The alkylresorcinol (AR) content and relative homologue composition were determined in 9 Latvian and 11 Finnish soft breads. ARs were extracted with hot 1-propanol and quantified, using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. The total AR content (μg/g dry matter) varied from 560 to 840 in rye breads, from 500 to 700 in Finnish mixed rye and wheat flour breads, from 200 to 300 in Latvian mixed rye and wheat flour breads and from 25 to 30 in white wheat breads. BACKGROUND: Alkylresorcinols (AR) are amphiphilic phenolic compounds found in high amounts in wheat, durum wheat and rye, with different homologue composition for each cereal. The effect of different amounts of added AR from these cereals on bread volume, height, porosity and microstructure was studied. Alkylresorcinols (ARs) are phenolic lipids that are present in high amounts in the bran layer of different cereals. Rye samples, cultivar Hazlet, and a white rye genotype, RT202, were analyzed for their antioxidant properties and AR content and composition, based on six fractions of the bran, where 1 was the outermost fraction and 6 was the bran fraction closest to the endosperm. Dermal chemical peeling is a very satisfying procedure for patients and physicians alike. Although not providing the ablation of deep wrinkles and scars that dermabrasion and laser procedures may accomplish, trichloroacetic acid peels usually result in few complications and rapid recovery. Patients can usually expect photographic improvement in their skin. The results are usually long lasting, and most patients do not need to repeat dermal peels for at least 2 years. Of all resurfacing procedures, dermal peeling provides the best benefit-to-risk ratio.

A new enzyme, geranylpyrophosphate:olivetolate geranyltransferase (GOT), the first enzyme in the biosynthesis of cannabinoids could be detected in extracts of young leaves of Cannabis sativa. The enzyme accepts geranylpyrophosphate (GPP) and to a lesser degree also nerylpyrophosphate (NPP) as a cosubstrate. It is, however, specific for olivetolic acid; its decarboxylation product olivetol is inactive as a prenyl acceptor.

Eight known antipsoriatic drugs of diverse structures were tested on the basis of their structural similarity with arachidonic acid and known inhibitors of lipoxygenase. A correlation was observed between their antipsoriatic activity and lipoxygenase inhibition suggesting that a common underlying mechanism of action might be involved.

The object of the study was to clarify whether rumination has a bearing on the decomposition of zearalenone in the metabolism of the toxin or not. The experiment was performed using rumen fluid in vitro. Rumen fluid samples containing various amounts of zearalenone were incubated in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at 38 degrees C for two days. The zearalenone content was determined by liquid chromatography after 0, 4, 24 and 48 hours incubation periods.
