Rodent Malaria Erythrocyte Preference Assessment by an Ex Vivo Tropism Assay.

Circulating red blood cells consist of young erythrocytes (early and late reticulocytes) and mature erythrocytes (normocytes). The human malaria parasites, Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, have a preference to invade reticulocytes during blood-stage infection. Rodent malaria parasites that also prefer reticulocytes could be useful tools to study human malaria reticulocyte invasion. However, previous tropism studies of rodent malaria are inconsistent from one another, making it difficult to compare cell preference of different parasite species and strains. In vivo measurements of cell tropis

Predictors of parasite and pathogen infections in urban rodents of central Argentina.

Urban rodents are associated with parasites and pathogens, which present health risks for humans, but information on factors related to parasite and pathogen infection in rodents in cities of Latin America is scarce. This study analyzes the hosts, host community structure and environmental characteristics of parasite and pathogen fauna present in the three species of urban rodents in an urban area of South America. Rodents were captured seasonally in seven different neighborhoods. Digestive tracts were dissected under stereoscopic microscopy and feces were processed using a sedimentation techn

Tapeworms in Rodents from the Lower Anabar River Basin, with a Review of Species Diversity of Cestodes in Yakutia, Russia.

PURPOSE: We aimed to explore the first data on the fauna of cestodes in rodents from the Lower Anabar River Basin situated in extreme north-western Yakutia, Russia and to develop a biological and biogeographical framework for examination of the species diversity of cestodes from Yakutia, which is an important faunal transition zone in the eastern Palaearctic. METHODS: Field inventory of cestodes from rodents was conducted for the first time in the region of north-western Yakutia. Species diversity, intensity and prevalence of infection were assessed. RESULTS: It was noted a rather high (up t

Unsupervised quantification of naturalistic animal behaviors for gaining insight into the brain.

Neural computation has evolved to optimize the behaviors that enable our survival. Although much previous work in neuroscience has focused on constrained task behaviors, recent advances in computer vision are fueling a trend toward the study of naturalistic behaviors. Automated tracking of fine-scale behaviors is generating rich datasets for animal models including rodents, fruit flies, zebrafish, and worms. However, extracting meaning from these large and complex data often requires sophisticated computational techniques. Here we review the latest methods and modeling approaches providing new

Evaluation of Rodent Cage Processing Using Reduced Water Temperatures.

Studies published in 1994 and 2000 established a temperature range of 143-180 °F for effective cage sanitization in animal facilities. These 2 studies were, respectively, theoretical and based on experiments using hot water to sanitize bacteria-coated test tubes. However, such experimental methods may not capture the practical advantages of modern washing technology or account for the routine use of detergent in cage wash. Moreover, these methods may not translate to the challenges of removing adhered debris and animal waste from the surfaces being sanitized. A sample of highly soiled cage bot

Radiant catalytic ionization improves the microbiological status of rodent facilities without affecting the prooxidative status of mice.

The main microbial contaminants of rooms in which laboratory rodents are housed are bacteria and fungi. Restriction of microbial growth to below threshold levels requires the application of various sophisticated antimicrobial techniques that must be effective and safe for the animals. Some of the most commonly used techniques, including chemical disinfection, ventilation, filtration, sterilization and radiation, are not always sufficiently effective. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of a modern technique (i.e. radiant catalytic ionization (RCI)) on the microbiological

Rodents harbouring zoonotic pathogens take advantage of abandoned land in post-Katrina New Orleans.

Leptospirosis is a disease that disproportionately affects impoverished urban communities, but is likely to become more prevalent as changing climate alters flooding regimes. The persistence and transmission of the Leptospira pathogen is reliant on small vertebrate animals, predominantly rodents. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Peterson et al. demonstrate how changes in rodent diversity and abundances across the complex mosaic of abandonment and recovery investment in post-Katrina New Orleans can predict zoonotic infection prevalence. Understanding the ecological conditions that support pe

Rodent bites in a quadriplegic.

Rodent bites are infrequently reported in the medical literature. A rodent bite usually occurs only to individuals with sensory impairment. Rodent saliva can introduce fatal bacterial infections (rat-bite fever, leptospirosis or scrub typhus). We report a case of rodent bite in a patient suffering from post-traumatic quadriplegia.

Amplification of pathogenic Leptospira infection with greater abundance and co-occurrence of rodent hosts across a counter-urbanizing landscape.

