Experiences of visiting female sex workers, social interaction, support and HIV infection among elderly men from rural China.

OBJECTIVES: To make clear the roles of social interaction and social support in HIV infection among elderly men who visit female sex workers (FSW). METHODS: We conducted a case-control study: 106 newly HIV (+) vs. 87 HIV (-) elderly men who visited FSW with similar age, education levels, marital statuses, monthly expenses for entertainment and migration experiences. Experiences of visiting FSW, social interaction, and intimate social support were obtained. Backward binary logistic regression was applied. RESULTS: Cases' first visit to FSW happened at the age of 44.01 ± 12.25, older than cont…

Understanding guilt-related interpersonal dysfunction in obsessive-compulsive personality disorder through computational modeling of two social interaction tasks.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a high-prevalence personality disorder characterized by subtle but stable interpersonal dysfunction. There have been only limited studies addressing the behavioral patterns and cognitive features of OCPD in interpersonal contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate how behaviors differ between OCPD individuals and healthy controls (HCs) in the context of guilt-related interpersonal responses. METHOD: A total of 113 participants were recruited, including 46 who were identified as having OCPD and 67 HCs. Guilt-related int

Acute pain-related depression of operant responding maintained by social interaction or food in male and female rats.

RATIONALE: Clinically relevant pain is often associated with functional impairment and behavioral depression, including depression of social behavior. Moreover, recovery of function is a major goal in pain treatment. We used a recently developed model of operant responding for social interaction in rats to evaluate the vulnerability of social behavior to an experimental pain manipulation and the sensitivity of pain-depressed social behavior to treatment with clinically effective analgesics. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley male and female rats were trained to lever press for social access to another r…

Perinatal Asphyxia Reduces the Number of Reelin Neurons in the Prelimbic Cortex and Deteriorates Social Interaction in Rats.

Obstetrical complications of perinatal asphyxia (PA) can often induce lesions that, in the long-term, manifest as schizophrenia. A deterioration of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and a reduction in the number of GABAergic neurons are commonly observed in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. In this study, we investigated the link between PA, reelin and calbindin diminution and psychiatric diseases that involve social interaction deficits. This was achieved by observing the effect of 19 min of asphyxia on both subpopulations of GABAergic neurons. PA was produced by water immersion of fetu…

Relations among Social Anxiety, Eye Contact Avoidance, State Anxiety, and Perception of Interaction Performance during a Live Conversation.

There is building evidence that highly socially anxious (HSA) individuals frequently avoid making eye contact, which may contribute to less meaningful social interactions and maintenance of social anxiety symptoms. However, research to date is lacking in ecological validity due to the usage of either static or pre-recorded facial stimuli or subjective coding of eye contact. The current study examined the relationships among trait social anxiety, eye contact avoidance, state anxiety, and participants' self-perceptions of interaction performance during a live, four-minute conversation with a con…

Neural correlates of the empathic perceptual processing of realistic social interaction scenarios displayed from a first-order perspective.

The neural processing of impulsive behavior is a central topic in various clinical and non-clinical contexts. To investigate neural and behavioral correlates of the empathic processing of complex social scenarios, especially considering ecological validity of the experimental procedure, we developed and investigated a video stimulus inventory. It includes realistic neutral, social-positive, and reactive-aggressive action scenarios. Short video-clips showing these social scenarios from a first-person perspective triggering different emotional states were presented to a non-clinical sample of 20

When does jumping-to-conclusions reach its peak? The interaction of vulnerability and situation-characteristics in social reasoning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Persons with delusions tend to display a jumping-to-conclusions (JTC) bias which is considered relevant to delusion formation. However, its contribution in real life social scenarios is unknown. This study investigates whether JTC increases when decisions have to be made in delusion-relevant situations and whether the increase is uniquely moderated by delusion-proneness. METHODS: JTC was assessed by a social reasoning paradigm in 92 healthy participants that were classified as high, medium or low in paranoid ideation and social anxiety. Decisions had to be made for

