Molecular Testing of Zoonotic Bacteria in Cattle, Sheep, and Goat Abortion Cases in Botswana.

Abortion is one of the major causes of economic losses in livestock production worldwide. Because several factors can lead to abortion in cattle, sheep and goats, laboratory diagnosis, including the molecular detection of pathogens causing abortion, is often necessary. Bacterial zoonotic diseases such as brucellosis, coxiellosis, leptospirosis, and listeriosis have been implicated in livestock abortion, but they are under diagnosed and under-reported in most developing countries, including Botswana. This study applied a recently developed multiplex high-resolution melting analysis technique, c

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli isolated from sheep in Namibia.

INTRODUCTION: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are an important group of emerging zoonotic pathogens carried in the intestinal tracts of ruminants. They can cause mild diarrhea and fatal disease characterized by hemolytic uremic syndrome, especially in children, the elderly, and immune-compromised individuals. METHODOLOGY: The aim of this study was to determine if sheep harbor STEC. Sheep feces (n = 40), brisket wool (n = 40), and 150 meat samples were collected from the flank (n = 35), rump (n = 35), brisket (n = 20), shank (n = 25), diaphragm (n = 10), and neck (n = 25) of slau

Toxinotyping of Clostridium perfringens fecal isolates of reintroduced Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus) in China.

Clostridium perfringens is an important pathogen causing sudden death syndrome, necrotic enteritis, and gas gangrene in ruminants, especially some deer species. Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus) is one of the world's rare species and is an endangered and protected species in China. Some Père David's deer in the Chinese Shishou Père David's Deer Preserve died due to C. perfringens infection. We investigated the toxin types and C. perfringens enterotoxin-positive (cpe(+)) strains of isolated C. perfringens in Père David's deer in China. We collected 155 fecal samples from the Beijing Nanh

Two outer membrane lipoproteins from Histophilus somni are immunogenic in rabbits and sheep and induce protection against bacterial challenge in mice.

Histophilus somni is an economically important pathogen of cattle and other ruminants and is considered one of the key components of the bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex, the leading cause of economic loss in the livestock industry. BRD is a multifactorial syndrome, in which a triad of agents, including bacteria, viruses, and predisposing factors or "stressors," combines to induce disease. Although vaccines against H. somni have been used for many decades, traditional bacterins have failed to demonstrate effective protection in vaccinated animals. Hence, the BRD complex continues to pr

Pattern of enterotoxin genes seg, seh, sei and sej positive Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine mastitis.

PCR detection of the genes encoding the newly described staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) SEG, SEH, SEI and SEJ was carried out for 104 randomly selected Staphylococcus aureus field strains isolated from cases of bovine mastitis. Sixty-one (58.7%) isolates were positive for one or more of these novel enterotoxin genes. Thirty-six field strains were classified as carrier of seg, 22 of sei gene and 23 were positive for sej gene. None of the 104 investigated ruminant S. aureus strains carried the seh gene. Thirty-seven of these S. aureus strains showed a combination of genes encoding enterotoxin t

Assessment of the cognitive attentional syndrome in children: an adaptation of the CAS-1.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that the metacognitive model is applicable to clinical child populations. However, few measures related to the model are available for younger age groups. A key concept of the model is the cognitive attentional syndrome (CAS), which encompasses the individual's worry and rumination, maladaptive coping strategies, and metacognitive beliefs. While the CAS has been successfully measured in adults, this has not yet been attempted in children. AIMS: The aim of this study was to adapt a measure of the CAS for use with children and investigate the measure's associations

The role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies in predicting the resilience, symptom severity, and quality of life of patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stressors contribute to the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and exacerbate the symptoms. The capability to cope with stress is an essential element in the management of IBS. This study assessed nine cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) and their role in predicting symptom severity, quality of life (QOL), and resilience in IBS subjects. METHODS: The scores regarding nine subscales of CERS were obtained by cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire (CERQ) and compared between study patients based on the severity and subtypes of IBS using one-way

Gastro-Intestinal Microbiota in Equines and Its Role in Health and Disease: The Black Box Opens.

