Assessing Head Acceleration Events in Female Community Rugby Union Players: A Cohort Study Using Instrumented Mouthguards.

BACKGROUND: The rapid growth of women's rugby union has underscored the need for female-specific player welfare protocols, particularly regarding the risk of head injuries. Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) play a vital role in gathering comprehensive data on head acceleration events (HAEs), including their frequency, magnitude, and spatial distribution during games and training. By doing so, iMGs offer valuable context for circumstances in women's matches that may increase player risk. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to contextualize HAEs in female community rugby players using instrumented mouthg…

A comparison of head impact characteristics during elite men's Rugby Union fifteens and sevens match play.

Different forms of rugby may pose distinct risks to head injury. Video of rugby match footage was analyzed using head impact magnitude, frequency, and time interval for 15s and 7s athletes. Impacts were reconstructed in laboratory, and finite element modeling was used to estimate maximum principal strain. No difference was found in impact frequency or time interval between the two forms. Significantly more head impacts of higher severity levels were documented during 7s. These findings provide objective comparisons between 7s and 15s which may guide risk mitigation strategies in managing brain…

Potential of Soft-Shelled Rugby Headgear to Lower Regional Brain Strain Metrics During Standard Drop Tests.

BACKGROUND: The growing concern for player safety in rugby has led to an increased focus on head impacts. Previous laboratory studies have shown that rugby headgear significantly reduces peak linear and rotational accelerations compared to no headgear. However, these metrics may have limited relevance in assessing the effectiveness of headgear in preventing strain-based brain injuries like concussions. This study used an instantaneous deep-learning brain injury model to quantify regional brain strain mitigation of rugby headgear during drop tests. Tests were conducted on flat and angled impact…

Routine, Routine, Routine: Sleep Regularity and its Association with Sleep Metrics in Professional Rugby Union Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining a consistent sleep and wake time is often reported as a key component of circadian rhythmicity and quality sleep. However, the impact of sleep onset and offset time variability on overall sleep outcomes are underreported in elite athlete populations. This study investigated the relationship between sleep onset and offset time variability using the sleep regularity index (SRI) and measures of sleep and well-being in professional rugby union athletes. Twenty-three professional male rugby union athletes (mean ± SD, age: 23 ± 3 y) underwent sleep monitoring via wrist actigr…

Rugby league ball carrier injuries: The relative importance of tackle characteristics during the European Super League.

Rugby league carries a high injury incidence with 61% of injuries occurring at tackles. The ball carrier has a higher injury incidence than the defender, therefore understanding mechanisms occurring during injurious tackles are important. Given the dynamic, open nature of tackling, characteristics influencing tackle outcome likely encompass complex networks of dependencies. This study aims to identify important classifying characteristics of the tackle related to ball carrier injurious and non-injurious events in rugby league and identify the characteristics capability to correctly classify th…

Listening first: mapping the inner game of an elite women's rugby national team and its staff.

INTRODUCTION: A well-developed intake assessment can identify athletes' and staff members' initial psychological needs and thus lay the foundation for targeted, evidence-based sport psychology interventions. However, empirical descriptions of such needs in elite women's collision-sport settings remain scarce. METHODS: In collaboration with the Italian Rugby Federation, the Italian Women's Rugby National Team, and its staff, this study used a mixed-methods intake assessment protocol to identify the priority psychological needs of the team. Qualitative results from 32 athletes and 12 staff memb…

Inducing and measuring identity levels in professional rugby players during immersion in an interactive virtual environment.

During a game, players experience substantial affective fluctuations, particularly through cognitive appraisal processes, which notably involves self-categorisation process. However, designing a mental training programme using the contextual elements of a game is still a challenge. Moreover, social contexts can be recreated in virtual reality and it has been demonstrated that people tend to have realistic affective and behavioural reactions to it. In this study, we recreated, in virtual reality, one of the key contexts that players can encounter during a rugby game, a try. After an embodiment …

A Case Report of Extensor Pollicis Longus Tendon Rupture: Delayed Diagnosis in a Professional Rugby Player.

Spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon has been reported to be uncommon. Several possible causes and precipitating factors have been reported for this rupture, including prior surgery to the distal radius. We report the case of an 18-year-old male professional athlete who presented with an inability to extend their left thumb. They presented with this condition after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for a fractured left distal radius. Findings were consistent with the rupture of the EPL tendon. The typical presentation of such a rupture is one to four month
