PATIENT: We report on an unusual case of a recurrent and progressive spinal pilocytic astrocytoma with metastatic spreading to the hypothalamus in a 14-year-old boy.
TREATMENT AND RESULTS: The patient underwent resection of an intramedullary atypical pilocytic astrocytoma classified as WHO grade II at the level of Th11/12 in 1997 and received local photon beam irradiation. Meningiomas are common intracranial and intraspinal tumors and constitute 15-20% of all primary brain tumors. Ten to 15% of all meningiomas are considered malignant. The main treatment of meningiomas is surgical resection. Meningioma recurrence following surgery is frequent. Cerebrospinal fluid-borne metastases were demonstrated by metrizamide myelography in 20 children with primary intracranial tumors, posterior fossa medulloblastomas being the most common. 131 samples of poppy seed imported in 1977, 1978, and 1979 were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides. The average and maximum residue levels were 0.05 and 0.42 ppm for BHC-isomers without lindane, 0.07 and 0.40 ppm for lindane, 0.016 and 0.14 ppm for total DDDT (DDT, DDD, and DDE). Other pesticides could not be detected. The residue level was much higher in the first half year of our examination. Poppy seed from Eastern Europe and Turkey showed appreciably higher contamination than imports from Western European countries.

Erythrocytes of a patient with hereditary erythroblastic multinuclearity with a positive acidified serum test (HEMPAS) were tested with many seed extracts and various other reagents. Serological evidence of membrane abnormality was confirmed. Various anti-H reagents reacted relatively poorly with HEMPAS cells. HEMPAS cells have both enhanced i and depressed H antigens. A brief note on a 'new' anti-H lectin (Cytisus glabrescens) is provided.

Pheochromocytomatosis is defined as a multifocal cell dissemination limited to the operatively opened space with no signs of distant metastasis. After primary adrenalectomy due to a pheochromocytoma this is a rare and underrecognized manifestation of a tumor recurrence. OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to review preoperative CT-guided seed localization in the breast and axilla performed at my institution for lesions not visualized on routine mammography and ultrasound after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. CONCLUSION. Ten lesions (seven in the axilla, two in the breast, and one in the supraclavicular region) were localized with a radioactive seed under CT guidance. All were successfully excised at surgery, suggesting that CT guidance can be used when needle localization is not feasible using mammography or sonography.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) recently emerged as an important gaseous signaling molecule in plants. In this study, we investigated the possible functions of H2S in regulating Arabidopsis seed germination. NaHS treatments delayed seed germination in a dose-dependent manner and were ineffective in releasing seed dormancy. Interestingly, endogenous H2S content was enhanced in germinating seeds.
