Dietary plant stanol ester supplementation reduces peripheral symptoms in a mouse model of Niemann-Pick type C1 disease.

Niemann-Pick type C (NPC)1 disease is a rare genetic condition in which the function of the lysosomal cholesterol transporter NPC1 protein is impaired. Consequently, sphingolipids and cholesterol accumulate in lysosomes of all tissues, triggering a cascade of pathological events that culminate in severe systemic and neurological symptoms. Lysosomal cholesterol accumulation is also a key factor in the development of atherosclerosis and NASH. In these two metabolic diseases, the administration of plant stanol esters has been shown to ameliorate cellular cholesterol accumulation and inflammation.

Phytochemical studies of Jurinea macrocephala roots from Western Himalaya.

Phytochemical investigation of the Jurinea macrocephala roots afforded six compounds namely β-sitosterol (1), lupenone (2), physcion (3), ptiloepoxide (4), 20, 21α-epoxytaraxastan-3β-ol (5) and chlorogenic acid (6). All the compounds were isolated for the first time in roots. The structures of the compounds were established by analysis of their spectroscopic (1H and 13C NMR) and spectrometric (MS) data, as well as by comparison of these with those reported in the literature. Metabolic profiling of chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions were also accomplished using NMR. In NMR analysis, ERETIC

Three diterpenoids, 1-oxomicrostegiol (1), viroxocin (2), viridoquinone (3), were isolated from the roots of Salvia viridis L. cvar. Blue Jeans. Five known diterpenoids, microstegiol (4), 7α-acetoxy-14-hydroxy-8,13-abietadiene-11,12-dione (5; 7-O-acetylhorminone tautomer), 7α,14-dihydroxy-8,13-abietadiene-11,12-dione (6; horminone tautomer), ferruginol and salvinolonyl 12-methyl ether (7) were also found in the roots together with 1-docosyl ferulate (8), and a mixture of 2-(4'-alkoxyphenyl) ethyl alkanoates (9). Two lupane triterpenoids, 2α-acetoxy-lup-20(29)-en-3β-ol (10), and 3β-acetoxy-lup-

Molecular docking analysis of tyrosinase with compounds from poly-herbal formulation for vitiligo treatment.

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentary disorder caused by the absence of melanocytes, affecting 0.1% to 2% of the global population, including both adults and children. Therefore, it is of interest to report the molecular docking analysis of tyrosinase (PDB: 1WX3) with compounds from poly-herbal formulation for vitiligo treatment. Analysis shows that the lead bioactive compounds exhibit binding energies ranging from -3.10 Kcal/mol to -7.36 Kcal/mol having 2-6 hydrogen bond interactions with key amino acid residues in the target protein. Beta-sitosterol showed the highest binding affinity (-7.36

Microchannel emulsification: A promising technique towards encapsulation of functional compounds.

This review provides an overview of microchannel emulsification (MCE) for production of functional monodispersed emulsion droplets. The main emphasis has been put on functional bioactives encapsulation using grooved-type and straight-through microchannel array plates. MCE successfully encapsulates the bioactives like β-carotene, oleuropein, γ-oryzanol, β-sitosterol, L-ascorbic acid and ascorbic acid derivatives, vitamin D and quercetin. These bioactives were encapsulated in a variety of delivery systems like simple and multiple emulsions, polymeric particles, microgels, solid lipid particles a

[Phytopharmacological review of bathurst burr (Xanthium spinosum L.)].

Bathurst burr (Xanthium spinosum L.) is an invasive species that is also known as a medicinal plant. Our goal is to make known the plant and its therapeutic effects in larger scale. The plant has been used in the Romanian folk medicine for urinary problems and various prostate diseases. The most important substances in Xanthii spinosi herba are: flavones and their derivates (quercetin, pendulin, iocein, centaurin and patuletin), polyphenols (caffeic- and chlorogenic acid and their derivates), sesquiterpene lactones (xanthinin, xanthatin-xanthanol-xanthumin derivates), diterpenes (atractyloside

[Relation between serum lipoprotein metabolism and biliary lipid metabolism].

This review concern with recent results regarding interrelationships between serum lipoprotein and bile acid metabolism. First, changes in bile acid metabolism in primary hyperlipoproteinaemia type II and type IV are described. In addition, influences of lipid-lowering drugs such as sitosterol, cholestyramine/colestipol, neomycin, nicotinic acid, clofibrate and thyroxin on serum lipoproteins and biliary lipid metabolism are discussed. Changes in lipoprotein metabolism in disorders of bile acid metabolism and effects of primary and secundary bile acids on lipoprotein metabolism, hepatic cholest

Unique sterol metabolite shifts in inflammatory bowel disease and primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) triggers chronic intestinal inflammation and is linked to primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Cholesterol homeostasis, tightly regulated under normal conditions, becomes disrupted in both inflammation and chronic liver disease. We analyzed fecal and serum levels of cholesterol synthesis precursors, oxysterols, and phytosterols in 87 patients with IBD (81 for serum analysis) including patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), 11 patients with PSC, 21 patients with PSC-IBD (18 for serum analysis), and 16 healthy controls (17 for serum anal

UPLC-ESI-MS/MS Profiling and Cytotoxic, Antioxidant, Anti-Inflammatory, Antidiabetic, and Antiobesity Activities of the Non-Polar Fractions of Salvia hispanica L. Aerial Parts.

Salvia hispanica L. is an annual herbaceous plant commonly known as "Chia". It has been recommended for therapeutic use because of its use as an excellent source of fatty acids, protein, dietary fibers, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. A literature survey concerning phytochemical and biological investigations of chia extracts revealed less attention towards the non-polar extracts of S. hispanica L. aerial parts, which motivates us to investigate their phytochemical constituents and biological potentials. The phytochemical investigation of the non-polar fractions of S. hispanica L. aerial

α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activity from Ethyl Acetate Extract of Antidesma bunius (L.) Spreng Stem Bark Containing Triterpenoids.

BACKGROUND: Buni (Antidesma bunius [L.] Spreng) has been used as a traditional antidiabetic agent in Asia. OBJECTIVE: The mechanism of antidiabetic properties was studied in this study by determine its α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. METHOD: Inhibition of α-glucosidase was performed in all fraction of Buni stem bark with acarbose and miglitol as standards. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of acarbose and miglitol was 5.75 and 59.76 μg/mL respectively while ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction was the most active fraction with IC50 of 19.33 μg/mL. Knowledge on ethnogynaecology of Indian Tribes- a comprehensive review.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ethnogynaecology is an emerging branch of science dealing with the treatment of gynaecological ailments by tribals, local healers, and traditional practitioners. The ethnogynaecological importance of medicinal plants in India is a fertile area to conduct more scientific studies to evaluate their potentialities, to isolate bioactive compounds, and thereby to develop drugs for the common gynaecological health-related issues faced by women everywhere. OBJECTIVES: The Indigenous medical knowledge systems of India have not been properly documented with special refer
