We evaluated the ocular and visual status in a group of patients with a non-surgically treated blowout fracture. Clinical examination with refraction, test of binocular function, and tear film evaluation was performed in 23 patients. These values were statistically correlated with the orbital volume measurements and ocular finding from the patient records at presentation. About 50% of the study group was symptomatic due to low visual acuity from refractive errors and decompensated phorias as a consequence of the blowout fracture. Several patients displayed changes in tear film production. Ther

PURPOSE: Ocular morbidity in children hinders their overall development. The prevalence and pattern vary amongst countries as well as within a country. Many ocular diseases if diagnosed and treated on time can prevent ocular morbidity in children to a large extent. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and pattern of ocular diseases in children (7-14 years) presenting to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal, a tertiary care teaching hospital in central India.
METHODS: This is a single-center, hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted from June 2018 to August

A comparatively high incidence of ocular and orbital abnormalities has been reported in persons with Down syndrome. Eighty six children (50% male, 50% female) with Down syndrome in several institutions for individuals with learning difficulties (age range 5-18 years, mean 12.5) were examined for visual impairment in order to relate the ocular impairment to the level of learning difficulty. 6% had mild, 7% moderate, 45% severe and 42% profound learning difficulty. 9% of the children had no refractive errors. A significant (P < 0.01) positive correlation was found between progressive amounts of

This study considered two questions associated with intraocular lens (IOL) power and refraction: (1) Given a refraction with a particular IOL in the eye, what will be the refraction for the IOL or another IOL if located differently with regard to tilt or anterior-posterior position? (2) For a target refraction, what is the power of another IOL if located differently with regard to tilt or position? A thin lens technique was developed to address these questions. For the first question, light was traced through the initial correcting spectacle lens to the cornea, refracted at the cornea, transfe

Refractive error is a common ophthalmic disease in children. It refers to the mismatch between the axial length and the refractive power that results in visual blur, which is usually driven by the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. The impacts of pregnancy and puerperium-related factors on refractive error in children have gradually gained attention. According to the different stages of pregnancy, this review summarizes the impacts of four aspects on refractive error in children, including lifestyle during pregnancy, complications and comorbidities during pregnancy, adverse preg

Contact lenses in the future will likely have functions other than correction of refractive error. Lenses designed to control the development of myopia are already commercially available. Contact lenses as drug delivery devices and powered through advancements in nanotechnology will open up further opportunities for unique uses of contact lenses. This review examines the use, or potential use, of contact lenses aside from their role to correct refractive error. Contact lenses can be used to detect systemic and ocular surface diseases, treat and manage various ocular conditions and as devices t

PURPOSE: To compare the vision needs of children wearing and not wearing eyeglasses who failed school-based vision screening.
METHODS: Students aged 4 to 16 years in 41 Baltimore City schools were screened using distance visual acuity (VA) and photoscreening. Students failing screening underwent school-based non-cycloplegic examination. We compared students who were wearing eyeglasses at failed screening with those not wearing eyeglasses with respect to age, sex, right-eye refractive error, right-eye presenting, and best-corrected VA (BCVA).
RESULTS: A total of 2176 students failed screening

PURPOSE: A progressive power lens (PPL) has a relatively complex power distribution, with regions for far, intermediate, and near vision, and also regions affected by aberrations, mainly astigmatism and defocus. Scoring techniques (Sheedy, Optom Vis Sci 2004;81:350-61) have been proposed to mark and classify PPLs according to their optical performance at each region. The objective of this study is to show that although scoring is useful to compare different lens designs, its outcome is highly dependent on the way power is defined and/or computed.
METHODS: To demonstrate this, the progressive

Spectacles are a common option for the correction of myopia in children and young adults. Visual scientists striving to explain the process of emmetropization and myopia progression have been interested in peripheral refraction, as well as on-axis performance. Using a ray tracing technique and mathematical eye models for myopia, this study assessed the effect of pantoscopic tilt on peripheral refraction in spectacle-corrected myopia. At the centre and throughout the periphery of corrected models, hyperopic shifts in the mean spherical equivalent component were found in all meridians. Horizonta

A simple method of aphakic refraction using ultrasonographic axial length measurement and keratometry was tried on 97 eyes of adult aphakic patients. The refractive errors determined by this method and by retinoscopy were compared to the subjective refraction of the same eyes. The ultrasonographically determined refractive errors were significantly nearer the subjective refraction than were the retinoscopically determined refractive errors.

A study was made of records of patients who have had at least 1 senile cataract removed and for whom refraction records were available. The risk of a cataract occurring was determined as a function of precataractous refraction. Emmetropia was found to provide a sharp borderline between the low risk (about 1:1000) of hypermetropes and an increasing risk (about 1:100) for moderate myopes for patients in their early 60s.

Astigmatism is the difference between the orthogonal principal planes of minimal and maximal powers of a toric surface, lens, or refraction. Corneal astigmatism is a common condition, and studies indicate that over 60% of individuals have more than 0.50 diopters of astigmatism. Corneal astigmatism is measured in various ways, and measurements from different devices are usually not interchangeable because of variations in technology and the corneal regions that are imaged. The integrity of the ocular surface is critically important for accurately measuring corneal astigmatism. Optimizing the oc

A microdeletion in chromosome 22q11.2 is one of the most frequent genetic syndromes. The phenotypic manifestations vary widely, which has led to its initial description as apparently different clinical entities, such as the velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) and DiGeorge syndrome. Characteristic features include cleft palate, conotruncal heart malformations, thymus hypoplasia, hypoparathyroidism, a characteristic facial phenotype and learning difficulties. Ocular abnormalities are frequently seen in this patient population. We describe the ophthalmological findings in 36 children between the age

INTRODUCTION: Multisegment (MS) spectacles are intended to slow myopia progression by modifying images falling on the peripheral retina. Some published optical treatments of these lenses assume normal incidence of light at the surfaces, but images falling on the peripheral retina are usually associated with oblique ray pencils. Here, we model representative images of point objects produced by the Hoya MiyoSmart MS spectacle lens when oblique ray pencils are used.
METHODS: Various imaging aspects of the MS lens alone and in combination with a suitable accommodating eye model for a 4D myope wer

Myopia and presbyopia are two major optometry problems facing the whole society. The mechanism of accommodation is strongly related to the treatments of myopia and presbyopia. However, the key mechanism of accommodation has puzzled us for over 400 years and is still not clear at present, leading to the stagnation of prevention and treatment of myopia and presbyopia. With the continued development of experimental technologies and equipment, the approaches to elucidate accommodation's intricacies have become more methodological and sophisticated. Fortunately, some significant progress has been m
