OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy of tele-ophthalmic examination (TOE) for common ocular conditions in comparison with the gold-standard in-person examination (IPE) for diagnosis and treatment advice.
METHODS: In a prospective, diagnostic accuracy validation study, we recruited 339 consecutive new patients, aged ≥16 years, visiting a vision centre (VC) associated with Aravind Eye Hospital in south India during January and February, 2020. All participants underwent the TOE, followed by IPE on the same visit. The in-person ophthalmologist was masked to the TOE diagnosis and treatment advice.

Stigma is a widely recognised public health issue. Many people with neurological disease and their families experience stigmatisation, adding to their burden of illness. Rural populations are typically small, lack anonymity, and often have a higher proportion of older adults with inadequate access to specialised services and resources. Although generally isolated, rural areas can offer benefits such as a sense of familiarity and interconnectedness. The purpose of this scoping review was to map the existing evidence on stigma associated with non-communicable neurological disease in rural adult

When parents die of or are infected with HIV, children might have to leave their own household and be displaced to other living arrangements and some may even be displaced multiple times. The objective of this study is to examine the association between household displacement and health risk behaviors among AIDS orphans (children who have lost one or both of their parents to HIV/AIDS) and vulnerable children (children living with HIV-infected parents) in rural China. The sample consisted of 1015 children (549 AIDS orphans, 466 vulnerable children) in family-based care. The children were assign

This article presents a microanalysis of interactions between female fieldworkers and women in rural Bangladesh, and a discussion of the broader organizational constraints that hamper service delivery. It is argued that the fieldworker, herself a rural woman, is faced with considerable demand for both maternal-child health (MCH) and reproductive health care services, but that operational constraints prevent her from realizing her potential in both of these areas. Qualitative data show that, in the eyes of rural women, contraceptive use and health care are intricately intertwined, and that this

A cross-sectional epidemiological study investigating the respiratory health of children in two Canadian communities was conducted in 1983-1984 in Tillsonburg, Ontario, located in a region of moderately elevated concentrations of transported air pollutants, and in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, situated in a low pollution area. There were no significant local sources of industrial emissions in either community. Seven hundred and thirty-five children aged 7-12 were studied in the first town and 895 in the second. Respiratory health was assessed by the measurement of the forced vital capacity (FV

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are increasingly apparent in adolescence, and those in rural communities are disproportionately impacted. Intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment (IHBLT) interventions have been shown to reduce risk factors for T2D and CVD; yet, for adolescents living in rural communities, these types of interventions are difficult to access and may be less effective due to unique barriers faced by rural adolescents. Tailoring IHBLT to the local rural context, particularly in ways that consider current and historical structural

A considerable proportion of people living with HIV remain unaware of their HIV status. In South Africa, individuals in rural areas often receive health care from both allopathic providers and traditional health practitioners (THPs). Our team piloted a task-shifting pilot study to determine the feasibility of THP-led HIV counselling and testing. Our team conducted semi-structured, qualitative interviews with healthcare workers, THPs who completed HIV counselling and testing training, and clients who received a positive test result. Interviews focused primarily on participant opinions about, an
