RNN-based detection of IoT malware using diverse feature engineering methods.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly expanded, introducing critical security vulnerabilities due to increasingly sophisticated malware that traditional detection methods struggle to identify. To enhance malware detection in IoT environments, we developed a framework leveraging recurrent neural networks (RNNs) integrated with advanced preprocessing and multilevel feature engineering techniques, including label encoding, MinMax scaling, TF-IDF, bag-of-words, word2vec, and principal component analysis. We evaluated three distinct RNN architectures on the UNSW-NB15 dataset via stratified fivef…

Role of medial cortical networks for anticipatory processing in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Recurrent anticipation of ominous events is central to obsessions, the core symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet the neural basis of intrinsic anticipatory processing in OCD is unknown. We studied nonmedicated adults with OCD and case matched healthy controls in a visual-spatial working memory task with distractor. Magnetoencephalography was used to examine the medial cortex activity during anticipation of to-be-inhibited distractors and to-be-facilitated retrieval stimuli. In OCD anticipatory activation to distractors was abnormally reduced within the posterior cingulate and fu

Pathological Priming and Developmental Heterochrony as Organizing Concepts in Human iPSC Models of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition in which diverse genetic risk factors converge on molecular pathways governing early brain development. Human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) and brain organoid models now permit direct interrogation of these pathways in patient-derived neural tissue and, in a subset of studies, reveal alterations in neural progenitor proliferation, cortical neurogenesis, synaptic maturation, and network excitability. A landmark iPSC study in macrocephalic idiopathic ASD introduced the concept of pathological priming of neural

Neural divergence between individuals with and without minor depression during dynamic emotion processing: a movie-fMRI Study.

Research on the neuropathological mechanisms underlying minor depression (MD), particularly in individuals with a history of recurrent minor depressive episodes, is very limited. This study focuses on the abnormality in processing real-life emotional stimuli among individuals with MD. Thirty-two individuals with MD and 31 normal controls (NC) were recruited and underwent comprehensive clinical interview, cognitive assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. During functional MRI scanning, subjects watched positive, negative, and neutral emotional movie clips. We used the inter-subj

A Sliding Window-Based CNN-BiGRU Approach for Human Skeletal Pose Estimation Using mmWave Radar.

In this paper, we present a low-cost, low-power millimeter-wave (mmWave) skeletal joint localization system. High-quality point cloud data are generated using the self-developed BHYY_MMW6044 59-64 GHz mmWave radar device. A sliding window mechanism is introduced to extend the single-frame point cloud into multi-frame time-series data, enabling the full utilization of temporal information. This is combined with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for spatial feature extraction and a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU) for temporal modeling. The proposed spatio-temporal information fusio

Theory of mind in epilepsy.

Epilepsy is characterized by recurrent, chronic, and unprovoked seizures. Epilepsy has a significant negative impact on a patient's quality of life even if seizures are well controlled. In addition to the distress caused by seizures, patients with epilepsy (PwE) may suffer from cognitive impairment with serious social consequences such as poor interpersonal relationships, loss of employment, and reduced social networks. Pathological changes and functional connectivity abnormalities observed in PwE can disrupt the neural network responsible for the theory of mind. Theory of mind is the ability

Adaptive erasure of spurious sequences in sensory cortical circuits.

Sequential activity reflecting previously experienced temporal sequences is considered a hallmark of learning across cortical areas. However, it is unknown how cortical circuits avoid the converse problem: producing spurious sequences that are not reflecting sequences in their inputs. We develop methods to quantify and study sequentiality in neural responses. We show that recurrent circuit responses generally include spurious sequences, which are specifically prevented in circuits that obey two widely known features of cortical microcircuit organization: Dale's law and Hebbian connectivity. In

Functional hierarchy underlies preferential connectivity disturbances in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia may involve an elevated excitation/inhibition (E/I) ratio in cortical microcircuits. It remains unknown how this regulatory disturbance maps onto neuroimaging findings. To address this issue, we implemented E/I perturbations within a neural model of large-scale functional connectivity, which predicted hyperconnectivity following E/I elevation. To test predictions, we examined resting-state functional MRI in 161 schizophrenia patients and 164 healthy subjects. As predicted, patients exhibited elevated functional connectivity that correlated with symptom levels, and was most promin

Predicting Breast Cancer Events in Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) Using Generative Adversarial Network Augmented Deep Learning Model.

Standard clinicopathological parameters (age, growth pattern, tumor size, margin status, and grade) have been shown to have limited value in predicting recurrence in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) patients. Early and accurate recurrence prediction would facilitate a more aggressive treatment policy for high-risk patients (mastectomy or adjuvant radiation therapy), and simultaneously reduce over-treatment of low-risk patients. Generative adversarial networks (GAN) are a class of DL models in which two adversarial neural networks, generator and discriminator, compete with each other to generate

Same movies, different stories: aberrant brain state dynamics during naturalistic emotional stimuli in depression.

BACKGROUND: Affective social interaction relies on aligning emotional and cognitive responses with others, reflected in synchronized neural network states. Major depressive disorder (MDD), characterized by social withdrawal and emotional isolation, may impair this capacity. This study aimed to test whether individuals with first-episode, drug-naïve MDD exhibit disrupted shared neural representations during naturalistic emotional experiences, and to identify which specific brain-state dynamics underlie such alterations. METHODS: Participants with MDD (n = 55) and healthy controls (HCs, n = 62)

Neural correlates of emotional processing in panic disorder: A mini review of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Panic Disorder (PD) is mainly characterized by recurrent unexpected panic attacks. Although the presence of emotional functioning deficits in PD is well established, their neuronal bases are still less known. Therefore, in this review, we aim to summarize the available functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies investigating the neural correlates associated with the processing of facial emotional expressions in patients with PD. METHODS: A comprehensive search on PubMed was performed and 10 fMRI studies meeting our inclusion criteria were included in this review. RESULT

Learning Deep Temporal Representations of Socioeconomic Deprivation.

This study focuses on AI-based quantification of socioeconomic disparities within society. Specifically, we investigate whether embeddings derived from a recurrent neural network (RNN), trained on the features of a deprivation index, capture more information on deprivation than traditional expert-based indices. Using the German Index of Socioeconomic Deprivation (GISD) as a benchmark, predictive performance is evaluated through survival analyses in three independent cancer cohorts. RNN embeddings consistently outperformed the GISD score. The largest improvement in overall survival prediction w

A unified model of short- and long-term plasticity: Effects on network connectivity and information capacity.

Activity-dependent synaptic plasticity is a fundamental learning mechanism that shapes the connectivity and activity of neural circuits. Exi … equency dependence of long-term plasticity plays a crucial role in shaping the self-organization of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and their information processing through the emergence of sink and source nodes. We applied the SL-STDP rule to RNNs and found that neurons in the SL-STDP network self-organize into distinct firing rate clusters, stabilizing the dynamics. We …

Deep memory for deep threats: A novel architecture combining GRUs and deep learning models for IDS.

The increasing volumes and sophistication of cyber threats, particularly Denial-of-Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, pose significant dangers to contemporary network structures, particularly the Internet of Things (IoT) environment. Conventional Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are also becoming obsolete because they perform detection in a built-in manner and are unable to capture the time trends of dynamic changes of threats. To eliminate such shortcomings, a new hybrid deep learning architecture named the Neural Turing Machine-Gated Recurrent Unit (NTM-GRU) mod
