Scorpion stings are a major public health problem in Saudi Arabia. The main victims are children who accidentally tread on a scorpion, about 900 children being admitted to hospitals each summer for such stings. Many cases are fatal. The pathophysiology of scorpion stings is complex and its management is difficult. Almost all body systems are affected but circulatory shock and pulmonary oedema are the usual cause of death. The treatment is based on scorpion antivenom and symptomatic treatment of the envenoming manifestations in an intensive care unit. The currently used antivenom is a polyvalen

Perfusion defects and left ventricular dilation after experimental scorpion envenomation were evaluated in five dogs. Left Left ventricular dilation was observed in three dogs and right ventricular dilation in one other, in scans immediately after envenomation. Perfusion defects were inferred from scans in four dogs. The data are strongly suggestive of coronary hypoperfusion, and the mechanics of abnormal coronary flow after scorpion envenomation are discussed.

1. We describe a "sandwich" enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) sensitive to quantities of scorpion (Tityus serrulatus) venom (TsV) in the range of 1-3 ng/ml sample. 2. Cross-reactivity with the venom from the rattlesnake Crotalus durissus terrificus and with venoms from several snakes of the Bothrops genus was detected only at concentrations higher than 1 microgram/ml sample. 3. A conventional ELISA is also described for the detection of antibodies against TsV. 4. Analysis by Western Blot (WB) demonstrated a 25-kDa protein band common to TsV and to the venoms of Bothrops moojeni, B. jar

The haemolytic effect of the venom from scorpion Heterometrus fulvipes was studied using sheep erythrocytes. While there was no haemolytic effect seen directly by the erythrocytes, erythrocytes sensitized with homologous haemolysin were lysed by the venom. This factor in Heterometrus fulvipes venom having a 'complement like' haemolytic effect was found to be thermolabile and dialysable and sensitive to the action of 2-mercaptoethanol. It was identified as a low molecular weight peptide containing disulphide groups.

This work deals with a clinical and epidemiological study of the scorpion envenomation in Tunisia, from 717 scorpion stings recorded during a year at the Sfax Hospital with a mortality rate of 0.35%, all the patients died being less 15 years old. The serotherapy with a specific antivenin made in the Institut Pasteur of Tunis is the main element of the therapeutics.

Reactions induced by venom from the scorpion Buthus eupeus and by toxin of the venom have been studied on isolated organs and tissues as well as on intact body. It has been shown that substances interfering with the conduction of nerve excitation, with the mediator storage and interaction of the latter with synaptic receptors prevent the reactions induced by the venom and toxin, whereas ganglion-blocking agents do not affect these reactions. The catecholamine content in rat blood plasma has been found to be increased. It is assumed that the venom and toxin that affect the postganglionic nerve
