Parental attitudes and intensification of borderline personality traits: the mediational role of self-control and identity integration.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between parental attitudes, selfcontrol, identity integration, and traits of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in a non-clinical sample of adults. Additionally, it will examine the role of self-control and identity integration as direct predictors of BPD, and as potential mediators of the association between parental attitudes and BPD traits. METHODS: The study involved a group of 162 adults drawn from the general population. The study participants were asked to complete the Questionnaire of Retrospective Assessment of Paren

Disentangling the relationships among self-reflection, insight, and subjective well-being: the role of dysfunctional attitudes and core self-evaluations.

Central to many psychological schools of thought is the notion that self-reflection leads to self-insight which, in turn, leads to enhanced well-being. However, empirical research has found that although self-insight is typically associated with well-being, self-reflection is frequently not associated with self-insight or well-being. Past attempts to understand this conundrum have tended to focus on the role of ruminative self-refection. Using a different approach this study investigates the roles of dysfunctional attitudes and positive core self-evaluations. Using data from 227 participants,

Co-dependency. Assessment and recovery.

Co-dependency involves a particular system of thinking, feeling, and behaving toward ourselves and others that often causes emotional pain and leads to low self-esteem. Co-dependent behaviors are self-destructive. A process of recovery from these self-defeating behaviors is discussed.

Pilot data from the Self-Blame and Perspective-Taking Intervention for eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are characterized by altered eating behaviors and valuation of self-image, as well as difficulty establishing supportive social relationships. This pilot study evaluated feasibility, acceptability, and clinical responses to a novel and brief group-therapy intervention for EDs, the Self-Blame and Perspective-Taking Intervention (SBPI). The SBPI consisted of four sessions of experiential art therapy activities in conjunction with psychoeducation targeting interpersonal attributions and mentalization. Twenty-four outpatient, treatment-seeking women with EDs participated in

From Voice to Self: An Integrative Framework on Self-Voice Processing.

The self-voice plays a fundamental role in communication and identity yet remains a relatively neglected topic in psychological science. As AI-generated and digitally manipulated voices become more common, understanding how individuals perceive and process their own voice is increasingly important. Disruptions in self-voice processing are implicated in several clinical conditions, including psychosis, autism, and personality disorders, highlighting the need for integrative models to explain the self-voice across contexts. However, research faces two major challenges: a methodological one (i.e.

At the meniscus of self-understanding: Rethinking the examined life in technogenetic times.

Human development unfolds within a psychic ecology increasingly shaped by AI: we have entered technogenetic times. No longer merely a tool, AI structures how we understand ourselves and relate to others. In AI-mediated contexts, self-exploration often remains superficial, particularly among adolescents, eclipsing the messy, non-linear process of self-discovery, which depends on the capacity to tolerate uncertainty. I propose the metaphor of the meniscus - the tense, curved surface where liquid clings to the edge of its container - to describe a defensive psychic structure emerging in this cont

Omnipotent Responsibility Guilt: Theoretical, Clinical, and Empirical Features.

This article aims to give the reader an overview of the concept of omnipotent responsibility guilt, which, according to control-mastery theory (CMT), is the emotional manifestation of a set of pathogenic beliefs that make people believe that if they put their needs in the foreground and do not try to satisfy the needs of their important others, their significant others will suffer. These pathogenic beliefs were generally developed to adapt to early traumatic and adverse experiences, that is, experiences that disrupted the patient's sense of safety in acute, systematic, or chronic ways. In the

The Satir Model as a Systemic Transformational Approach: A Synthesis of Empirical and Conceptual Studies.

The Satir Model (SM) is an experiential and systemic approach increasingly used across clinical and community contexts. Although research shows benefits for emotional resilience, self‑esteem, communication, and family functioning, no synthesis has examined how SM is described as a transformational systemic therapy. This review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and identified 21 eligible studies from 5923 records. Using thematic synthesis, four interconnected domains of change were identified: intrapersonal processes (emotional regulation, self‑worth, coherence), relational and systemic processes

The Unseen Side of Nursing Leadership: Conceptualizing Leadership Blind Spots in Healthcare Settings.

BACKGROUND: Nursing leadership effectiveness depends not only on clinical expertise and formal authority but on the capacity to perceive how one's own conduct is experienced by staff. Leadership blind spots-unrecognized gaps between a nurse leader's self-perception and the actual impact of their behaviour on staff voice, trust, and psychological safety-represent a consequential and theoretically underdeveloped phenomenon in nursing management. Left unrecognized, these gaps may silently undermine staff well-being, patient safety, and organizational culture. AIM: To clarify and conceptually def

Effects of Physical Activity Interventions on Physical Self-Perception in College Students: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although the physical activities have demonstrated efficacy in improving physical self-perception, the findings of available studies in college students were conflicting. This review aimed to examine the effects of physical activity interventions on physical self-perception in college students. METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, EBSCOhost, Embase, Scopus, CNKI, WanFang, and Chinese Technical Periodicals were searched from inception to April 2024. Studies were included if they were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or non-RCTs (non-RCTs) that examined the effects

Parental criticism affects adolescents' mood and ruminative state: Self-perception appears to influence their mood response.

