Women's experiences of factors that facilitate or inhibit gestational diabetes self-management.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes rates have increased dramatically in the past two decades and this pattern of increase appears to relate primarily to the obesity epidemic, older maternal age and migration from world areas of high GDM risk. Women from disadvantaged and migrant backgrounds are most at risk of developing and of mismanaging this condition. The aim of the study was to explore the factors that facilitated or inhibited gestational diabetes self-management among women in a socially deprived area. METHODS: Fifteen pregnant women, with a diagnosis of gestational diabetes, were purposi…

A nursing process for self-management support in home healthcare: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a key role in providing self-management support to people living with long-term health conditions. Home healthcare patients often face difficulties self-managing because of disabilities and multi-morbidities. In addition, providing healthcare in patients' homes comes with specific challenges since the healthcare providers have less control over the care environment. Therefore, home healthcare is an ideal setting for investigating how nurses provide self-management support in complicated situations. AIM: This study focuses on the process and activities nurses undertake …

The role of social networks in supporting self-management in CKD: a narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing global health concern requiring effective self-management to mitigate progression and improve quality of life. While self-management is increasingly recognised as a socially embedded practice, the specific contributions of social network members to this process in CKD are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise and interpret existing literature on how social networks support individuals living with early-stage CKD and identify gaps in understanding. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review. Fourteen studies involving 560 participant…

Trends in non-coeliac gluten/wheat sensitivity: a self-managed problem?

INTRODUCTION: Self-reported non-coeliac gluten/wheat sensitivity (NCGWS) is triggered by gluten/wheat ingestion in patients without coeliac disease (CD) or wheat allergy. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, diagnoses of NCGWS appear to have declined. A gluten/wheat-free diet (GFD) remains the only management approach, though long-term adherence and outcomes are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate market trends and the long-term GFD adherence in NCGWS. Secondary objectives included evaluating perceived GFD efficacy and the need for further healthcare advice. METHODS: We analyzed UK market data

A novel method to manage a dislodged self-expanding transcatheter aortic valve.

Despite advancements in technology, operator experience, and procedural planning, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures are complex, and complications remain inevitable. Valve embolization may prove to be fatal and conventional rescue techniques are dependent on the anatomy of the aorta. We describe a case of postimplant embolization of a self-expanding valve during valve-in-valve application where the valve could not be stabilized due to the anatomy of the aorta and a novel technique was utilized to stabilize the valve in the aortic arch using a wire fixed to the left axill
