Effect of temperature on the survival of Alaria alata mesocercariae.

Recent findings of Alaria alata mesocercariae in wild boars and other animals in Europe reinforced the concern about the public health risk posed by this parasite especially if the game meat is insufficiently heated during preparation. Cooking and freezing are effective methods for the inactivation of parasites in meat whereas refrigeration is considered as an essential part of the Good Hygiene Practice. Additionally, microwave dielectric heating may represent an equally effective tool for parasite inactivation. Therefore, isolated vital mesocercariae were examined with respect to their resili

Relationship between the tooth eruption and regional blood flow in angiotensin II-induced hypertensive rats.

OBJECTIVE: The mechanism of action of vasoactive drugs on tooth movement is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to measure simultaneously the axial movement of the mandibular incisor, regional blood flow at the base of the incisor, and systemic arterial blood pressure in angiotensin II-induced hypertensive rats to determine the possible cause of tooth displacement. DESIGN: The measurements were made under artificial respiration with halothane anaesthesia. In the experimental animals, 2.5 microg of angiotensin II in 1 ml of Ringer's solution was infused at 0.83 ml/h for 12 h from the

Rapid body cooling by cold fluid infusion prolongs survival time during uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock in pigs.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine whether cold fluid infusion could rapidly decrease the core temperature and prolong survival during uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock in pigs. METHODS: Fourteen pigs under light halothane anesthesia and spontaneous breathing underwent initial blood withdrawal of 25 mL/kg over 15 minutes, followed by uncontrolled hemorrhage (5-mm aortotomy). Immediately after the aortotomy, the pigs were randomized to receive 500 mL lactated Ringer's solution at either 4 degrees C (group 1, n = 7) or 37 degrees C (group 2, n = 7) over 20 minutes through the inte

Calcium antagonism of an opiate drug effect on an excitable cell membrane.

When frog sartorius muscles are exposed to methadone (2-4 X 10(-4) M) the action potential recorded intracellularly is depressed and eliminated in 3 to 4 hr. This is due to a decrease in the sodium conductance as measured by the maximum rate of rise of the action potential. When the calcium concentration in frog Ringer's solution (normally 1.08 mM) was either lowered to 0.54 mM or raised to 2 mM, the effect of methadone on excitability was unchanged. However, increasing the extracellular calcium to 4 mM decreased the action of methadone. As this would also increase the intracellular calcium co

Resuscitation in uncontrolled hemorrhage.

Fluid resuscitation is considered to be an integral component of the management of hemorrhagic shock. Numerous experimental studies of hypovolemic shock have confirmed the value of volume infusions, but in these models the rate, volume, and duration of bleeding are carefully controlled. The results of such studies may not be applicable to clinical hemorrhage, in which bleeding continues unabated. Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 250 to 390 g were anesthetized, and a femoral artery and vein were cannulated for constant blood pressure monitoring and fluid infusion. Through a midline abdominal i

Effect of 4DryField® PH, a Novel Adhesion Barrier, on Recurrence of Intestinal Adhesions after Extensive Visceral Adhesiolysis.

BACKGROUND: Adhesions occur after up to 97% of abdominal interventions causing chronic pain, infertility, and intestinal obstruction. Various concepts to prevent adhesions have been presented but mostly either have low efficacy or are not applicable in resective intestinal surgery or incomplete hemostasis. In this retrospective one-center clinical trial, the course of patients with extensive abdominal adhesiolysis and application of a recent starch-based formulation, 4DryField PH (4DF), is analyzed. CASE REPORT: Five female patients (age 65-83 years) underwent extensive open adhesiolysis with

The value of an albumin-based intravascular volume replacement strategy in elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The value of human albumin (HA) for treating hypovolemia is controversial. Less expensive alternatives such as hydroxyethyl starch (HES) are sometimes refused because of unwanted side effects. We prospectively randomized 50 patients older than 70 years old undergoing major abdominal surgery to receive either 5% HA (n = 25) or a third generation HES preparation (6% HES 130/0.4; n = 25) when mean arterial blood pressure was <60 mm Hg and central venous pressure was <10 mm Hg. Hemodynamics, inflammation (interleukin-6), endothelial activation-integrity (adhesion molecules), coagulation (thrombela

Resuscitation fluids for the treatment of hemorrhagic shock in dogs: effects on myocardial blood flow and oxygen transport.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The efficacy of using colloids vs. crystalloids in the treatment of hemorrhagic shock remains controversial. An important aspect in the treatment of hemorrhagic shock is the reestablishment of normal myocardial blood flow after fluid resuscitation. This study, therefore, was designed to investigate the effect of resuscitation with different plasma substitutes on myocardial blood flow and oxygen transport after acute hemorrhage in dogs. Forty-three dogs were anesthetized and bled into a heparinized Wiggers' reservoir to a mean arterial pressure of 35 mm Hg. The animals w

Type of fluid in severe sepsis and septic shock.

