Neural injury by frontal approach of external ventricular drainage in stroke patients.

OBJECTIVES: No study on the characteristics of injury of neural tracts following external ventricular drainage (EVD) in a large number of consecutive patients following EVD has been reported. In this study, using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT), we attempted to investigate the characteristics of injury of neural tracts associated with EVD using a frontal approach in stroke patients. METHODS: We recruited 43 consecutive hemorrhagic stroke patients with a history of EVD using a frontal approach. Five neural tracts were reconstructed [corticospinal-tract (CST), corticoreticular-pathway (CRP)

The tachykinin NK1 receptor antagonist GR205171 abolishes the retching activity of neurons comprising the central pattern generator for vomiting in dogs.

Tachykinin NK1 receptor antagonists are known to act centrally and to have broad-spectrum antiemetic effects, but their precise site of action has not yet been defined. To identify this site, the effects of the NK1 receptor antagonist GR205171 on the activities of neurons comprising the central pattern generator (CPG) for vomiting were observed in decerebrate paralyzed dogs. A non-respiratory neuron in each of nine dogs was considered to be a CPG neuron based on its response to abdominal vagal stimulation, its location in the CPG area in the reticular formation dorsomedial to the retrofacial n…

5-HT innervation of reticulospinal neurons and other brainstem structures in lamprey.

In order to determine if reticulospinal neurons involved in the control of locomotion and responsive to exogenously applied 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) are innervated by fibers that contain serotonin, the serotoninergic innervation of reticulospinal neurons, identified by retrograde labeling with fluorescein-conjugated dextran-amine (FDA), was investigated by immunohistochemistry in the lamprey brainstem. A widespread distribution of 5-HT immunoreactive (5-HT-ir) fibers was seen within the basal plate of the brainstem, an area containing reticulospinal somata and dendritic aborizations. Numerou

[Status of muscle tone in rheumatoid arthritis patients].

Muscle tonus in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was collated with the activity of the pathological process and functional articular insufficiency (FAI) in different variants of polyneuropathy (P). Hetero- or unidirectional hypotension of muscles was the most characteristic sign in RA. In cases of the sensory variant of P, patients with an early period of the disease and 1-0 degree FAI showed severe damage to the central motor neuron, linked with a dissociated type of muscular dystonia (predominantly hypotension of the flexory group of legs) and a peculiar dystonic phenomenon (a vestibu

[Electrographic reflection of vegetative protective and compensatory reactions in craniocerebral trauma].

The authors substantiate the assumption that the presence of high-amplitude superslow potential fluctuations in registration from the skin surface of the head is determined by destabilization of subcortical intercentral relationships which comprises inhibition of stem and activation of posterohypothalamic structures in craniocerebral trauma. The constant potential reacts only to the sharpest period of a severe craniocerebral trauma and reflects acute inflammatory and vascular phenomena on the cortical level in the first 24 hours; maintenance or appearance of increased positive values of the co

Identification of ultrasonic vocalization substrates determined by electrical stimulation applied to the medulla oblongata in the rat.

The aim of the present investigation was to identify the neural structures, within the rat medulla, that are responsible for rodent ultrasound production. Sound producing substrates were found to be located in the reticular formation and some cranial nerve nuclei as well as several other nuclei situated in the lateral and dorsomedial portions of the medulla. To estimate the degree of involvement in the generation of ultrasound signals, the sound response latencies were measured for each structure. The lateral reticular nucleus and the facial nucleus showed latencies that were significantly sho…

[Effect of dibazol on cerebral blood supply and EEG in experimental intracerebral hemorrhage].

A hemorrhage into the right internal capsule in vigilant cats is accompanied by a drop of focal cerebral blood flow in the sensomotor cortex, in the thalamus and reticular formation of the middle brain of both hemispheres, an appearance of slow-wave high amplitude in the EEG activity and in some cases of convulsive discharges. Such changes of the blood flow and bioelectrical activity are preserved in survived cats after 24 hours following hemorrhage. An intracarotid singular injection (Img/kg) and especially a 30 minute infusion of 0.5% solution of dibasol brings about in most of the cases an …

Reflex blepharospasm associated with bilateral basal ganglia lesion.

