The plight of Ukrainian refugees staying in Sweden under EU:s mass refugee directive: a brief trauma-focused, participatory, online intervention as a pilot feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Ukrainians staying in Sweden under the EU mass refugee directive may face challenges due to traumas caused by the invasion that started on February 24, 2022. Part of an European Social Fund (ESF) project, our study showed that a brief trauma-focused group intervention onsite helped to increase health and mental-health literacy. The intervention has not yet been adapted online. METHODS: This pilot study during six months aimed to investigate the feasibility, acceptability and outcome in perceived trust, anxiety/stress, and perceived health after this brief trauma-focused group inte

Life after the pan and the fire: Depression, order, attachment, and the legacy of abuse among North Korean refugee youth and adolescent children of North Korean refugees.

Given previous research on depression, history of physical abuse, family order, attachment, and parenting, we hypothesized that the physical abuse-depression relationship would be moderated by (a) family order and (b) attachment, and that (c) attachment and family order would interact significantly in predicting depression. Hypotheses were tested in South Korea in a random cluster sample of 82 youth aged 15-25 who were either themselves North Korean refugees (n=39) or who were born to North Korean refugee mothers in China (n=43). A qualitative interview was used to shed further light on the fi…

Pathways and barriers to tuberculosis care for refugees in Taraba State, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Refugee and displaced populations experience high tuberculosis (TB) burdens and face substantial barriers to accessing diagnosis and treatment. Taraba State in north-eastern Nigeria hosts approximately 80,000 refugees, primarily from Cameroon, many living in remote areas with limited TB services. Evidence on how refugees access TB care in this setting remains limited. This study examined the pathways refugees follow from symptom onset to TB diagnosis and identified barriers to accessing and sustaining care. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted between May 2022 and Decemb…

Racialized vulnerability and socioeconomic determinants of health among Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

Afghan refugees face persistent poverty, social marginalization, and restricted access to healthcare in Pakistan, making them one of the world's largest and longest-displaced groups. Health disparities have been made worse by decades of instability, especially among marginalized groups living in informal urban settlements and refugee camps. With an emphasis on how income, education, and legal status affect health outcomes and healthcare access, this study explores the socioeconomic determinants and health burdens among Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan. Between January and June 2025, 250 Af…

Changing patterns in the medical care of refugees with HIV from Ukraine.

Since February 2022, the war in Ukraine has led to large-scale displacement, including people living with HIV (PLWH). Early reports described predominantly virologically suppressed individuals with preserved immune function. Data on refugees with HIV presenting during later phases of the war are limited. We conducted a retrospective single-center study including adult refugees with HIV from Ukraine presenting to a tertiary care center in Germany. Paticipants were grouped by time of presentation: Cohort 1 (March-December 2022) and Cohort 2 (January 2023-February 2024). Clinical, immunological, …

Why do Canadians host refugees? A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study protocol.

Refugee homestay hosting, in which private citizens or permanent residents provide temporary accommodation and informal support to refugees and displaced persons, is increasingly used as a community-based response to housing insecurity, social isolation, and settlement barriers. Although prior scholarship has examined refugee experiences within hosting arrangements, comparatively little is known about the motivations, readiness, attitudes, empathy, satisfaction, and advocacy behaviours of hosts, or about the organizational supports required to sustain hosting in Canada. The study is informed b…

Infectious disease prevalence among unaccompanied minor refugees: Associations with migration journey characteristics.

BACKGROUND: We examined infectious disease screening in unaccompanied minors because migration-related exposures may increase the risk of communicable diseases and because early detection enables timely treatment and prevention. However, the relationship between migration journey characteristics and infectious disease prevalence in this population remains poorly understood. We therefore examined infectious disease prevalence among unaccompanied minors upon arrival in Germany and explored its association with migration journey characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectio

Communication health literacy of war refugees from Ukraine in the Czech Republic.

Communicative health literacy is essential for effective interaction between patients and healthcare professionals. Its limitations may contribute to health inequalities. Ukrainian war refugees face significant barriers in accessing healthcare, primarily due to language and cultural differences. This study analyses their level of communicative health literacy and compares it with the Czech population. A quantitative study was conducted using the standardized HLS19-COM-P questionnaire. In November 2023, 1,182 Ukrainian refugees were surveyed using the CAWI method. Data analysis was performed us…

Unrecognized grief - Prevalence and comorbidity of prolonged grief among refugees in Sweden.

