Past-Year Abuse and Eating Disorder Symptoms Among U.S. College Students.

Evidence consistently indicates associations between eating disorders (EDs) and childhood emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, but the relationship between EDs and abuse occurring later in development has largely been unexplored. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine associations between past-year abuse and ED symptoms among college students. Participants represented 12 U.S. colleges and universities participating in the Healthy Bodies Study (HBS) between 2013 and 2015 (N = 10,204; Mage = 23.38 years). Students self-reported experiences of emotional, physical, and sexual abus

Interventions to prevent and reduce coercive measures in psychiatric and residential care for youth: a mixed-methods systematic review.

Coercive measures (eg, restraint and seclusion) remain common in child and adolescent psychiatric and residential care despite efforts to reduce their use. We conducted a mixed-methods systematic review of interventions to reduce coercive measure use. Eligible studies were published between Jan 1, 2005, and Feb 19, 2025; examined interventions in psychiatric, residential, or juvenile justice settings for people younger than 25 years; and reported quantitative outcomes, qualitative experiences, or both. 26 studies (13 quantitative and 13 qualitative) with low-to-moderate risk of bias were inclu

Puncture versus capture: which stresses animals the most?

The prerogative of animal welfare science includes wild species and ecological studies. Yet, guidance enshrined in legislation is narrowly derived from studies involving laboratory rodents; legitimacy for non-mammalian free-ranging species is thus debatable. The European directive 2010/63/EU illustrates this problem. It includes this key statement: "Practices not likely to cause pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm equivalent to, or higher than, that caused by the introduction of a needle…" which determines if the directive shall apply. Protocols involving surgery clearly fall within the

Emerging technologies for the prevention and management of diabetic foot ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are one of the most serious complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). Although research has improved understanding of DFU etiology, an effective clinical prevention and management of DFUs remains undetermined. Knowledge of recent technologies may enable clinicians and researchers to provide appropriate interventions to prevent and treat DFUs. This paper discusses how diabetes causes peripheral neuropathy and peripheral arterial diseases, which contribute to increased risk of DFUs. Then, emerging technologies that could be used to quantify risks of DFUs are discussed,

Effect of handling on neurotransmitter profile in pig brain according to fear related behaviour.

Chemical neurotransmitters (NT) are principal actors in all neuronal networks of animals. The central nervous system plays an important role in stress susceptibility and organizes the response to a stressful situation through the interaction of the dopaminergic and the serotonergic pathways, leading to the activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). This study was designed to investigate: a) the effects of stressful handling of pigs at the slaughterhouse on the neurotransmitter profile in four brain areas: amygdala, prefrontal cortex (PFC), hippocampus and hypothalamus, and b)

An overhung mute suspect died during restraint - Is this a case of positional asphyxia?

Positional asphyxia is a specific type of suffocation that results from the body being forced and fixed in a particular position causing death by suffocation. The body exhibits obvious general characteristics of death by suffocation. We report a case of custody death that may have been caused by positional asphyxia. The mute criminal suspect died in a detention room after arrest. The suspect was found unconscious and died following placement in a hanging position for 8 h. We reviewed the case with respect to the autopsy findings, pathological changes, and specific scene where the death occurre

A jugular bleeding technique in rabbits.

When studying pharmacokinetics in rabbits, researchers must often take multiple blood samples from conscious rabbits. Researchers usually collect these samples via the auricular vein, typically through a port or an indwelling catheter. The authors have developed an easy and efficient alternative method for obtaining multiple blood samples from conscious rabbits via the external jugular vein. This jugular bleeding technique serves as a refinement to blood sampling methods that require rabbits to undergo surgery (e.g., to insert a port) because it requires no alleviation of pain. During a 2-year

Biomechanical response of the pediatric abdomen, Part 2: injuries and their correlation with engineering parameters.

This paper describes the injuries generated during dynamic belt loading to a porcine model of the 6-year-old human abdomen, and correlates injury outcomes with measurable parameters. The test fixture produced transverse, dynamic belt loading on the abdomen of 47 immediately post-mortem juvenile swine at two locations (upper/lower), with penetration magnitudes ranging from 23% - 65% of the undeformed abdominal depth, with and without muscle tensing, and over a belt penetration rate range of 2.9 m/s - 7.8 m/s. All thoracoabdominal injuries were documented in detail and then coded according to th

Remobilization partially restored the bone mass in a non-growing cancellous bone site following long term immobilization.

There is no report in the rat of the effects of remobilization (RM) in an adult bone site. The aim of this study was to determine whether complete recovery from IM-induced bone loss will occur in a non-growing bone site, the distal tibia. Seventy-five 6-month-old virgin Sprague-Dawley female rats were used in this study. Their hindlimbs were immobilized against the abdomen with bandages for 18 weeks, then remobilized for 2, 10 or 20 weeks. Distal tibial sections were analyzed in the former epiphysis, 0.3 mm proximal from the calcified cartilage, and in trabecular bone of the former metaphysis

Effect of pyridoxine and magnesium on stress-induced gastric ulcers in mice selected for low or high blood magnesium levels.

