Although cats and their arthropod parasites can sometimes be important sources of zoonotic diseases in humans, the extent of exposure among various cat populations to many potential zoonotic agents remains incompletely described. In this study, 170 domestic cats living in private homes, feral cat colonies, and animal shelters from California and Wisconsin were evaluated by serology to determine the levels of exposure to a group of zoonotic vector-borne pathogens. Serological positive test results were observed in 17.2% of cats for Rickettsia rickettsii, 14.9% for R akari, 4.9% for R typhi, 11.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia species are obligate intracellular Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria and the etiologic agents of diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), Mediterranean spotted fever, epidemic typhus, and murine typhus. Genome sequencing revealed that R. prowazekii has ~25 % non-coding DNA, the majority of which is thought to be either "junk DNA" or pseudogenes resulting from genomic reduction. These characteristics also define other Rickettsia genomes. Bacterial small RNAs, whose biogenesis is predominantly attributed to either the intergenic regions (trans-acting) or to th

The purpose of our study was to analyze the use of febrile agglutinin (FA) serologic tests in the diagnosis of Salmonella (typhi and paratyphi), Rickettsia, Brucella, and Francisella infections. Data were collected in a retrospective chart study of 202 titer requests covering a 42-month period at our teaching hospital. We found that no diagnoses were made by utilizing complete six-antigen FA panels. Three cases of infection were diagnosed serologically, all three with more discriminately selected single-antigen titers. These three cases each had a positive epidemiological history suggestive of

BACKGROUND: Common causes of acute febrile illness in tropical countries have similar symptoms, which often mimic those of dengue. Accurate clinical diagnosis can be difficult without laboratory confirmation and disease burden is generally under-reported. Accurate, population-based, laboratory-confirmed incidence data on dengue and other causes of acute fever in dengue-endemic Asian countries are needed.
METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This prospective, multicenter, active fever surveillance, cohort study was conducted in selected centers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Viet

Quantitative studies of selected features of peripherally induced Rickettsia mooseri (= R. typhi) infection in Rattus norvegicus-derived white laboratory rats revealed a unique association between microbe and amplifying vertebrate host which appears to be especially conducive to maintenance of the enzootic cycle. Both adult and newborn (1-3 days old) rats were highly susceptible to percutaneous infection (ID50 = approximately 1 organism), but neither showed signs of disease or died even when inoculated with 10(4)-10(5) plaque-forming units. Gain in body weight of infected newborn rats was indi

BACKGROUND: There are few studies about the presence of murine typhus in Greece. Our objective was to conduct a large scale retrospective investigation to determine the clinical and epidemiological features of patients diagnosed with murine typhus in Greece.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: From 2012 to 2019 serum samples from hospitalized patients and outpatients throughout Greece suspected for murine typhus infection were tested by immunofluorescence assay for Rickettsia typhi. Immunofluorescence positive samples obtained since 2016 were also tested by qPCR targeting R. typhi. Clinical and e…

Scrub typhus (caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi) and murine typhus (caused by Rickettsia typhi) cause up to 28% of febrile episodes in Thailand and Laos. The current understanding of coagulation and inflammation in the pathogenesis of these clinically very similar vasculotropic diseases is limited. This study compared human in vivo changes in 15 coagulation, inflammation and endothelial activation markers in prospectively collected admission and follow-up samples of 121 patients (55 scrub typhus, 55 murine typhus, and 11 typhus-like illness) and 51 healthy controls from Laos. As compared with c…

INTRODUCTION: New species of Borrelia, Rickettsia, and Anaplasma have recently been detected in ticks in French Guiana. Additionally, a new species of Anaplasma was discovered in a human. Specific genovariants of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia have also been identified in the Amazonian forest of French Guiana, indicating a specific sylvatic cycle.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a patient who experienced fever, myalgia, rash, and inoculation eschars following dozens of tick bites while hiking in the Amazon rainforest. Laboratory results showed lymphopenia, neutrophilia, hepatic cytolysis a

Fever is a widely recognised presenting symptom of COVID-19. Consequently, other febrile illnesses may be difficult to distinguish from COVID-19-leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. One such illness is murine typhus, a fleaborne illness with worldwide distribution caused by Rickettsia typhi It often presents with fever, headache and myalgia, all of which have been commonly reported with COVID-19. Although the disease is usually mild with a good prognosis, there have been reports of severe illness and death. I present a case of murine typhus in a young male who had 2 weeks of headaches…

Rickettsioses are severe infections caused by obligately intracellular bacteria that preferentially infect the endothelium lining the vasculature. The causative agents, rickettsiae, have been divided according to biological, genetic, and antigenic parameters into 2 main groups: spotted fever and typhus. They have not been thought to stimulate cross-reactive protective immune responses; however, in this study, we show that, in relevant animal models that mimic human rickettsial infections, there is reciprocal immunological cross-protection between spotted fever group and typhus group rickettsia

We report a severe case of typhus group rickettsiosis in a returning traveler from Indonesia. This typically mild illness was characterized by progressive pulmonary edema and prolonged fever, with defervescence 4 days after the commencement of doxycycline.

We report the first three documented cases of murine typhus imported into Europe from Indonesia, discuss clues for the diagnosis of the disease, and urge that murine fever be considered in the diagnosis of febrile disease in travelers.

Urban Norway and black rats (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus) are the source of a number of pathogens responsible for significant human morbidity and mortality in cities around the world. These pathogens include zoonotic bacteria (Leptospira interrogans, Yersina pestis, Rickettsia typhi, Bartonella spp., Streptobacillus moniliformis), viruses (Seoul hantavirus), and parasites (Angiostrongylus cantonensis). A more complete understanding of the ecology of these pathogens in people and rats is critical for determining the public health risks associated with urban rats and for developing strat…