Land use change can elevate disease risk by creating conditions beneficial to species that carry zoonotic pathogens. Observations of concordant global trends in increased pathogen prevalence or disease incidence and landscape change have generated concerns that urbanization could increase transmission risk of some pathogens. Yet host-pathogen relationships underlying transmission risk have not been well characterized within cities, even where contact between humans and species capable of transmitting pathogens of concern occurs. We addressed this deficit by testing the hypothesis that areas in

Toxoplasmosis in rodents: A systematic review and meta-analysis in Iran.

During recent years, implication of rodents in the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii is overlooked in Iran; thus, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in rodents of Iran. For this purpose, following the general methodology recommended for systematic reviews and meta-analysis, 5 English and 3 Persian databases were explored from 1 January 2000 till 10 September 2016 using related keywords. Finally, 9 out of 291 citations were met to be included in this study. Due to significant heterogeneity, the random-effects model was conducted (I2=93

A Field Study of Plague and Tularemia in Rodents, Western Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Kurdistan Province in Iran is a historical focus for plague and tularemia. This study aimed at assessing the current status of these two foci by studying their rodent reservoirs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rodents were trapped and their ectoparasites were collected. The genus and species of both rodents and ectoparasites were determined. Serological analyses of rodent blood samples were done by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for plague and by standard tube agglutination assay for tularemia. Rodent spleen samples were subjected to bacterial culture, microscopic examination, and re

Comparative anatomy of the prosubiculum, subiculum, presubiculum, postsubiculum, and parasubiculum in human, monkey, and rodent.

The subicular complex, including the prosubiculum (ProS), subiculum (Sub), presubiculum, postsubiculum (PoS), and parasubiculum (PaS), plays important roles in the medial temporal memory system and is heavily involved in many neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy. In the literature, the ProS (in primate) and PoS (in rodent) are inconstantly identified, making data comparison difficult across species. This review is an attempt to discuss equivalencies and extent of the five subicular components in human, monkey, and rodent based on available information on their cytoarc

Invasive rodent eradication on islands.

Invasive mammals are the greatest threat to island biodiversity and invasive rodents are likely responsible for the greatest number of extinctions and ecosystem changes. Techniques for eradicating rodents from islands were developed over 2 decades ago. Since that time there has been a significant development and application of this conservation tool. We reviewed the literature on invasive rodent eradications to assess its current state and identify actions to make it more effective. Worldwide, 332 successful rodent eradications have been undertaken; we identified 35 failed eradications and 20

Evidence for and possible mechanisms of non-genotoxic carcinogenesis in rodent liver.

Doses of chemicals which induce hepatocellular necrosis usually induce hepatic tumours if the dosing is frequent and is maintained for long periods. Such necrosis is usually evident within 48 h of the first administration. Similarly, chemicals that lead to marked proliferation of peroxisomes in the liver also usually induce hepatic tumours on pretracked regular dosing. For both of these phenomena failure to produce a certain level of effect, or to maintain it for sufficiently long periods, can result in the observation of a non-carcinogenic response. The exact dose/time requirements for carcin

[Arvicola terrestris (L.), the first rodent found naturally infested with Echinosoccus multilocularis, Leuckart, 1863, in France].

One of 400 A. terrestris trapped in the east of France (Jura and Alpes), contained a hepatic hydatid characteristic of the species E. multilocularis. 1 296 other Rodents, belonging to 11 species had been previously screened unsuccessfully. This positive result and the close resemblance between the distribution of the human cases of the disease and the areas of maximum proliferation of A. terrestris suggests that this species can play an important role in the persistence and geographic localisation of the zoonose.

Statistical analysis of comparative field trials of acute rodenticides.

The present method of analysis of data from comparative field trials of acute rodenticides was compared with two alternative methods of analysis, using computer simulation techniques. One of the proposed alternative analyses, the use of post-treatment census takes as a percentage of pre-treatment census takes in an analysis of variance, was found to be more accurate, to avoid a theoretical difficulty associated with the present method, and is computationally much simpler.

[Species composition and population dynamics of fleas on the small suslik in stable foci of plague on the Ergenin ridge].

The paper presents results of investigations of fleas from Citellus pygmaeus obtained during epizootological surveys in 1972-1974 (the Ergenin ridge, Kalmyk ASSR). The most high number of the main species of fleas of C. pygmaeus was observed in the first year of epizootic on the background of great abundance of the host (over 30 specimens per 1 hectare). In the following years the decrease in the number of C. pygmaeus was accompanied by the fall in the fleas number. The distribution of different species of fleas in a microbiotope is uneven in various periods. In all periods in nests fleas of N