Refugees often experience multiple losses. Despite this, and even though the loss is often due to unnatural causes and violent killings, the presence of Prolonged Grief (PG) among refugees may be obscured by other diagnoses such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the prevalence of PG and its comorbidity with depression and PTSD among 679 adult refugees in Sweden. Results showed that 401 (59.06 %) individuals had lost someone close to them, whom they were grieving intensely. Of these, 76 individuals (18.95 % of 401) fulfilled the …

Acute Stress Disorder among 2022 Ukrainian war refugees: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Fleeing from war can be terrifying and result in Acute Stress Disorder (ASD), a mental health condition that can occur in the first month after a traumatic event. The study aimed to identify the prevalence of ASD among Ukrainian refugees and identify its risk factors to create a profile of the most vulnerable refugees. METHODS: This cross-sectional study of 637 Ukrainian war-displaced persons and refugees in 2022 used the Acute Stress Disorder Scale. RESULTS: The prevalence of ASD among participants was high (93.5%). Several factors increasing the risk of developing ASD in the …

An online tiered screening procedure to identify mental health problems among refugees.

BACKGROUND: Many refugees suffer from mental health problems due to stressful and traumatic events before, during, and after migration. However, refugees are facing a wide variety of barriers, limiting their access to mental health care. Internet-based tools, available in several languages, could be one way to increase the availability of mental health services for refugees. The present study aimed to develop and test a screening tool to screen for clinically relevant symptoms of psychiatric disorders common among refugees (i.e. Depression, Anxiety, Post-traumatic stress disorder, and Insomnia…

Imported Toxigenic Corynebacterium Diphtheriae in Refugees with Polymicrobial Skin Infections, Germany, 2022.

During August-December 2022, toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae was isolated from 25 refugees with skin infections and 2 refugees with asymptomatic throat colonization at a refugee reception center in Germany. None had systemic toxin-mediated illness. Of erosive/ulcerative skin infections, 96% were polymicrobial. Erosive/ulcerative wounds in refugees should undergo testing to rule out cutaneous diphtheria.

The association between long-distance migration and PTSD prevalence in Syrian refugees.

BACKGROUND: Refugees are forced migrants but there is a large variation in the distance that refugees cover and there is a paucity in the evidence of how this may affect refugees' health and health care needs. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association between long-distance migration and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a serious psychiatric disorder associated with deteriorating mental and somatic health. METHODS: Included from 2016-2019 were adult Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Denmark that arrived up to 12 months prior to inclusion. PTSD was assessed using the Harvard Trauma Questio…

Factors Associated with Development of Tuberculosis Disease Among Refugees, Massachusetts, 2008-2018.

Refugees and immigrants undergo tuberculosis screening prior to arrival in the United States. CDC Technical Instructions for screening changed in 2007. Our goal was to quantify TB disease in refugees after 2007 and identify risks for disease. Massachusetts refugee and tuberculosis databases were matched to identify refugees who arrived 2008-2017 and were diagnosed with tuberculosis infection or disease 2008-2018. Factors associated with disease were analyzed in SAS. Of 19,583 refugees, 4706 were diagnosed with infection at arrival and 60 with disease during the observation period. Lack of trea…

[Newly arrived refugees suffer from infectious diseases, deficiencies and poor mental health].

Refugees arrive in Denmark by different paths and canals. In some municipalities all refugees are offered a systematic health assessment when they receive a residence permit. The conducted assessments in Copenhagen and Aarhus have resulted in five studies and this review sums up some of the important results. Vitamin-D deficiencies, anaemia, latent tuberculosis, and symptoms of PTSD are just some of the most frequent conditions seen in newly arrived refugees. A health assessment upon resettlement has several important purposes and should be offered to all newly arrived refugees in Denmark.

Mental health of recently arrived male refugees in Germany reporting sexual violence.

Conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) is one of the most severe and stigmatizing human rights violations. The recognition of men and boys as targets of sexual violence is a rather recent development. In the present study data on experiences of sexual violence as well as mental health outcomes were analysed in recently arrived male refugees (N = 392) in Germany. More than one third of the men interviewed (n = 128; 36.6%) reported having experienced sexual violence. Compared to male refugees without experiences of sexual violence, male refugee survivors showed higher prevalence rates of PTSD. …