Gastric ulcers were induced by immobilization in adult female mice with genetically low (MGL) or high (MGH) blood magnesium levels, obtained by selective breeding at the CSAL-CNRS (Orléans, France). All animals, fed with the same standard diet rich in magnesium, were divided into four groups of 20 animals and injected subcutaneously every 2 days for 10 days with isotonic saline (group 1), pyridoxine chlorhydrate 1.11 mg/kg in saline (group 2), magnesium lactate 149 mg/kg in saline (group 3) or both pyridoxine and magnesium (group 4). Subsequently, animals were submitted to a complete fast and

Behavior management of aggressive sequela after Reye's syndrome.

This study describes the use of behavior management procedures to reduce the occurrence of severe behavioral sequela in a 14-year-old, post-Reye's syndrome male. Prior to intervention the client exhibited severe self-injurious, hyperaggressive, and food refusal behaviors that precluded any opportunities for rehabilitation, placed him at severe medical risk, and made him a candidate for institutional placement. With contingent restraint, in vivo desensitization, and reinforcement contingencies it was possible to control these behaviors and begin intensive rehabilitation. Subsequently, the clien

Electroencephalographic patterns of clinically normal, sedated, and tranquilized newborn foals and adult horses.

To establish a clinically practical procedure for recording the equine EEG, 25 healthy adult horses and 6 newborn foals were used. Recordings were taken with the animals alert and tranquilized, confined in metal stocks, or physically restrained. The dominant alert waveforms of adult horses were fast activity (25 to 40 Hz) with medium-to-low voltages (5 to 40 microV-dominant 10 to 15 microV). Underlying this fast activity was slower (0.5 to 4.0 Hz) activity with medium-to-low voltages (10 to 40 microV). Twelve of the 25 adult horses had EEG frequencies in the alpha frequency range (10 to 15 Hz,

[Structural characteristics of the thyroid and parathyroid C cells of monkeys during head-down tilt hypokinesia].

Eight monkeys Macaca rhesus were exposed to head-down tilt for 7 days and to clinostatic hypokinesia for 7 days with subsequent 12-day head-down tilt. C cells of the thyroid gland and the parathyroid glands of 5 control and 8 experimental monkeys were investigated histologically, morphometrically and electron-microscopically. On the 7th tilt day the C cell population increased, their nuclei grew significantly, synthesis activated, and secretory granules accumulated. By day 19 most C cells were in the secretion stage. Morphological signs of an increased functional activity of the thyroid gland

Influence of opioids on central thermoregulatory mechanisms.

Of the effects of morphine and endogenous opioid peptides on thermoregulation, the one which is most likely to be of physiologic significance is hyperthermia. This increase in body temperature is the result of coordinated changes in both physiological and behavioral thermoregulatory activities and, like fever, reflects an increase in the level about which body temperature is regulated. Morphine, endogenous opioid peptides and other opioids such as pentazocine all cause hyperthermia, but the considerable variation in the dose of naloxone required to antagonize the different agonists indicates t

[Positional asphyxia, a cause of death insufficiently known].

Positional asphyxia (AP) is a fatal condition arising because of the adoption of particular body positions, causing mechanical interference. Consequences are important alveolar hypoventilation and cardiac hyperexcitability due to respiratory acidosis in combination with extensive liberation of catecholamine occurring in attracted individuals sustaining physical restrain. This syndrome can occur in various circumstances and is mostly observed in situations with physical restraint and in combination with excited delirium (ED). The diagnosis is essentially based on three criteria: body position o

Quantifying infants' everyday restrained experiences in the home using wearable inertial sensors.

Physical restraint-including being held, carried, and restrained in devices-is a common feature of infants' everyday lives. However, previous survey-based and video-based methods cannot simultaneously provide continuous, full-day accounts of infants' restrained experiences. This study developed and validated a machine learning model to quantify infants' restrained time moment-to-moment across the full day in the home environment using wearable sensor data. We used a dataset that includes 146 home-visit sessions from 66 infants, with 30 younger infants aged 4-7 months, and 36 older infants aged

NO SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE PLASMA CORTICOSTERONE RESPONSE OF HISPANIOLAN AMAZON PARROTS (AMAZONA VENTRALIS) SEDATED WITH INTRANASAL MIDAZOLAM-BUTORPHANOL DURING PERIODS OF ROUTINE RESTRAINT.

A previous study found that restraint significantly increased plasma corticosterone in Hispaniolan Amazon parrots (Amazona ventralis). This noncrossover study's objective was to test the effects of the sedatives midazolam and butorphanol on the plasma corticosterone response in Hispaniolan Amazon parrots during a 30-min period of restraint. The prediction was that sedated parrots would have significantly decreased plasma corticosterone responses compared with controls when restrained. The parrot colony contained 10 male and 12 female Hispaniolan Amazon parrots (15-26 yr of age; weight range, 2

A Bitter Pill: The Ethics of Involuntary Treatment of Adolescents With Severe Eating Disorders.

Severe eating disorders (EDs) are a common and increasing threat to normal adolescent health and development. Major clinical challenges include longstanding malnutrition potentially complicated by emergent electrolyte disorders and cardiac dysfunction. The care of adolescents with severe EDs can lead to challenging decisions regarding the initiation of involuntary feeding with restraints. After describing a representative case, we present pertinent ethical challenges involved in the use of involuntary feeding with restraints in adolescents with severe EDs. These include the following: (1) the