Fluid resuscitation is an essential aspect of the management of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock, especially in the early stages of disease. Which fluid should be used for this purpose has been a topic of ongoing and sometimes heated debate for many years, yet this is still little evidence to support one fluid over another. Each fluid type has specific adverse effects, and all fluids when given in excess can be detrimental. In this article, we will review the advantages and limitations of the key fluid types currently used for the resuscitation of critically ill patients with sepsi

The effects of H1- and H2-receptor blocking agents on postsynaptic potentials recorded from the bull-frog sympathetic ganglion.

The effects of H1-blockers (pyrilamine, diphenhydramine and promethazine) and H2-blockers (cimetidine, ranitidine) on the postsynaptic potentials of the bull-frog sympathetic ganglion were studied by means of the sucrose gap method. All the H1-blockers tested, at concentrations of 10(-6)-10(-4) M, depressed the amplitudes of both action and slow postsynaptic potentials in positive and negative directions in a concentration-dependent manner; these drugs had more potent inhibitory effects on postsynaptic potentials. In the case of H2-blockers, action and postsynaptic potentials were slightly dep

Intraosseous infusions in the emergency department.

For most emergency physicians and pediatricians, the frustrations encountered when obtaining intravenous access in infants involved in traumatic or medical emergencies are well known. Although it is rare that parenteral access is absolutely unobtainable in a pediatric patient, minutes and sometimes hours are often lost as futile attempts are made to cannulate a collapsed vein of such a patient. Many alternatives to such a crisis situation, including the intratracheal, intracardiac, and sublingual routes of administration, have been proposed and efficaciously used. Disadvantages to these altern

Rapid termination of intraoperative stimulation-evoked seizures with application of cold Ringer's lactate to the cortex. Technical note.

One major risk of intraoperative stimulation mapping is the production of stimulation-evoked seizures. Cold Ringer's lactate solution was applied directly to the irritated cortex in 22 patients with stimulation-induced seizures that occurred during intraoperative brain mapping procedures. The irrigation rapidly and reliably terminated these simple partial seizures and eliminated the need for intravenously administered short-acting barbiturates with antiepileptic properties. The authors describe a practical and simple method for controlling stimulation-induced seizure activity during brain mapp

Injection of low and iso-osmolar contrast medium decreases oxygen tension in the renal medulla.

The oxygen tension (PO2) in the renal cortex and outer renal medulla in 26 rats was studied by use of oxygen microelectrodes before and after injection of x-ray contrast media (CM). The CM, iopromide, ioxaglate and iotrolan were administrated intravenously in iodine equivalent doses (1,600 mg iodine/kg body wt). Ringer's solution was used as the control. In the outer medulla, all three CM induced a decrease in PO2: iopromide (N = 6) from 30 +/- 3 to 18 +/- 4 mm Hg; ioxaglate (N = 7) from 32 +/- 6 to 15 +/- 4 mm Hg; and iotrolan (N = 6) from 36 +/- 3 to 14 +/- 4 mm Hg. All these decreases were

ACL graft compression: a method to allow reduced tunnel sizes in ACL reconstruction.

PURPOSE: A common problem during ACL reconstruction is asymmetry of proximal-distal graft diameter leading to tunnel upsizing and graft-tunnel mismatch. Compression downsizing provides a graft of uniform size, allowing easy passage into a smaller tunnel. The purpose of this study was to quantify the graft compression technique and its effects on graft biomechanics and stability. It was hypothesised that compression downsizing would significantly reduce cross-sectional area (CSA); that no significant changes in graft biomechanics would occur; graft fixation stability would be improved. METHOD:

[Perioperative administration of bicarbonated solution to a patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy].

A 16-year-old man with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy underwent biopsy and nephrectomy under general anesthesia. Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction, and frequently accompanies elevation of lactic and pyruvic acid levels in the blood. It has been considered that problems of anesthesia for the patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy are the probability of hyperlactacidemia, the relevance to malignant hyperthermia, the possibility of myocardial disease and dysfunction of heart conduction system, respiratory depression due to muscle weakness, and so on.
