Regulation of Reactive Oxygen Species during Salt Stress in Plants and Their Crosstalk with Other Signaling Molecules-Current Perspectives and Future Directions.

Salt stress is a severe type of environmental stress. It adversely affects agricultural production worldwide. The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is the most frequent phenomenon during salt stress. ROS are extremely reactive and, in high amounts, noxious, leading to destructive processes and causing cellular damage. However, at lower concentrations, ROS function as secondary messengers, playing a critical role as signaling molecules, ensuring regulation of growth and adjustment to multifactorial stresses. Plants contain several enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants that can

Hydrogen Sulfide Alleviates Alkaline Salt Stress by Regulating the Expression of MicroRNAs in Malus hupehensis Rehd. Roots.

Malus hupehensis Rehd. var. pingyiensis Jiang (Pingyi Tiancha, PYTC) is an excellent apple rootstock and ornamental tree, but its tolerance to salt stress is weak. Our previous study showed that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) could alleviate damage in M. hupehensis roots under alkaline salt stress. However, the molecular mechanism of H2S mitigation alkaline salt remains to be elucidated. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important regulatory roles in plant response to salt stress. Whether miRNAs are involved in the mitigation of alkaline salt stress mediated by H2S remains unclear. In the present study, through

Role of primary protectors of plant cells in salinity tolerance: molecular mechanisms and adaptive strategies.

Salinity stress is among the most pervasive abiotic factors limiting plant growth and agricultural productivity worldwide, currently affecting more than 20% of irrigated croplands. Elevated salt concentrations induce osmotic imbalance, ionic toxicity, and oxidative stress, leading to disruptions in photosynthesis, metabolism, and plant development. To counteract these deleterious effects, plants have evolved intricate, highly coordinated defense systems comprising structural and functional cellular protectors. At the structural level, the cell wall, plasma membrane, vacuole, and peroxisome pla

Sequential extraction and organosolv pretreatment of halophytes: unlocking biomass recalcitrance for bio-based production.

The growing demand for sustainable bioresources has given prominence to lignocellulosic biomass as a possible alternative. Halophytes offer a specific advantage in this context, because they can grow on non-arable land with minimal freshwater requirements. To our knowledge, this is the first study to integrate organosolv fractionation to either Soxhlet extraction (SLE) or subcritical water extraction, (SWE) at 140 °C, as pretreatment strategies, into a single sequential process applied to halophyte biomass allowing the recovery of bioactive molecules from halophyte biomass. The spent fibers un

Silicon enhances salinity tolerance in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) through physiological, biochemical, and ionic regulation.

BACKGROUND: Soil salinization poses a significant threat to agricultural production, necessitating innovative agronomic strategies to mitigate its impact. Salinity stress is a critical abiotic factor that hampers tomato growth by causing ionic imbalances, oxidative damage, and disruptions in physiological systems. This study investigated the effect of sodium silicate (Na₂SiO₃) in reducing salt stress in tomato plants exposed to 75 and 150 mM NaCl. RESULTS: The results indicated that salinity substantially decreased plant growth, the content of photosynthetic pigments, and the uptake of essent

Salt sensitivity is associated with insulin resistance, sympathetic overactivity, and decreased suppression of circulating renin activity in lean patients with essential hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms by which a derangement of glucose metabolism causes high blood pressure are not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the relation between salt sensitivity of blood pressure and insulin resistance, which are important subcharacteristics of hypertension and impaired glucose metabolism, respectively. Effects on the renin-angiotensin and sympathetic nervous systems were also studied. DESIGN: The state of glucose metabolism was assessed by a hyperinsulinemic euglycemic glucose clamp technique and a 75-g oral-glucose-tolerance test in 24 essential hy

Matrix metalloproteinase-12, an indicator potentially contributing to the differential diagnosis and activity assessment of retroperitoneal fibrosis.

Fusarium crown rot (FCR) and soil salinity are major constraints to cereal establishment and productivity worldwide. Triticale (×Triticosecale Wittmack), a wheat-rye hybrid, is recognized for its broad adaptation; however, variation in FCR resistance and salinity tolerance among breeding materials remains insufficiently characterized. In this study, 85 triticale genotypes were evaluated for FCR resistance and germination-stage salinity responses, while 49 entries were evaluated for seedling-stage salt tolerance and 48 triticale genotypes were evaluated for agronomic traits. Salinity responses …

Integrative Multi-Scale Analysis Identifies the Hub Gene TRE1 Associating Trehalose Metabolism With Salinity Tolerance in Rice.

