Reinforcing and subjective effects of diazepam in nondrug-abusing volunteers.

Preference for diazepam was assessed in 18 light and 12 moderate social drinkers using a cumulative dosing procedure. The 7-session procedure consisted of: 1) four sampling sessions, during which participants ingested color-coded capsules containing either diazepam (five 4-mg capsules administered at 30-min intervals; total dose 20 mg) or placebo, and 2) three choice sessions, during which they could ingest up to 7 capsules of their preferred color of capsule, each separated by 30 min. Subjective (mood) and behavioral (performance) measures were obtained throughout the 4-hour sessions. The lig

How Does Barbe-Bleue Subjugate His Wives? Psychological and Social Coercion of Women in Interpersonal Power Contexts: A Scoping Review.

In Paul Dukas's opera, Ariane et Barbe-Bleue, when the captive wives are allowed to leave their confinement, they refuse to do so and remain with their aggressor. This narrative raises a central question: why do some women remain in violent contexts even when apparent pathways for escape exist? This scoping review aims at analysing the psychological and social mechanisms of coercion employed by those who perpetrate violence, clearly stating the focus on the responsibility of the perpetrator and exploring diverse relationship settings. A total of 31 articles from diverse disciplines such as soc

Not supposed to feel this: traditional masculinity in psychotherapy with male veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Traditional masculine socialization presents challenges in psychotherapy, for example, by decreasing the likelihood of help-seeking and by making emotion-laden content more difficult to address. While this has been established in civilian populations, more intense forms of masculine socialization found in military settings may amplify such issues in male veteran populations. Male veterans returning from and Afghanistan (OEF) and Iraq (OIF) exhibit strong traditional masculine socialization and generally present in a unique manner. It is posited that OEF/OIF male veterans' unique presentation i

Social network tie functions of social support and social influence and adult smoking abstinence.

Adults' social network ties serve multiple functions and play prominently in quitting smoking. We examined three types of adults' egocentric social networks, including family, friends, and friends online to investigate how two network characteristics with major relevance to health behavior, network size and tie closeness, related to the emotional and confidant support and to pro- and anti-smoking social influence these ties may transmit. We also examine whether the social support and social influence constructs related to smoking abstinence. We utilized baseline and 7-day abstinence survey dat

Multi-sensory rooms: comparing effects of the Snoezelen and the Stimulus Preference environment on the behavior of adults with profound mental retardation.

The present study examined whether Snoezelen and Stimulus Preference environments have differential effects on disruptive and pro-social behaviors in adults with profound mental retardation and autism. In N=27 adults these target behaviors were recorded for a total of 20 sessions using both multi-sensory rooms. Three comparison groups were created by diagnosis and motor respective linguistic abilities. Each client was exposed to only one multi-sensory room. Results showed that Snoezelen intervention decreased disruptive behaviors only in individuals with autism, while Stimulus Preference incre

Beyond the Textbook: An HBM and SCT Analysis of Adolescent Reproductive Health Education in Rural Bangladesh.

The effective delivery of adolescent and reproductive health (ARH) education in rural Bangladeshi schools is influenced by factors extending beyond curriculum content, including teacher preparedness, classroom interactions, gender norms, and the broader social environment. This qualitative study examined how teachers and students experienced the delivery and discussion of ARH topics in rural secondary schools, drawing on the Health Belief Model (HBM) and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) as interpretive frameworks. Data were collected through 18 in-depth interviews with teachers and nine focus gro

PEP reward reactivity moderates the effects of RSA reactivity on antisocial behavior and substance use.

Integrating Polyvagal Theory and Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST), we examined pre-ejection period (PEP) reward reactivity, which was suggested to index trait impulsivity, as a moderator between respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reactivity and antisocial behavior (ASB), and substance use in an urban male, adult sample. To understand the inconsistent findings between RSA reactivity and externalizing problems, we proposed to study both negatively and positively valenced tasks for RSA reactivity and to include PEP reward reactivity as a moderator for the RSA-behavior link. Data were collec

Imitation: definitions, evidence, and mechanisms.

Imitation can be defined as the copying of behavior. To a biologist, interest in imitation is focused on its adaptive value for the survival of the organism, but to a psychologist, the mechanisms responsible for imitation are the most interesting. For psychologists, the most important cases of imitation are those that involve demonstrated behavior that the imitator cannot see when it performs the behavior (e.g., scratching one's head). Such examples of imitation are sometimes referred to as opaque imitation because they are difficult to account for without positing cognitive mechanisms, such a

[Surgical treatment of expiratory stenosis].

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the effectiveness of surgical treatment for complicated expiratory tracheal stenosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors present anamnestic data, symptoms, diagnostic approaches, surgical features and outcomes in a patient with expiratory tracheal stenosis and syncopal episodes. CONCLUSION: Expiratory tracheal stenosis remains an underdiagnosed and underestimated condition. Primary etiopathogenetic factor is excessive intrathoracic pressure during exhalation. The gold standard for diagnosis is tracheobronchoscopy. Imaging techniques are useful only in dynamic formats

Learned helplessness and its relevance for psychological suffering: a new perspective illustrated with attachment problems, burn-out, and fatigue complaints.

