Bench to Bedside.

Molecular imaging with antibodies radiolabeled with positron-emitting radionuclides combines the affinity and selectivity of antibodies with the sensitivity of Positron Emission Tomography (PET). PET imaging allows the visualization and quantification of the biodistribution of the injected radiolabeled antibody, which can be used to characterize specific biological interactions in individual patients. This characterization can provide information about the engagement of the antibody with a molecular target such as receptors present in elevated levels in tumors as well as providing insight into

Diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible. A report of two cases with emphasis on scintigraphic approaches.

Aneurysmal bone cyst is rarely found in the mandible, and roentgenographic diagnosis of this condition is not easily made. In this report, the diagnostic value of bone scintigraphy and radionuclide angiography and CT imaging in two cases of aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible are discussed. Bone scintigraphy with Tc-99m MDP demonstrated ring-like or doughnut-pattern accumulation of radioactivity, which corresponded to the expansile character of the bony lesion. The accumulation of radioactivity was intensive in the peripheral region despite the fact that the lesion was benign. Furthermore, th

PET Molecular Imaging: A Holistic Review of Current Practice and Emerging Perspectives for Diagnosis, Therapeutic Evaluation and Prognosis in Clinical Oncology.

PET/CT molecular imaging has been imposed in clinical oncological practice over the past 20 years, driven by its two well-grounded foundations: quantification and radiolabeled molecular probe vectorization. From basic visual interpretation to more sophisticated full kinetic modeling, PET technology provides a unique opportunity to characterize various biological processes with different levels of analysis. In clinical practice, many efforts have been made during the last two decades to standardize image analyses at the international level, but advanced metrics are still under use in practice.