Salinity is a major constraint on rice (Oryza sativa L.) production, yet the regulatory hubs that distinguish tolerant from susceptible genotypes remain largely unknown. Using a computational and experimental pipeline combining time-series meta-transcriptomics, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), fuzzy clustering, network centrality metrics, promoter analysis, and molecular and physicochemical evaluations, we identified genotype-specific hub genes associated with salinity tolerance in rice. Analysis of RNA-Seq data from tolerant (Pokkali) and susceptible (IR29) genotypes acro

LncRNA MtCIR2 Negatively Regulates Response of Medicago truncatula Seedlings to Salt Stress by Targeting SOS2-Dependent Na Efflux via H2A Ubiquitination.

Increasing evidence indicates that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a regulatory role in plant responses to environmental stress. However, the epigenetic mechanisms behind the regulation of salt stress by lncRNAs remain largely elusive. We previously discovered that the lncRNA MtCIR2 of Medicago trnucatula negatively regulated seed germination under salt stress by altering endogenous ABA and GA concentrations via histone ubiquitination. Here we evaluated the roles of MtCIR2 in regulating response of M. truncatula seedlings to salt stress. We found that over-expression and mutation of MtCIR2

Reducing sodium intake in hemodialysis patients.

A low salt diet is beneficial for the whole population but has particular advantages for hemodialyis patients because of the role of salt restriction in the management of hypertension and interdialytic weight gain (IDWG). Education on dietary salt intake based on general healthy eating guidelines, such as the "DASH-sodium" diet, should be provided for staff, families, and carers as well as patients. Anuric hemodialysis patients will need to take in approximately 1 l of water for every 8 g salt consumed. Patients who restrict salt intake to <6 g/day, and drink only when thirsty, should gain no

Salinity tolerances of selected macroinvertebrates of the Sabie River, Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Salinization has been identified as the most important problem facing the managers of South African freshwaters. Laboratory-based toxicity tests were conducted to assess the tolerance of selected macroinvertebrates to elevated salt concentrations. Since the Kruger National Park is the focus of river research in South Africa, and the Sabie River is the least mineralized river in the park, 96-h acute toxicity tests were conducted using Sabie River water and an ephemeropteran mayfly Tricorythus sp. found in the river. Experiments were conducted inflowing water systems known as raceways. The toler

Disentangling the photochemical salinity tolerance in Aster tripolium L.: connecting biophysical traits with changes in fatty acid composition.

A profound analysis of A. tripolium photochemical traits under salinity exposure is lacking in the literature, with very few references focusing on its fatty acid profile role in photophysiology. To address this, the deep photochemical processes were evaluated by Pulse Amplitude Modulated (PAM) Fluorometry coupled with a discrimination of its leaf fatty acid profile. Plants exposed to 125-250 mm NaCl showed higher photochemical light harvesting efficiencies and lower energy dissipation rates. under higher NaCl exposure, there is evident damage of the oxygen evolving complexes (OECs). Genomic Survey of Salt Acclimation-Related Genes in the Halophilic Cyanobacterium Euhalothece sp. Z-M001.

Like other halophilic cyanobacterial genomes, the de novo-assembled genome of Euhalothece sp. Z-M001 lacks genes encoding keto-carotenoid biosynthesis enzymes, despite the presence of genes encoding carotenoid-binding proteins (CBPs). Consistent with this, HPLC analysis of carotenoids identified β-carotene and zeaxanthin as the dominant carotenoids. CBPs coexpressed with the zeaxanthin biosynthesis gene increased the survival rates of Escherichia coli strains by preventing antibiotic-induced accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). RNA-seq analysis of Euhalothece revealed that among vari

Molecular characterization of VvSDIR1 from Vitis vinifera and its functional analysis by heterologous expression in Nicotiana tabacum.

The proteins harboring really interesting new gene (RING) finger domains comprise a large family and play key roles in a variety of cellular processes. One among them is the tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. In the present study, we characterize Vitis vinifera salt- and drought-induced RING finger 1 (VvSDIR1) a homologue of the Arabidopsis SDIR1 gene obtained from V. vinifera. The VvSDIR1 gene was identified using in silico approaches and encodes a membrane-localized protein. This was evident as expression of VvSDIR1 fused with green fluorescent protein was detected in cell m
