Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) can present with extramedullary involvement known as myeloid sarcoma (MS). We present the case of a young woman who was diagnosed with AML and MS in bilateral orbits, brain, omentum, and retroperitoneum. She was treated with induction chemotherapy. Low-dose radiation was given to the orbits due to visual symptoms which resulted in complete response. The use of radiation therapy in orbital MS has not been studied extensively, and low dose may be adequate to achieve complete remission (CR) in selected patients.

A 28-year-old woman presented with a right breast mass and axillary lymphadenopathy. Biopsy of the breast mass revealed myeloid sarcoma (MS) staining positive for CD4, CD13, CD33, and CD68/KP-1. Bone marrow aspiration revealed leukemic cell infiltration (9%). Leukemic cells possessed cytogenetic abnormalities of +8 and t(9;11)(p22;q23) with +22 (lymph node only), and molecular analyses confirmed the MLL-AF9 fusion gene. After induction chemotherapy and 2(nd) consolidation therapy, complete remission was maintained. However, during consolidation radiotherapy for the breast mass, the disease pro

Survival following childhood neuroblastoma is improving with low rates of secondary myeloid neoplasms. We describe a 13-month-old male with intermediate risk neuroblastoma who developed an isolated scalp therapy-related myeloid sarcoma (t-MS). Developmental delays and two distinct malignancies prompted constitutional evaluation. Chromosomal microarray identified a 7.3 Mb deletion of 9q22.32 to 9q31.1. He remains in remission 11 months following hematopoietic cell transplant. Unusual presentations of rare diseases necessitate a multidisciplinary approach and adaptation of standardized protocols

Myeloid sarcoma represents the proliferation of myeloblasts of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at extramedullary sites. While extramedullary involvement in AML is uncommon in itself, isolated myeloid sarcomas, that is, myeloid sarcomas without any bone marrow involvement, are extremely rare and pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Here, we present the case of a middle-aged woman with isolated myeloid sarcoma in the stomach-an organ seldom involved by this disease. Additionally, the literature on the epidemiology, diagnosis, pathology, prognosis, and therapeutic options in myeloid sarcomas

We report an 18-months old boy with trisomy 21 who initially presented with myelodysplastic syndrome MDS, and later transformed into acute megakaryoblastic leukaemia AML. At presentation he was found to have some unusual findings namely multiple soft tissue masses over scalp, left elbow and over the knee joints as well as hard mass felt in left hip. Biopsy of soft tissue of scalp revealed granulocytic sarcoma. Generally granulocytic sarcoma is seen with AML-M2 and its association with AML-M7, to our belief has rarely been reported previously.

Myeloid sarcoma in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) manifesting as a non-healing tonsillar ulcer is an extremely rare occurrence. We report the case of a 57-year-old male smoker with a non-healing tonsillar ulcer who underwent tonsillectomy to rule out tonsillar carcinoma after failed antibiotic therapy. On postoperative day 2, he presented with a temperature of 40°C and white blood cell count of 34700/μL. Antibiotic therapy was begun; however, he died 1 day later due to pulmonary infection and septic shock. Though extremely rare, tonsillar involvement of MDS should be considered

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a neoplasm of immature granulocytes, monocytes, or both involving extramedullary sites. MS with no evidence of leukemia (nonleukemic MS) is very rare and the initial diagnosis can be difficult. This report describes an unusual case of nonleukemic MS of the liver in a 16-year-old patient presenting as debilitating hepatomegaly. A liver biopsy revealed diffuse infiltration by neoplastic cells of myeloid lineage (CD68, myeloperoxidase). A bone marrow biopsy showed no evidence of medullary involvement. The patient subsequently developed heart failure. Autopsy revealed infil

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) of the prostate is very uncommon with only 17 reported cases in the literature. Here, a singular case of a MS of the prostate discovered through investigations for urinary retention and revealing an acute leukaemia classified as an acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) with inversion 16 (inv16) according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification (AML-M4 with inv16 in the French-American-British (FAB) classification) in a 65-year-old man is presented. None of the previously reported and reviewed cases of prostatic MS were of AML-M4 type. Moreover, a translocation t(3;7)

Granulocytic sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor composed of immature granulocytic precursor cells. The most common sites of presentation are bone, periosteum, soft tissue, lymph node, skin, and infrequently small intestine. The tumor may develop during the course of acute myeloid leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia or other myelodysplastic disorders. It can occur without blood or bone marrow manifestations of leukemia and in this case, the diagnosis is difficult. Our patient was initially diagnosed as a case of T-cell non Hodgkin's lymphoma and received one cycle of CHOP with only transient imp

We report a rare case of myeloid sarcoma (MS) of the extrahepatic bile ducts presenting as obstructive jaundice in a patient without leukemia at time of diagnosis. A 75-year-old female presented with a one-month history of abdominal pain and jaundice. Computerized tomography scan of the abdomen showed stenosis of the extrahepatic bile ducts. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography disclosed an irregular narrowing of the common biliary duct, suggestive of a cholangiocarcinoma, and resection was performed. Histologic examination showed diffuse transmural infiltration of malignant cells. These cell

PURPOSE: Since the only three cases of granulocytic sarcoma among patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) seen at our institution during the last 12 years were each associated with the 8;21 translocation [t(8;21)], we sought to determine if this association is specific and more frequent than previously recognized.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report three patients with AML and t(8;21) who developed granulocytic sarcomas, and review the world literature.
RESULTS: Between 1980 and 1992, 53 cases of AML French-American-British (FAB) M2 were identified at our institution. Eight (15%) patients had

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS), also known as granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma, is a rare disease entity characterized by the emergence of an extramedullary tumor, which may be antecedent, coexisting, or manifest secondarily to an ongoing malignancy of lymphoid origin. Owing to its low prevalence, scientific reports addressing this matter comprise mainly retrospective studies with a limited number of participants, rather low-quality research, and only few case reports. Despite MS's rarity, the need for enhancing their diagnostic tools and refinement of their therapeutic regimens is broadly r

Acute leukemias are the most common childhood cancer in all age groups. Acute myeloid leukemias (AML) constitute about 15-20% of acute leukemias. Fatigability, pallor, fever, and bleeding are the most common presenting symptoms of AML. Hepatosplenomegaly and lymphadenopathy are commonly encountered during physical examination. In rare instances eruptions due to skin involvement and localized tumor masses (myeloid sarcoma) may be found. Myeloid sarcoma is especially seen in AML-M2 subtype. By cytogenetic analysis, in AML-M2 subtype t(8;21) is often seen and it is more probable to find inversion

INTRODUCTION: Isolated myeloid sarcoma, defined as an extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia with essentially normal bone marrow, is frequently misdiagnosed as other disorders due to its nonspecific presentation.
METHODS: A 31-year-old woman presented at Shanghai Changhai hospital with abdominal symptoms without obvious inducement.
RESULTS: Computed tomography scans revealed circumferential wall thickening of the terminal ileum with luminal narrowing, accompanied by moderate ascites. Primitive myeloid cells were identified in ascitic fluid through cytologic analysis. Flow cyt
