Effects of Rumination and Mindful Self-Focus Inductions During Daily Life in Patients With Remitted Depression: An Experimental Ambulatory Assessment Study.

Rumination has been proposed as an important risk factor for depression, whereas mindful attention is considered a protective form of self-focusing. Experimental studies have demonstrated differential effects of these modes when induced in the lab. However, their impact on daily life processes is poorly understood, particularly in individuals vulnerable to depressive relapses. The aim of our study was to examine short- and longer-term effects of repeated brief rumination and mindful self-focus inductions during daily life on momentary mood, cognitions, and cortisol in patients with remitted de

Anger rumination and aggressive behaviour in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Emotional instability and dyscontrolled behaviours are central features in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Recently, some cognitive dysfunctional mechanisms, such as anger rumination, have been found to increase negative emotions and promote dyscontrolled behaviours. Even though rumination has consistently been linked to BPD traits in non-clinical samples, its relationship with problematic behaviour has yet to be established in a clinical population. AIM: The purpose of the study was to explore the relationships between emotional dysregulation, anger rumination and aggressi

Genetic and environmental influences on rumination and its covariation with depression.

This study examined the extent to which rumination and depression share genetic and environmental influences in a community sample of adult twins (N=663). Twins completed multiple rumination questionnaires, a depressive symptoms questionnaire and a diagnostic interview. Rumination was moderately heritable (h2=.37-.41 for the latent variable) and substantially influenced by nonshared environmental factors, and these results were consistent across different measures. Nonshared environmental influences on rumination were larger for women than men. Depressive symptoms and diagnosis were influenced

The effect of rumination on craving across the continuum of drinking behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is an abstract, persistent, and repetitive thinking style that can be adopted to control negative affect. Recent studies have suggested the role of rumination as direct or indirect cognitive predictor of craving experience in alcohol-related problems. AIMS: The goal of this study was to explore the effect of rumination induction on craving across the continuum of drinking behaviour. METHODS: Participants of three groups of alcohol-dependent drinkers (N=26), problem drinkers (N=26) and social drinkers (N=29) were randomly allocated to two thinking manipulation tasks: di

Specificity of cognitive emotion regulation strategies: a transdiagnostic examination.

Despite growing interest in the role of regulatory processes in clinical disorders, it is not clear whether certain cognitive emotion regulation strategies play a more central role in psychopathology than others. Similarly, little is known about whether these strategies have effects transdiagnostically. We examined the relationship between four cognitive emotion regulation strategies (rumination, thought suppression, reappraisal, and problem-solving) and symptoms of three psychopathologies (depression, anxiety, and eating disorders) in an undergraduate sample (N=252). Maladaptive strategies (r

Cognitive Change across Cognitive-Behavioral and Light Therapy Treatments for Seasonal Affective Disorder: What Accounts for Clinical Status the Next Winter?

Efficacious treatments for seasonal affective disorder include light therapy and a seasonal affective disorder-tailored form of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Using data from a parent clinical trial, these secondary analyses examined the relationship between cognitive change over treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy, light therapy, or combination treatment and mood outcomes the next winter. Sixty-nine participants were randomly assigned to 6-weeks of cognitive-behavioral therapy, light therapy, or combination treatment. Cognitive constructs (i.e., dysfunctional attitudes, negative automa

A pilot study of cognitive remediation in remitted major depressive disorder patients.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with working memory (WM) impairments. These deficits often persist following remission and are associated with rumination, a recognized risk factor for depression relapse. The efficacy of WM-targeted cognitive remediation as a potential relapse prevention tool has not been investigated. The present pilot study aimed to investigate the feasibility, acceptability, and cognitive benefits of a WM-targeted cognitive remediation program in remitted depression. Twenty-eight MDD participants in remission were recruited. The intervention consisted of twenty

Reflecting on rumination: Consequences, causes, mechanisms and treatment of rumination.

We review research showing that rumination has multiple negative consequences: (a) exacerbating psychopathology by magnifying and prolonging negative mood states, interfering with problem-solving and instrumental behaviour and reducing sensitivity to changing contingencies; (b) acting as a transdiagnostic mental health vulnerability impacting anxiety, depression, psychosis, insomnia, and impulsive behaviours; (c) interfering with therapy and limiting the efficacy of psychological interventions; (d) exacerbating and maintaining physiological stress responses. The mechanisms underlying ruminatio

Post-event rumination and social anxiety: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Post-event rumination, the extent to which one engages in persistent, detailed, and negative thinking following social situations, serves as a risk process in the pathophysiology of social anxiety. Although a substantial body of research has assessed post-event rumination and social anxiety, this literature has produced inconsistent results. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine whether the magnitude of the association between post-event rumination and social anxiety varied as a function of questionnaire and/or task utilized. We included all studies reporting a correlat

Differences and similarities between obsessive and ruminative thoughts in obsessive-compulsive and depressed patients: a comparative study.

Repetitive, intrusive cognitive phenomena are central both to obsessive-compulsive patients - typically as obsessive thoughts - and to depressed patients - typically as ruminative thoughts. The objective of the present study is to compare obsessive and ruminative thoughts in non-depressed obsessive-compulsive and depressed patients. Thirty-four patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and 34 patients diagnosed with major depression disorder were asked to identify both a personally relevant obsessive and a personally relevant ruminative thought and to subsequently evaluate these th

The hidden link under gender differences: How violence exposure fuels adolescents' cyber aggression through negative rumination.