A patient with a bilateral striatal lesion secondary to anoxia presented reflex blepharospasm associated with parkinsonism and dystonia in the limbs. The blink reflex excitability curve was enhanced and the R-2 response prolonged as in patients with essential blepharospasm. The findings in this patient support the notion that blepharospasm may be secondary to basal ganglia dysfunction through abnormal facilitation of reticular formation neurons controlling facial nucleus motoneuron excitability.

Pigmentatio reticularis faciei et colli with multiple epithelial cysts.

Brown-black reticular pigmentation developed on the face and neck of a man. This was associated with severe seborrhea and the formation of multiple epithelial cysts on the trunk. We propose the term pigmentatio reticularis faciei et colli with multiple epithelial cysts as a suitable title for this disorder, and we hypothesize that these skin changes in this disorder are of nevoid origin. One similar case has been reported as "lentiginosis senilis" in the Japanese literature.

The cerebellum engages multiple pre-motor pathways through a divergent-convergent architecture to shape whisker dynamics.

The cerebellar output can trigger whisker movement through indirect projections that pass via several brainstem pre-motor nuclei before reaching the facial nucleus, which directly controls whisker movements in rodents. Although the central pattern generator function of the intermediate reticular formation has been recently clarified, the roles of the other whisker pre-motor nuclei remain unclear. Here, we set out to compare the whisker movement kinematics of the main pre-motor whisker nuclei connecting the cerebellum and the facial nucleus. We optogenetically stimulated neurons located in the …

A medullary centre for lapping in mice.

It has long been known that orofacial movements for feeding can be triggered, coordinated, and often rhythmically organized at the level of the brainstem, without input from higher centers. We uncover two nuclei that can organize the movements for ingesting fluids in mice. These neuronal groups, IRtPhox2b and Peri5Atoh1, are marked by expression of the pan-autonomic homeobox gene Phox2b and are located, respectively, in the intermediate reticular formation of the medulla and around the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve. They are premotor to all jaw-opening and tongue muscles. Stimulation o…

Unit activity in nucleus paragigantocellularis lateralis during cerebral ischemia in the rat.

In urethane-anesthetized, paralyzed and respirated rats with both vertebral arteries ligated between atlas and axis, bilateral occlusion of the common carotids produces a 19-85 mm Hg rise in mean arterial pressure. This pressor response is entirely mediated by the activation of the sympathetic system, is unaffected by brainstem transection at midpontine levels and is completely eliminated by bilateral lesions of the anterior ventrolateral medulla (including nucleus paragigantocellularis lateralis or PGCL). The magnitude of the response is unaltered following the bilateral section of the 9th-12

The distribution of the cat's carotid sinus nerve afferent and efferent cell bodies using the horseradish peroxidase technique.

The location of both afferent and efferent carotid sinus nerve (CSN) cell bodies in the cat has been determined using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. Following a limited exposure of the central cut end of the CSN to HRP, labeled sensory ganglion cells were found in both the petrosal and superior ganglia of the IXth cranial nerve. An average of 387 in the former and 16 cells in the latter ganglion were labeled. Retrogradely labeled neurons were found only within the ipsilateral medulla. These cells were both round and spindle shaped and had an average somal diameter of 19 micrometer

Caudate stimulation and substantia nigra activity in the rat.

1. The responses of spontaneously active single neurones in the substantia nigra and overlying mesencephalic reticular formation have been analysed during the electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral caudate nucleus. Experiments were performed in rats anaesthetized with urethane or pentobarbitone. All recordings were made extracellularly with multi-barrelled glass micropipettes which were also used to test neuronal responsiveness to electrophoretically administered substances. The micropipette tip position was marked and the distribution of neurones studied has been analysed. 2. Single shock …