Horses are large non-ruminant herbivores and rely on microbial fermentation for energy, with more than half of their maintenance energy requirement coming from microbial fermentation occurring in their enlarged caecum and colon. To achieve that, the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) of horses harbors a broad range of various microorganisms, differing in each GIT segment, which are essential for efficient utilization of feed, especially to use nutrients that are not or little degraded by endogenous enzymes. In addition, like in other animal species, the GIT microbiota is in permanent interplay with

Camel viral diseases: Current diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive strategies.

Many pathogenic viruses infect camels, generally regarded as especially hardy livestock because of their ability to thrive in harsh and arid conditions. Transmission of these viruses has been facilitated by the commercialization of camel milk and meat and their byproducts, and vaccines are needed to prevent viruses from spreading. There is a paucity of information on the effectiveness of viral immunizations in camels, even though numerous studies have looked into the topic. More research is needed to create effective vaccines and treatments for camels. Because Camels are carriers of coronaviru

Hemolytic uremic syndrome due to Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection.

The leading cause of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in children is Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection, which has a major outbreak potential. Since the early 2010s, STEC epidemiology is characterized by a decline of the historically predominant O157 serogroup and the emergence of non-O157 STEC, especially O26 and O80 in France. STEC contamination occurs through the ingestion of contaminated food or water, person-to-person transmission, or contact with ruminants or their contaminated environment. The main symptom is diarrhea, which is bloody in about 60% of patients and occ

Histophilus somni Surface Proteins.

The pathogen surface is usually the first site of interaction with the host. Histophilus somni was earlier thought to only have an outer membrane on its surface. Now it is known that the surface is composed of many virulence factors, including outer membrane proteins, lipooligosaccharide or endotoxin, a fibrillar network, and an exopolysaccharide. Outer membrane blebs, endotoxin, the fibrillar network, and the exopolysaccharide are also shed from the surface. This review will focus on the surface proteins of this pathogen that may colonize the mucosal surface of ruminants as a commensal or may

Epidemiology of Mycoplasma agalactiae infection in free-ranging Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) in Andalusia, southern Spain.

Mycoplasma agalactiae is the main causal agent of contagious agalactia syndrome in Spain. It is a severe disease of small ruminants, endemic in Mediterranean countries, that is characterized by mastitis, arthritis, and keratoconjunctivitis. This paper investigates the temporal, spatial, and host-related factors in the distribution of M. agalactiae infection from October 1996 to November 1998 and March 2002 to May 2003 in Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) populations from Andalusia, in southern Spain. The predisposing factors to infection among previously selected factors (year of sampling, climat

Myocardial cytochrome c oxidase activity in Swedish moose (Alces alces L.) affected by molybdenosis.

Since the mid-1980s, a 'mysterious' wasting disease has been afflicting the moose (Alces alces L.) population of south-western Sweden. In 1994, molybdenosis combined with copper deficiency was suggested as the cause of this complex syndrome of clinical signs, diversity of necropsy findings and changes in trace element concentrations. These findings were corroborated by scientists in many countries by similar observations in other ruminants, particularly cattle and sheep, and also by changes in trace element concentrations and clinical chemical findings in our model experiments with goats. Could immunomodulation be used to prevent prion diseases?

All prion diseases are currently without effective treatment and are universally fatal. The underlying pathogenesis of prion diseases (prionoses) is related to an autocatalytic conformational conversion of PrP(C) (C for cellular) to a pathological and infectious conformer known as PrP(Sc) (Sc for scrapie) or PrP(Res) (Res for proteinase K resistant). The past experience with variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which originated from bovine spongiform encephalopathy, as well as the ongoing epidemic of chronic wasting disease has highlighted the necessity for effective prophylactic and/or therapeu
