The silent epidemic of loneliness: identifying the antecedents of loneliness using a lagged exposure-wide approach.

BACKGROUND: A large and accumulating body of evidence shows that loneliness is detrimental for various health and well-being outcomes. However, less is known about potentially modifiable factors that lead to decreased loneliness. METHODS: We used data from the Health and Retirement Study to prospectively evaluate a wide array of candidate predictors of subsequent loneliness. Importantly, we examined if changes in 69 physical-, behavioral-, and psychosocial-health factors (from t0;2006/2008 to t1;2010/2012) were associated with subsequent loneliness 4 years later (t2;2014/2016). RESULTS: Adju

Rhythmic Structure Shapes Dyadic Self-Other Representations Through Interpersonal Action Coupling.

Moving in unison to a musical beat can blur boundaries between individual movements, fostering prosociality. However, structured patterns of sounds and silences in rhythms (meter) allow various ways of moving to the beat. How do these different rhythmic interpretations affect social connectedness? Unacquainted dyads drummed in unison, and at more complex integer multiple and polyrhythmic ratios. Coordination requires continuously tracking who does what and when. We varied trackability by manipulating task-sharing (the same or separate drum pads, and audible or inaudible partner drumming). More

Cross-sector collaboration in transitional care of people experiencing homelessness: insights from an exploratory network analysis.

Interprofessional care coordinators informally collaborate across sectors to facilitate care of patients with multimorbidity and social complexity, such as in the case of ill-housed persons at hospital discharge. The complexity of homeless patients demands research on cross-sector collaborative interventions like medical respite, a cross-sector transitional care model. Relational Coordination (RC) and exploratory social network analysis were used to assess the cross-sector collaboration of a medical respite network (N = 15 organizations), by comparing administrative (n = 20) and frontline care

A Paradox of School Social Organization: Positive School Climate, Friendship Network Density, and Adolescent Violence.

Schools are often encouraged to foster a positive climate to reduce adolescent violence, but evidence on the effectiveness of this approach varies significantly. This study investigates the roots of this variation by testing alternative hypotheses about how positive school-level climate and school-level student friendship network density interact to shape adolescent violence perpetration. Research on informal social control and network closure suggests that the violence-reducing association of positive school climate will be enhanced among schools where students are more densely tied through t

Twentieth century morality: The rise and fall of moral concepts from 1900 to 2007.

Trends in the cultural salience of morality across the 20th century in the Anglophone world, as reflected in changing use of moral language, were explored using the Google Books (English language) database. Relative frequencies of 304 moral terms, organized into six validated sets corresponding to general morality and the five moral domains proposed by moral foundations theory, were charted for the years 1900 to 2007. Each moral language set displayed unique, often nonlinear historical trajectories. Words conveying general morality (e.g., good, bad, moral, evil), and those representing Purity-

Chronic multisite pain in adolescent girls and boys with emotional and behavioral problems: the Young-HUNT study.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of chronic multisite pain with high disability in relation to emotional or behavioral problems and resilience factors in adolescence. A second aim was to investigate if resilience factors could attenuate the associations between psychiatric symptoms and chronic multisite pain. The study was based on a large cross-sectional study carried out in Norway between 2006 and 2008 and included 7,070 adolescents aged 13-19 years. Chronic multisite pain was defined as pain at least once a week during the last 3 months, scoring high on a disability index,

Distinct patterns of gene expression in the medial preoptic area are related to gregarious singing behavior in European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

BACKGROUND: Song performed in flocks by European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), referred to here as gregarious song, is a non-sexual, social behavior performed by adult birds. Gregarious song is thought to be an intrinsically reinforced behavior facilitated by a low-stress, positive affective state that increases social cohesion within a flock. The medial preoptic area (mPOA) is a region known to have a role in the production of gregarious song. However, the neurochemical systems that potentially act within this region to regulate song remain largely unexplored. In this study, we used RNA seque…

Neuroscience of Emotional Intelligence: An Integrative Narrative Review.

Emotional intelligence (EI) has emerged as a critical neurocognitive construct linking affective processing, social behavior, and adaptive functioning. This integrative narrative review synthesizes multidisciplinary findings to map the biological underpinnings of EI across genetic, epigenetic, neuroanatomical, and neurophysiological domains. Drawing on evidence from neuroimaging, molecular genetics, neurochemistry, and brain connectivity studies, the review suggests EI as a product of dynamic interactions between prefrontal-limbic circuits, neurotransmitter systems, and environmentally sensiti

The Modifying Effect of Individual-Level Neighborhood Perceptions on the Relationship Between Census-Level Neighborhood Social Vulnerability and Cognition in Older Latinos.

Residents of vulnerable neighborhoods show lower levels of, and faster longitudinal declines in cognition across most, but not all studies. Mixed results may exist, in part, because residents' self-reported (individual-level) perceptions of their neighborhood do not always reflect Census-level measurements. We investigated both types of neighborhood characteristics to reexamine previously reported null associations between neighborhood vulnerability and cognition within an interactive socio-environmental framework. Self-identified Latinos (N = 224; x¯age = 70.4) without dementia completed a mo

Defensive networks provide basis for late pre-Hispanic Andean polities.

Regional polities may emerge from the development of a centralized hierarchy of a specific political regime, or from bottom-up patterns of interaction and collective action, especially mutual defense. In this study, we assess the proposition that the development of late pre-Hispanic polities of the south-central Andes was significantly shaped by defensive networks of pukaras (hillforts), which were in turn shaped by variable affordances for fortification in the mountainous Andean landscape. Pukaras are very common in the Andean highlands and date overwhelmingly to 1250 to 1500 CE, reflecting a

A mixture of diethylhexyl, diisononyl and dibutyl phthalate decreased anogenital distance, postnatal testosterone levels, and changed social behavior in Wistar rats.

Phthalates are chemicals interfering with the function of testosterone and are suspected to play a role in the emergence of neurodevelopmental diseases. This could be due to interference with brain development for which optimal testosterone levels are essential. We investigated the effect of prenatal and early postnatal exposure to a phthalate mixture on the anogenital distance (AGD), plasma testosterone levels and social behavior in rats. Pregnant rats were exposed to a mixture of diethylhexyl, diisononyl and dibutyl phthalate, each at a dose of 4.5 mg/kg/day, from gestational day 15 to postn

Non-Communicable Diseases, Longevity, and Health Span: A Hong Kong Perspective.

The health of different countries evolves in parallel with their economic development. Communicable diseases play a more prominent role in low-income countries compared with high-income countries, while non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become dominant in developing and developed economies. This transition has been accompanied by public health efforts to prevent NCDs, resulting in improvements in total life expectancy at birth (TLE). It is recognized that health determinants are not confined to healthcare systems, but that social determinants play a key role in health inequalities. The rap

Mechanisms underpinning flourishing at the interface of humans and other natural entities: an umbrella review.

Ecological-collective-flourishing (e-co-flourishing) describes the interconnected flourishing of human and non-human natural entities. Despite existing conceptual frameworks, translation into practice remains inadequate owing to insufficient synthesis of empirically tested mechanisms driving change across human and ecological systems. We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews examining mechanisms at the e-co-flourishing interface. Searches of seven databases and four grey literature sources identified nine eligible reviews. Evidence supported several cross-domain mechanisms, includ