Disrupted brain functional networks in adolescents and young adults with gaming disorder during social interaction: An fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: Gaming disorder (GD) is increasingly recognized for its adverse impact on social functioning, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear, particularly during real-time social interactions. This study examined neural differences in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and temporoparietal junction (TPJ) during cooperation and competition tasks in adolescents and young adults with GD. METHODS: Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we examined 175 male participants, classified into Gaming Disorder (n = 42), Hazardous Gaming (n = 69), and Healthy Control (n = 64) groups.…

A procedure to identify persistent and effort-independent individual differences in preference for heroin over rewarding social interaction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In some individuals, opioid use leads to decreased interest in socially relevant rewards. Recent studies showed that after extended-access heroin self-administration, rats strongly prefer social interaction over single unit-dose heroin infusions. We hypothesized that this strong social preference results from access to a suboptimal heroin dose during testing, and individual differences in heroin versus social choice would emerge if rats were given access to their 'preferred' heroin dose. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: In Experiment 1, we trained male rats to lever-press for so…

Social connection and gene regulation during the COVID-19 pandemic: Divergent patterns for online and in-person interaction.

BACKGROUND: Social connection has been linked to reduced disease risk and enhanced antiviral immunity, but it is unclear whether online soci … on social connection are associated with reduced CTRA gene expression during a period of restricted social interaction. In contrast, online social relationships show no such association. Digitally mediated social relations do not appear to substantially offset the absence of in-person/offline social connection in the context of immune cell gene regulation.

The effect of oxytocin nasal spray on social interaction in young children with autism: a randomized clinical trial.

Early supports to enhance social development in children with autism are widely promoted. While oxytocin has a crucial role in mammalian social development, its potential role as a medication to enhance social development in humans remains unclear. We investigated the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of intranasal oxytocin in young children with autism using a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial, following a placebo lead-in phase. A total of 87 children (aged between 3 and 12 years) with autism received 16 International Units (IU) of oxytocin (n = 45) or placebo (n =

Effects of rapamycin on social interaction deficits and gene expression in mice exposed to valproic acid in utero.

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway plays a crucial role in cell metabolism, growth, and proliferation. The overactivation of mTOR has been implicated in the pathogenesis of syndromic autism spectrum disorder (ASD), such as tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Treatment with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin improved social interaction deficits in mouse models of TSC. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) increases the incidence of ASD. Rodent pups that are exposed to VPA in utero have been used as an animal model of ASD. Activation of the mTOR signaling pathway was recently …

Sex-specific effects of early life stress on social interaction and prefrontal cortex dendritic morphology in young rats.

Early life stress has been linked to depression, anxiety, and behavior disorders in adolescence and adulthood. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is implicated in stress-related psychopathology, is a target for stress hormones, and mediates social behavior. The present study investigated sex differences in early-life stress effects on juvenile social interaction and adolescent mPFC dendritic morphology in rats using a maternal separation (MS) paradigm. Half of the rat pups of each sex were separated from their mother for 4h a day between postnatal days 2 and 21, while the other half remained …

Social cognitive bias and neurocognitive deficit in paranoid symptoms: evidence for an interaction effect and changes during treatment.

Persistent paranoid symptoms are best understood as having multiple causal mechanisms. An enhanced multidimensional understanding of paranoia may result from the convergence of two distinct measurement paradigms, experimental psychopathology and social cognitive research. This study investigated the role of neurocognitive deficits and emotion misperception bias as they relate to paranoid symptoms at two different time points in a sample of individuals with severe mental illness (primarily schizophrenia spectrum disorders [N=91]) undergoing intensive psychosocial rehabilitation. Before intensiv

An Exposome-Wide Interaction Study to Identify Hidden Environmental Factors Affecting Susceptible Populations: Application to Chemical-Social Vulnerability Interactions on Cognitive Function.

BACKGROUND: Exposome-wide association studies (ExWAS) systematically evaluate numerous environmental exposures, but typically focus on the mean effect, determining whether the association is statistically significant for the average individual. This approach may overlook environmental chemicals that specifically affect susceptible subpopulations. We conducted an exposome-wide interaction study (ExWIS) to identify environmental chemicals associated with cognitive function in the context of social vulnerability. METHODS: We examined associations between 147 biomarker-based chemicals and cogniti