Feeling and/or being criticized is a known risk factor for various psychiatric disorders in adolescents. However, the link between the experience of social stressors and the development of psychopathological symptoms is not yet fully understood. Identifying which adolescent subgroups are more vulnerable to parental criticism could be of great clinical relevance. In this study, 90 nondepressed 14- to 17-year-old adolescents were exposed to a sequence of auditory segments with a positive, neutral, and finally negative valence, mirroring parental criticism. Their mood and ruminative states were a

The Narcissistic Grandiosity Scale: A meta-analytic examination of item convergent and discriminant validity.

The Narcissistic Grandiosity Scale (NGS; Rosenthal et al., 2020) is a 16-item adjective-rating scale with scores that measure narcissistic grandiosity, a central feature of the grandiose form of narcissism. The NGS was developed both to measure the narcissistic grandiosity construct and to do so in a way that maximally distinguishes narcissistic grandiosity from nongrandiose self-esteem, a construct with which narcissistic grandiosity is often conflated. Over the past few years, different shortened versions of the NGS have been recommended in the literature. To evaluate these shortened version

"My life disappeared in illness": bipolar disorder and themes in narrative identity.

Bipolar Disorder (BD) has substantial consequences for the course of life and the formation of self and identity. In the present study, we extended the existing literature by examining narrative identity. Fifteen female outpatients with remitted BD and fifteen non-clinical control participants described past and future chapters in their life stories. The chapters were coded for agency, communion, redemption and contamination. Patients diagnosed with BD described their past chapters with lower agency, lower communion and more contamination compared to the control group. Contrary to our expectat

Psychological aspects of pre-adolescents or adolescents with precocious puberty: A systematic review.

PROBLEM: Precocious puberty (PP) is an illness that appears when puberty, begins some years earlier than usual, provoking inferences in preadolescents and adolescents and their families. Therefore, the aim is to analyze if psychological consequences can be observed in groups of preadolescents or adolescents with PP. METHOD: A bibliographic search of the scientific literature was made following the PRISMA guide in the following databases: ProQuest, Psychinfo, Web Of Science, and Scopus. 592 studies were found, were uploaded to Covidence to make a screening, of which finally 6 were included for

Levels and Instability of Daily Self-Esteem in Adolescents: Relations to Depressive and Anxious Symptoms.

The current study examined whether individual differences in depressive and anxious symptoms relate to level of daily self-esteem and instability of daily self-esteem in adolescence. Participants were a racially and ethnically diverse sample of adolescents (79 girls, 65 boys; M age = 13.53 years). Adolescents reported on their depressive and anxious symptoms during a baseline home visit. Then, adolescents reported on their daily self-esteem over the course of 12 consecutive days. Using hierarchical linear modeling analyses, level of daily self-esteem was negatively associated with depressive b

Mental Imagery in Social Anxiety in Children and Young People: A Systematic Review.

Current cognitive models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adults indicate that negative self-images play a pivotal role in maintaining the disorder. However, little is known about the role of negative imagery in the maintenance of social anxiety for children and young people. We systematically reviewed studies that have investigated the association between imagery and social anxiety in children and young people. Four databases were searched for 'social anxiety' and related terms (including 'social phobia' and 'performance anxiety') combined with 'imagery', 'representation*', and 'observer p

An Indecent Society, Sick Souls, and the Weak Messianic Force of God: A Reflection on Religious Health in the Anthropocene Era.

This article posits that the dire realities associated with the Anthropocene Era will increase the presence of indecent societies that humiliate Others while securing the well-being of privileged groups. Within the society, humiliation, which is carried out by various political, social, and economic apparatuses, leads to civic carelessness and perfidy that accompanies both the foreclosure of the space of appearances, wherein people speak and act together, and the diminution of Others' self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-respect. It is argued that indecent societies depend on sick souls who

Changes in the sense of agency: Implications for the psychotherapy of bulimia nervosa- A case study.

A sense of agency is a transtheoretical concept that increases our understanding of important processes in psychotherapy. Agency can be described in terms of how strongly the person believes that she can have an impact on her problematic experiences and behaviors. In this case study, a patient's sense of agency in relation to symptoms of bulimia nervosa was assessed during 3 years of psychotherapy. Five distinct phases of agency in relation to eating disorder symptoms were identified: A false sense of agency or no agency at all, a weak sense of agency, a nascent sense of agency, a wavering sen
