The purpose of this report is to emphasize the possibility of false-negative biopsies for testicular intraepithelial neoplasia (TIN) in men with high-risk features of testicular cancer and to review the relevant literature. At the Norwegian Radium Hospital patients in this category are offered the chance to undergo a testicular biopsy. A patient is described who had a normal testicular biopsy a decade before presenting with an invasive testicular cancer. OBJECTIVE: To discuss the clinical presentation of metastases in the scapula and/or humerus resulting from renal cell carcinoma and the courses of treatment available.
PATIENTS: A series of 35 patients with humeral or scapular metastases from renal cell carcinoma, treated at The Norwegian Radium Hospital (NRH) during an 11-year period, is reviewed. Two case reports are examined in detail.
RESULTS: The median survival was 12 months (range 1-88) from the time of diagnosis of metastasis. Three patients lived for more than 50 months.

A series of 151 patients with stage 0 and I glottic carcinomas treated during the period of 1965-1983 at the Radium Centre and the ENT-Department in Odense was analysed. The 5-year survival--corrected for intercurrent deaths--was 99%, with only 2 deaths from laryngeal cancer being observed so far. Nineteen patients developed recurrences which were treated with 11 partial and 7 total laryngectomies, while one patient received palliative treatment only. Fou … ords of patients with cervical carcinoma were reviewed with respect to positioning of intracavitary radium, which was thought to be responsible for the development of radiation-induced plexopathies. Radiation therapy and/or systemic chemotherapy provided relief of pain and improvement of neurologic deficits in three patients with metastatic involvement.

Four patients with primary reticulum-cell sarcoma of the cervix were described. One patient was treated with radical hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy. The pelvic lymph nodes contained metastatic cancer and the patient died shortly after disseminating disease. An isotope generator to produce 228Ac from 228Ra was developed using a cation exchange resin column eluted with an acetate-diethylenetriaminpentaacetic acid buffer. The elution behavior of 228Ac on the column was studied with solutions of various pHs to select the optimal conditions. Two identical isotope generators were eluted for 47 days with over 100 mL of eluant with no detectable 228Ra breakthrough and high 228Ac yields (∼95%). The separation requires only biocompatible reagents and is performed at pH 4.6, conditions suitable for radiopharmaceutical studies of Ac.

Sections of lumbar vertebral bodies of young adult beagle dogs have been analyzed autoradiographically to characterize and quantify the local distribution of 226Ra by means of a scanning microscope photometer. The animals received a single injection of 355 kBq/kg body weight and were serially sacrificed at 5 to 1381 days postinjection. It is estimated that bone loss occurs in 70 % of all patients dying from cancer, causing a significant disease burden in cancer patients.
