INTRODUCTION: Maternal health services, such as antenatal care (ANC) and institutional delivery, may reduce maternal and child health burdens. However, disparities in service coverage persist across Ethiopia. Pregnant women experiencing intersecting vulnerabilities face particularly significant barriers to accessing care. Understanding how social contexts shape maternal care-seeking behaviours can provide valuable insights into supporting underserved pregnant women, offering guidance for future research and practice. This study examines the influence of social and gender norms, as well as spou

Background/Objectives: Dengue is an emerging arboviral disease in temperate South America, where urban expansion, climate variability, and social vulnerability favor transmission. In Argentina, the endemic circulation of dengue was established in the late 1990s and outbreaks are reported every three or four years. Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed dengue virus (DENV) seropositivity and associated sociodemographic, environmental, and knowledge-attitudes-practices (KAPs) factors in three socioeconomically vulnerable peripheral neighborhoods of Santa Fe, Argentina, between December 201…

Conflict-affected women and girls living in protracted forced displacement settings are vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Yet, little is known about the risk factors for and lived experiences of STIs in complex humanitarian settings, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, where STIs have long been understudied. This qualitative study adapts the social ecological model to characterize the multi-level risks for and lived experiences of STIs among Syrian refugee women resettled in an urban refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon. Adopting a community-based sampling strategy

BACKGROUND: It is important to explore factors that may hinder early childhood development in AEDC Emotional Maturity and Social Competence domains as these underpin the foundation for health, well-being, and productivity over the life course. No previous study has examined whether, or to what extent, preeclampsia increases the risk of developmental vulnerability in social and emotional domains in early childhood.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study on the association between preeclampsia and childhood developmental vulnerability in emotional maturity and socia

Although the association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and homelessness among women is well documented, few studies have investigated this topic from a feminist standpoint, examining the impact of sociocultural factors such as rape culture. Based on a qualitative life course approach, individual interviews were conducted with 21 women who experienced both CSA and homelessness. Participants were between 29 to 60 years old (M = 45 years of age). Analyses revealed that CSA disclosure experiences were characterized by victim-blaming and disbelief. Women's traumatic experiences were further aggr

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: French Guiana has a high prevalence of metabolic diseases, which are risk factors for gestational diabetes mellitus. Despite routine screening for gestational diabetes, treatment is still challenging because of health inequalities and different cultural representations of disease and pregnancy. This study was conducted to assess the role of early and universal GDM screening on obstetrical and neonatal complications in a socially deprived population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted, in the level III maternity in French Guiana. Of 2136 deliveries, 223

Increasing facility-based delivery rates is pivotal to reach Sustainable Development Goals to improve skilled attendance at birth and reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The translation of global health initiatives into national policy and programmes has increased facility-based deliveries in LMICs, but little is known about the impact of such policies on social norms from the perspective of women who continue to deliver at home. This qualitative study explores the reasons for and experiences of home delivery among women living in rural Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: More than 95% of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases in Latin America occur in Brazil, most of them in the northeast. The objective of this study was to identify spatial clusters with the highest risks of VL and to analyse the temporal behaviour of the incidence and the effects of social vulnerability on the disease transmission dynamic in northeastern Brazil.
METHODS: All confirmed cases registered as residents in the state of Pernambuco during the period from 2007 to 2017 were analysed. The local empirical Bayesian method was applied and the association -between the VL incidence r…

Within a hierarchical framework for depressive and anxiety disorders, negative affect (NA) is posited to be indirectly related to social anxiety and depression through cognitive vulnerabilities, including intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and anxiety sensitivity (AS). However, few prior studies have considered whether the lower-order dimensions of IU (i.e., prospective and inhibitory IU) and AS (i.e., physical, cognitive, and social concerns) better explain the indirect relation between NA and social anxiety and depression. The indirect relations between NA and social anxiety and depression thro

BACKGROUND: Social vulnerability during pregnancy correlates with an increased risk of negative maternal and neonatal outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) endorse the implementation of continuous care strategies to enhance outcomes. This project aims to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of a continuous midwifery care model during pregnancy and delivery, as well as its impact on various maternal and neonatal outcomes for socially disadvantaged women in Iran.

Social isolation and loneliness can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disorders. In this study, we investigated the impact of chronic social isolation on the cognitive functions and structural-functional state of the brain in middle-aged rats. Ten-month-old male spontaneously hypertensive (SHR), Wistar-Kyoto (WKY), and Wistar rats were housed individually for 15 weeks, while the control animals of respective strains were housed in groups. After 13 weeks, all the rats were trained to complete a spatial task in a Barnes maze. After the behavi

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental illness that significantly impacts global health, with women showing twice the prevalence of men. This study employed the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model in female mice to investigate cellular and molecular changes in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) associated with depressive-like behaviors. Using single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-Seq), we examined transcriptomic alterations across various cell types in the PFC. Our results revealed that interneurons exhibited the most significant transcriptomic changes among all analyzed cell type

BACKGROUND: This qualitative case study explores the potential for operationalizing the social science framework of structural vulnerability through integrating it into the classic 4P model of biopsychosocial case formulation.
METHODS: Through phenomenological analysis of data from a series of longitudinal in-depth interviews with the case study participant, a middle-aged Native American man recently initiated on buprenorphine-naloxone for opioid use disorder after undergoing below-the-knee leg amputation, the study developed a biopsychosocial-structural case formulation identifying predispos

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing hip fracture surgery face notable risks of postoperative morbidity and mortality, and racial and socioeconomic disparities in outcomes exist. This study examined the effect of social vulnerability on outcomes after hip fracture surgery using the CDC's Social Vulnerability Index (SVI).
METHODS: A retrospective study of 464 patients undergoing hip fracture surgery at a single institution from July 2020 to June 2023 was conducted. Demographics, comorbidities, time to surgery, length of stay (LOS), and postoperative outcomes were compared between patients with lo…

The Danish Christmas Seal Homes offer a 10-week residential stay for socially vulnerable children. We aimed to examine the effects on body composition and cardiometabolic fitness variables of the standard program (SG) and whether substituting physical activity sessions with sessions from a football-based health education program is beneficial for the participants ("11 for Health"; SG+). Three hundred and nine children participated in SG (12.4 [1.6] y) and 305 in SG+ (12.4 [1.4] y). Fat percentage was lowered by 6% for females (from 37% to 31%) and 8% for males (from 36% to 28%), with no betwee

We aimed to investigate the extent to which social vulnerabilities correlated with lifetime experience of discrimination in healthcare among people with HIV (PWH) receiving services to improve treatment adherence and viral suppression. Individuals (N=687) enrolled in a Ryan White Part A medical case management program were surveyed about discrimination experienced in healthcare settings, reasons for any discrimination faced, and self-reported health. We merged data from the survey with data from the New York City HIV Surveillance Registry and a programmatic database to obtain client sociodemog

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the relationship between social factors and persistent COVID-19 health outcomes, such as onset of a disability after a SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) infection, is an increasingly important public health issue. The purpose of this paper is to examine associations between social vulnerability and new onset of a mobility disability post-COVID-19 diagnosis.
METHODS: We used data from the Michigan COVID-19 Recovery Surveillance Study, a population-based probability survey of adults with PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in Michigan between January 2020-May 2…