We develop a new perspective on various forms of psychological suffering - including attachment issues, burn-out, and fatigue complaints - by drawing on the construct of learned helplessness. We conceptualise learned helplessness in operant terms as the behavioural effects of a lack of reinforcement and in goal-directed terms as the dysregulation of goal-directed behaviour. Our central claim is that if one fails to reach a goal (e.g. the goal to secure a job), then not only this goal but also other related goals (e.g. the goal to maintain social relationships) may lose their motivating effects

Computational models of behavioral addictions: State of the art and future directions.

Non-pharmacological behavioral addictions, such as pathological gambling, videogaming, social networking, or internet use, are becoming major public health concerns. It is not yet clear how behavioral addictions could share many major neurobiological and behavioral characteristics with substance use disorders, despite the absence of direct pharmacological influences. A deeper understanding of the neurocognitive mechanisms of addictive behavior is needed, and computational modeling could be one promising approach to explain intricately entwined cognitive and neural dynamics. This review describ

Dummheit.

Immunizing against influenza is tricky; against measles is not. Influenza comes in many constantly evolving strains, but one measles shot in childhood confers lifelong immunity. Unlike the flu, measles was wiped out. Its return represents an outbreak not of disease, but of stupidity. The matrix of stupidity is, however, reinforced by strong strands of malice, as when Andrew Wakefield's fraudulent 1998 paper linked the MMR vaccine to autism. The fraud was unmasked and the vaccine-autism link disproven, but the evil influence continues. Measles offers an illustration of Virchow's insights that m

Why women choose trial of labor or repeat cesarean section.

Despite growing interest in vaginal birth after previous delivery by cesarean section, virtually no studies have examined patient decision making in any depth. This paper examines the social content and cognitive structure of pregnant women's decisions to attempt delivery by trial of labor or for elective repeat cesarean section. Three features of childbirth care strategies are discussed. First, social goals are as central to women's decisions as are medical risks. Second, women reinforce their decisions by defining multiple benefits for the preferred alternative and multiple hazards for the r

Parent-to-child aggression, intimate partner aggression, conflict resolution, and children's social-emotional competence in early childhood.

Early childhood is critical to the development of children's social-emotional competence, which predicts peer relations and school adjustment in later periods of childhood. The effects of experiencing or witnessing aggression on children's social-emotional development are well known, yet the role of conflict resolution within the family has not been sufficiently studied. Social information processing models suggests that children who experience positive forms of conflict resolution within the family are likely to generalize these experiences and related skills outside the family, and thus deve

How do social norms influence sexual and gender-based violence and access to care and support services among youth? A qualitative study in Busia and Mbale districts, Eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Harmful social norms underpin much of the sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) experienced globally, influencing both its perpetration and survivors’ access to care. In Uganda, these norms rooted in gender inequality, male authority and survivor stigma remain pervasive, particularly in rural districts with limited youth-friendly services. Few studies have explored how such norms shape help-seeking behaviour among young survivors. This study examined the social norms surrounding SGBV and their impact on access to care and support in Busia and Mbale districts. METHODS: This quali

A component analysis of "stereotypy as reinforcement" for alternative behavior.

Results from several studies have suggested that the opportunity to engage in stereotypic behavior may function as reinforcement for alternative, more socially desirable behaviors. However, the procedural components of this intervention include several distinct operations whose effects have not been analyzed separately. While measuring the occurrence of stereotypy and an alternative behavior (manipulation of leisure materials), we exposed 3 participants to three or four components of a "stereotypy as reinforcement" contingency: (a) continuous access to materials, (b) prompts to manipulate mate

Linkages between functional independence, depressive symptoms, and social networks in aging populations: a systematic review.

Activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL), main indicators of functional independence in older adults, are closely associated with depression and social networks and represent a critical determinant of well-being. Despite the growing body of research, both original and review articles to date have been limited in their ability to provide a comprehensive and coherent explanation of the interrelationships among these three domains, largely due to methodological constraints. Accordingly, this study systematically reviewed a wide range of publications addressing functional abili

Effects of alcohol on the processing of social threat-related stimuli in socially phobic women.

BACKGROUND: Social phobics are at a higher risk of developing alcohol problems. The mechanism promoting this association is not clear. According to Sayette (1993b), alcohol attenuates anxiety responses by disrupting initial appraisal of threatening stimuli. We used the emotional Stroop test and an implicit memory test to investigate whether alcohol hinders appraisal of social threat words in patients diagnosed with social phobia. PROCEDURE: Thirty-two women with social phobia (DSM-IV) and 32 female controls performed an emotional Stroop test either after drinking alcohol resulting in a blood

The influence of loneliness & social isolation on cardiovascular risk factors: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Despite substantial advances in treatment and preventive medicine, heart disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While traditional risk factors have been identified, emerging research continues to underscore the importance of social interactions. AREAS COVERED: This review examines research on how loneliness and social isolation influence the major risk factors for heart disease. Studies from 2000 up to April 2026 were searched using PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science. The included research focused on loneliness and social isolation, along

Involvement of cAMP-Dependent Protein Kinase in the Nucleus Accumbens in Cocaine Versus Social Interaction Reward.

Evidence suggests that PKA activity in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays an essential role in reward-related learning. In this study, we investigated whether PKA is differentially involved in the expression of learning produced by either natural reinforcers or psychostimulants. For that purpose, we inhibited PKA through a bilateral infusion of Rp-cAMPS, a specific PKA inhibitor, directly into the NAc. The effects of PKA inhibition in the NAc on the expression of concurrent conditioned place preference (CPP) for cocaine (drug) and social interaction (natural reward) in rats were evaluated. We f
