The treponemal haemagglutination (THA) test has been used for 11 years as a routine test for syphilis at a central serology laboratory. Among patients with untreated early syphilis the antibodies detected by the THA test usually appeared later or were of relatively lower titre than those detected by the reagin tests. To establish the frequency of necrotizing funisitis in congenital syphilis, we conducted a prospective descriptive study of maternal syphilis in Bolivia by testing 1,559 women at delivery with rapid plasma reagin (RPR). A retrospective review of 8,100 serologic tests for syphilis ordered during a 42-month period yielded positive rapid plasma reagin test results in 127 patients (1.6 percent) and a positive fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption reaction in 91 patients (1.1 percent).