BACKGROUND: Cyber aggression among adolescents is an increasing concern with significant psychological and social consequences. Although previous research has linked violence exposure to cyber aggression, the cognitive-emotional mechanisms and gender-specific pathways underlying this relationship remain unclear. METHODS: A three-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 2394 middle school students (49.8 % male; M age = 15.70, SD = 2.63) from eight schools in Jiangxi Province, China. Participants completed self-report measures of violence exposure, negative rumination, and cyber aggression (b

Mediational role of rumination and reflection on irrational beliefs and distress.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive restructuring of maladaptive beliefs within many cognitive behavioural psychotherapies typically encourages the client to undertake self-reflection. However, whilst self-consciousness can aid self-regulation, it is also implicated in a broad Grange of psychopathologies. The extent to which self-consciousness is associated with psychological distress is yet to be fully determined, but recent literature suggests that irrational beliefs, as proposed within rational emotive behaviour theory (REBT) may play an important role. AIMS: The aim of the study was to test the med

Co-variation between stressful events and rumination predicts depressive symptoms: An eighteen months prospective design in undergraduates.

Rumination is a maladaptive form of emotion regulation and seems to be the cognitive mechanism linking stress to depressive symptoms. However, it remains to be investigated whether individuals' variation in rumination in relation to the occurrence of stressful events (e.g., phasic co-variation between stressful events and rumination) prospectively predict the experience of depressive symptoms in lengthy follow-up moments. In this eighteen months prospective design, a large unselected sample of undergraduates was tested before, during, and after a period with prominent naturally occurring stres

Eye movement pattern of attention bias to emotional stimuli in women with high premenstrual symptoms.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) refers to a group of symptoms linked to the menstrual cycle. Women with PMS have cognitive mode of rumination, which leads to their attention bias to emotional stimuli. This study investigated the biases for emotional information in women with high premenstrual symptoms (HPMS) compared with women with low premenstrual symptoms (LPMS). METHODS: A total of 38 women with HPMS and 44 women with LPMS completed self-report questionnaires and a free viewing task with eye-tracking technology. RESULTS: The questionnaire results indicate that wome

Motivational and emotional influences on cognitive control in depression: A pupillometry study.

Depressed people perform poorly on cognitive tasks; however, under certain conditions they show intact cognitive performance, with physiological reactivity consistent with needing to recruit additional cognitive control. We hypothesized that this apparent compensation is driven by the presence of affective processes (e.g., state anxiety), which in turn are moderated by the depressed individual's motivational state. Clarifying these processes may help researchers identify targets for treatment that if addressed may improve depressed patients' cognitive functioning. To test this hypothesis, 36 p

The Association Between Prosocial Behavior and Posttraumatic Growth Among Caregivers of Seriously ill Patients: A Mediation Model.

This study examined the association between prosocial behavior and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among Chinese caregivers of seriously ill patients, focusing on the mediating roles of social support and deliberate rumination. A total of 232 caregivers (79 males, 153 females) completed the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Prosocial Tendencies Measure, Social Support Rating Scale, and Event-Related Rumination Inventory. Regression and mediation analyses showed that prosocial behavior was positively related to PTG. Both social support and deliberate rumination significantly mediated this relationship

Do types of social isolation affect post-traumatic growth outcomes differently in patients undergoing hemodialysis? A moderated chain mediation model.

AIMS: The present study aimed to explore the effect of different types of social isolation on post-traumatic growth (PTG) and its underlying mediating and moderating mechanisms. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 274 patients undergoing hemodialysis between October and November 2022. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed relationships. RESULTS: Objective social isolation negatively predicted PTG. Deliberate rumination mediated the relationship between objective social isolation and PTG, and intrusive rumination and deliberate rumination formed a chain mediatin

Is It Personal? Context Moderates BPD Effects on Spontaneous Rumination and Distress.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with the use of maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) that predicts unstable interpersonal relationships and emotion dysregulation. Rumination, a maladaptive cognitive ER response, may be one mechanism by which those with BPD experience emotion dysregulation. However, it remains unclear whether emotion dysregulation is linked to rumination in general, or to rumination during interpersonal situations that often prove challenging for those with BPD. The present study examined whether interpersonal exclusion conferred an increased risk to spontane

Reexamining gender differences and the transdiagnostic boundaries of various conceptualizations of perseverative cognition.

Research examining gender differences in perseverative cognition (repetitive, negative, and difficult-to-control thoughts) has focused on depressive rumination and internalizing syndromes. This study examines the transdiagnostic role of depressive rumination, anger rumination, and repetitive negative thinking across gender on internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Utilizing an ethnoracially diverse sample (33% Black, 35% Latinx, 32% White non-Hispanic) of n = 1,187 young adults (49.5% women), we found equivalent instrument functioning across gender for depressive rumination (specifically br

Emotional and cognitive mechanisms of cyber-displaced aggression: exploring the impact of young adults' victimization.

This study aims to explore the mediation of revenge planning and anger rumination in the associations among face-to-face victimization, cyber victimization, and cyber-displaced aggression. Cyber-displaced aggression occurs when individuals direct their frustration towards innocent parties online due to an inability to retaliate directly. Data were collected from 489 young adults, between the ages of 18 and 25, from a university in the Midwestern United States. Measures included cyber and face-to-face victimization, cyber-displaced aggression, face-to-face displaced aggression, cyber victimizat
