Skin blood flow (SBF) in allergic and irritant reactions was determined by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) in an attempt to differentiate these reactions in an objective way. 12 subjects with known allergy to nickel were patch tested with nickel sulphate, nickel chloride, and with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) 1, 2, 5 and 10%. BACKGROUND: The use of cosmetics is rising, and adverse reactions to these products are increasing. In Sweden, the Medical Products Agency (MPA) keeps a voluntary reporting system for such adverse reactions. However, the reporting is sparse, consisting almost only of cases with test-proven allergic contact dermatitis, thus under-reporting the more common irritant reactions.

The skin sensitization potential of 4 alkylalkanolamines (N-methylethanolamine, N,N-dimethylethanolamine, N-methyldiethanolamine and N,N-diethylethanolamine), was evaluated in a guinea pig maximation procedure by the method of Magnusson and Kligman. While all 4 alkylalkanolamines tested were irritating to the guinea pig skin, only N-methylethanolamine showed potential to induce allergic contact dermatitis. None of the remaining 3 alkylalkanolamines exhibited clear skin responses suggestive of sensitization.

In NE Brazil, low-income coastal residents ignore their conventional use and collect lightsticks stranded on beaches. BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: Past observations have shown increased irritancy in patients with "conditioned hyperirritability" due to active dermatitis, including atopic dermatitis (AD). In less active atopic conditions, irritancy levels are less certain. We have utilized 48-hour Finn Chamber testing with graded dilutions of sodium lauryl sulfate to detect irritancy thresholds in well-defined groups of patients with AD, inactive AD, and allergic respiratory disease with no dermatitis and in normal nonatopic subjects.

A pronounced skin reaction to rather low concentrations of dithranol is often observed. The question arises as to whether this represents an allergic or irritant reaction.
