BACKGROUND: We explored the surgical technique of reducing the humeral head and repairing the fractures through a combined approach in the treatment of this complex injury.
METHODS: Six patients with posterior shoulder dislocations associated with proximal humerus fractures were enrolled in this study. The posteriorly dislocated head was first reduced through a shoulder posterior incision and the ruptured posterior capsular tissues were repaired simultaneously using a suture anchor. The fractures were then reduced and fixed with a PHILOS through a deltopectoral approach. The affected shoulder

PURPOSE: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) often lead to significant morbidity and are associated with an increased risk of mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the mortality rate in patients ≥ 65 years with PHFs. Mortality risk was assessed for 30-day/in-hospital, 1-year, and 5-year follow-up, and was compared based on treatment type.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Studies were included if they reported mortality rates at 30-day/in-hospital, 1-year, or 5-year in patients ≥ 65 years with PHFs. Data were analysed usi

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has rapidly supplanted hemiarthroplasty for acute proximal humerus fracture, driven by superior functional outcomes and lower revision rates. Whether this shift has altered perioperative morbidity at the population level remains poorly characterized. This study compared in-hospital outcomes between RSA and hemiarthroplasty in a national trauma cohort.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used the National Trauma Data Bank (2017-2022). Adults ( > = 18 years) admitted with proximal humerus fracture who underwent RSA (n = 2657) or hemiarthropla

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty is considered for displaced geriatric proximal humerus fractures (PHFs). This study compared clinical and radiographic outcomes of "Grammont-style" medialized and contemporary lateralized implants, hypothesizing that contemporary implants yield greater range of motion and tuberosity healing.
METHODS: This retrospective single-institution case series reviewed 74 shoulders (74 patients) treated for acute PHFs from 2008-2020. Patients received a medialized reverse shoulder arthroplasty (M-rTSA) (Delta Xtend; n = 31) or lateralized reverse shoulder arthro

BACKGROUND: Inferior shoulder dislocation (luxation erecta) is a rare condition, accounting for approximately 0.5% of all shoulder dislocations, typically resulting from high-energy trauma, such as falls or motor vehicle accidents.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case involved a man in his late 50s who sustained an inferior left shoulder dislocation with a greater tuberosity fracture after falling 2 m during work-related activities. Due to the patient's elevated BMI and absence of an anesthesiologist, general anesthesia was not feasible and local anesthesia led to inadequate pain relief and complicat

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are increasingly prevalent, particularly in the geriatric population, where they represent a significant burden both individually and societally. Vascular injury, though rare, can have profound implications for management and outcomes. The presence of these concomitant injuries has been shown to be associated with an increased length of hospital stay, total cost, and patient mortality underscoring the critical need for accurate identification of both osseous and vascular injuries to provide appropriate, comprehensive care. Despite extensive researc

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of proximal humerus fracture is an established procedure. Postoperative complications have been shown to have a significant impact on shoulder-specific outcome. Little is known to date about an influence on injury-independent quality of life.
AIM OF THE WORK: The aim of this retrospective study is to analyse whether patients with a poor functional outcome after surgically treated proximal humerus fracture also show a reduced general quality of life in the medium term. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of patients with poor functional outcome due to postsurgical

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder arthroplasty for proximal humerus fracture sequelae is known to provide significant patient improvement, yet this outcome varies with time, prosthesis type, and fracture sequelae. We outline the expected course of postoperative shoulder pain and function in patients with anatomical (ASA) or reverse (RSA) shoulder arthroplasty following different fracture sequelae.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 111 consecutive patients from our local shoulder arthroplasty registry, 32 underwent ASA for Boileau type 1 sequelae and 77 RSA patients were identified with Boileau types I, III, and

INTRODUCTION: Simultaneous fracture of the acromion and coracoid process represents a double disruption of the superior shoulder suspensory complex (SSSC). To date, the two largest reported series have comprised five and eight cases. The aim of this study was to investigate the functional outcome in patients who sustained this rare injury and to provide a review of the relevant literature.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients who were surgically treated between 2009 and 2014 were identified from medical records and the patients were asked to attend a follow-up examinati

Dislocation of the shoulder is a common injury and may be associated with a variety of complications. We report six cases of primary replacement of the humeral head where closed reduction of a shoulder dislocation associated with an undisplaced fracture of the humeral neck led to displacement of the neck fracture. All dislocations examined were anterior with a displaced greater tubercle fracture. The patients had undergone closed reduction at other medical centres and were referred to us because of iatrogenically displaced fracture-dislocations of the shoulder. Three were women and three were

Failure of manipulative reduction of acute anterior dislocation of the shoulder can occur from the interposition of an avulsed greater tuberosity. The treatment is surgical and good functional results can be achieved even in late cases.

We report the case of a 74-year-old woman who sustained a scapular spine (SS) fracture after a fall 4 weeks after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with locked 90°-double plating resulted in union of the SS fracture with a good outcome (subjective shoulder value: 80%; Constant score 67; 1 year) despite of an adjacent lateral acromion fracture 3 weeks after ORIF. This is the second description in the literature of a successful double plate ORIF with union of an SS fracture after RSA. SS fractures are known to lead to poor RSA outcomes with a high m

INTRODUCTION: Innovations in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) have improved outcomes and mitigated complications through improvements in implant design, surgical techniques, and enabling technologies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between technologic evolutions in rTSA and the incidence of acromion and scapular spine fracture (ASF). The authors hypothesize that ASF incidence has decreased over time and that this decrease is temporally associated with successive changes in implant design, surgical technique, and enabling technology within a single-design pl
