A study of nerve conduction velocity in diabetic patients and its relationship with tendon reflexes (T-Reflex).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Neuropathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus. Neuropathy can cause sensory deficit, neurological disorder, organ ulcers, osteomyelitis, and amputation. Therefore, neurological examinations, determining the nerve conduction velocity and performing sensory and motor tests are important for timely diagnosis and treatment. The present study aimed to investigate the nerve conduction velocity in diabetic patients and its relationship with tendon reflexes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was observational-cross sectional research carried …

Effect of straining on diaphragmatic crura with identification of the straining-crural reflex. The "reflex theory" in gastroesophageal competence.

BACKGROUND: The role of the crural diaphragm during increased intra-abdominal pressure is not exactly known. We investigated the hypothesis that the crural diaphragm undergoes reflex phasic contraction on elevation of the intra-abdominal pressure with a resulting increase of the lower esophageal pressure and prevention of gastro-esophageal reflux. METHODS: The esophageal pressure and crural diaphragm electromyographic responses to straining were recorded in 16 subjects (10 men, 6 women, age 36.6 +/- 11.2 SD years) during abdominal hernia repair. The electromyogram of crural diaphragm was reco…

Antro-pancreatic reflexes: long- and short-route reflexes in exocrine and endocrine pancreatic secretion in dogs.

Pancreatic exocrine secretion is known to be facilitated by gastric antral distension via long- and short-route reflexes. In this study, we studied the effects of gastric distension on intra-pancreatic nerve discharges and blood insulin level as well as pancreatic exocrine secretion. Mongrel dogs were anesthetized with ketamine and thiopental, and immediately decerebrated. This study consisted of two series of experiments. In the first series, efferent discharges in an intra-pancreatic nerve branch were recorded, and its responses to antral distension were analyzed. In the second series, effec…

Role of positive urethrovesical feedback in vesical evacuation. The concept of a second micturition reflex: the urethrovesical reflex.

Upon feeling the urge to urinate, the urinary bladder contracts, the urethral sphincters relax and urine flows through the urethra. These actions are mediated by the micturition reflex. We investigated the hypothesis that vesical contraction is maintained by positive feedback through continuous flow of urine through the urethra, and that the cessation of urine flow aborts detrusor contraction. Normal saline was infused into the urinary bladders of 17 healthy volunteers (age 35.2 years+/-4.2(SD); ten women and seven men) at a rate of 100 ml/min. On urge, which occurred at a mean volume of 408.6…

Sensitivity of pulmonary chemo reflexes and lung inflation reflexes to repetitive stimulation and to inhibition with lidocaine and morphine.

To study reflex responses caused by stimulation of pulmonary C-fibers and lung inflation, we used a preparation in which the left pulmonary artery and veins were ligated and cannulated and the right and left bronchi were cannulated separately in open-chest dogs. These experiments were performed to establish whether the reflex responses to injections of 150 micrograms of capsaicin through the left pulmonary circulation and inflations of this left lung to 30 cm H2O would be diminished if repeated frequently. Furthermore, the sensitivities of the reflex responses evoked by these capsaicin injecti…

Motor reflex responses elicited by cutaneous stimulation in the regenerating nerve of man: axon reflex or ephaptic response?

In 57 of 60 nerves (29 median and 31 ulnar) sutured at the wrist, forearm and arm, we recorded motor responses in thenar or hypothenar muscles by electrical stimulation of the corresponding fingers. Recordings were made at different times during the process of regeneration, ranging from 3 months up to 11 years. The responses showed a constant shape and latency to every stimulation (simple or repetitive). The latency was shorter the more distal the level of injury and the greater the elapsed time from the reinnervation. The point of "reflexion" of the responses is at or very near the line of ne…

Changes of Reflex, Non-reflex and Torque Generation Properties of Spastic Ankle Plantar Flexors Induced by Intelligent Stretching.

Spasticity, contracture, and muscle weakness are major sources of disability in stroke. Changes of torque-generating capacity as well as reflex and non-reflex properties of ankle plantar flexors induced by strenuous stretching in chronic hemiplegia were investigated. Twelve subjects with a unilateral stroke and 10 healthy controls underwent 30 minutes of strenuous intelligent stretching treatment. Reflex and non-reflex components of spastic hypertonia and force-generating capacity of ankle plantar flexors were investigated. Dorsiflexion (DF) range of motion (ROM) was increased (p=0.002) and pa…

Reflex and non-reflex elements of hypertonia in triceps surae muscles following acquired brain injury: implications for rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Following adult onset acquired brain injury, the triceps surae muscles tend to become shortened and exhibit increased resistance to passive lengthening; a phenomenon that has been termed 'hypertonia'. Spasticity (velocity dependent tonic reflex hyper-excitability) has traditionally been considered a major component of hypertonia. In addition, unmodulated descending excitatory influences on the alpha motorneurone pool may result in inappropriate or excessive muscle activity (dystonia). Non-reflex changes, secondary to the brain injury, and as a consequence of subsequent immobility, …

Effects of HCl on esophageal reflex reponses.

The purpose of this manuscript is to review all of the experimental studies on the effects of intraluminal HCl on defined esophageal reflexes. Intraluminal presence of HCl in the esophagus activates the slowly adapting touch sensitive mechanoreceptors of the mucosa, which are necessary for the esophageal phase of swallowing to always follow the pharyngeal phase. Intraluminal HCl sensitizes and activates the slowly adapting touch/tension mechanoreceptors of the mucosa which stimulate the pharyngeal phase of swallowing, and activate contractions of the esophagus orad of the stimulus in the stria…

Cough: A Reflex That Disrupts Interpersonal Communication.

OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated the impact of chronic cough on the communication skills of patients. METHODS: Two hundred adult patients with chronic cough (group 1, study group) and 196 healthy adult subjects without cough (group 2, control) were included in the study. The Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ) and Communicative Competence Scale (CCS) were administered to both groups. RESULTS: Leicester Cough Questionnaire scores for the chronic cough group were significantly lower than those of the control group ( P < 0.000). Since higher scores indicate better QoL, Group 1's QoLs

Static cervico-ocular reflex in healthy humans.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic cervico- (COR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) contribute to stabilise visual images in the retina. The gain in dynamic COR is small in healthy individuals but increases in patients with vestibular dysfunction. Conversely, static COR has not been directly observed in healthy individuals. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the presence of static COR and quantify it in normal individuals in the roll plane. METHODS: Eleven healthy participants were included in the study. Eye torsions were measured using video oculography to evaluate the static COR induced by lateral neck flexion dur…

Pupil light reflex dynamics in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Visual disturbance is common symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), and defective pupil light reflex (PLR) is an anticipated contributing factor that may be associated to the presence of autonomic dysfunction, which is a common non-motor feature of PD. Studies investigating the intercorrelation between PLR and dysautonomia in PD are limited. METHODS: The aim of this study was to investigate differences of PLR parameters, measured by eye-tracker, between patients with PD, with and without signs of dysautonomia, and healthy controls (HC). In total, 43 HC and 50 patients with PD were…

Musicogenic seizures-STXBP1 encephalopathy with reflex seizures.

Mutations in the gene encoding syntaxin binding protein 1 (STXBP1) have been implicated in a wide variety of epileptic encephalopathies. Although the recognized phenotypes of patients with STXBP1 encephalopathies have broadened in recent years, no case of reflex seizures, particularly musicogenic seizures, has been reported in the literature. We present an 18-year-old woman with STXBP1 encephalopathy and seizures that are stereotypically reproducible in response to a variety of audible stimuli. An 18-year-old woman with a history of profound intellectual disability, confirmed STXBP1 genetic de…
