Comparative transcriptome expression analysis in susceptible and resistant potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivars to common scab (Streptomyces scabies) revealed immune priming responses in the incompatible interaction.

Common scab disease in potato has become a widespread issue in major potato production areas, leading to increasing economic losses. Varietal resistance is seen as a viable and long-term scab management strategy. However, the genes and mechanisms of varietal resistance are unknown. In the current study, a comparative RNA transcriptome sequencing and differential gene signaling and priming sensitization studies were conducted in two potato cultivars that differ by their response to common scab (Streptomyces scabies), for unraveling the genes and pathways potentially involved in resistance withi

Antibacterial Activities of Crude Secondary Metabolite Extracts from Pantoea Species Obtained from the Stem of Solanum mauritianum and Their Effects on Two Cancer Cell Lines.

Endophytes are microorganisms that are perceived as non-pathogenic symbionts found inside plants since they cause no symptoms of disease on the host plant. Soil conditions and geography among other factors contribute to the type(s) of endophytes isolated from plants. Our research interest is the antibacterial activity of secondary metabolite crude extracts from the medicinal plant Solanum mauritianum and its bacterial endophytes. Fresh, healthy stems of S. mauritianum were collected, washed, surface sterilized, macerated in PBS, inoculated in the nutrient agar plates, and incubated for 5 days …

A novel zinc finger protein encoded by a couch potato homologue from Solanum tuberosum enables a sucrose transport-deficient yeast strain to grow on sucrose.

A yeast strain deficient in secreted invertase but expressing a cytoplasmic sucrose synthase has been used to select for potato genes that enable growth on sucrose as the sole carbon source by suppressing the sucrose uptake deficiency. Besides the already known sucrose transporter gene (StSUT1), ten different suppressor clones were identified and characterized. One of these cDNAs (PCP1) enabled efficient growth of the mutant yeast strain and mediated uptake of radiolabeled sucrose. The cDNA encodes a protein of 509 amino acids which is highly hydrophilic and thus does not seem to represent a t

Low-Cd tomato cultivars (Solanum lycopersicum L.) screened in non-saline soils also accumulated low Cd, Zn, and Cu in heavy metal-polluted saline soils.

Many reclaimed tidal flat soils feature high salinity and heavy metal (HM) accumulation. Consumption of vegetables cultivated in this type of cropland may cause health risks. Low-Cd tomato cultivars (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were identified in non-saline soil in our previous studies (Tan et al. 2014). However, further research should determine whether these low-Cd cultivars will maintain in the repeatability and stability in saline soil and whether they have low accumulation abilities for accompanying metals (such as Zn and Cu). A soil-pot trial was implemented to measure Cd, Zn, and Cu concen…

Cytochrome c dependent, antimycin-A resistant respiration in mitochondria from potato tuber (Solanum tuberosum L.). Influence of wounding and storage time on outer membrane NADH-cytochrome-c-reductase.

Cytochrome c has two stimulatory effects on respiration of mitochondria especially those from wounded potato tuber. In the first place a stimulation of succinate- and NADH-consuming, antimycin-A-sensitive respiration, which reaches a maximal value at low cytochrome c concentrations, has been found. In the second place, at higher concentrations of cytochrome c a stimulation of NADH-consuming respiration occurs, which is antimycin-A-resistant, but KCN-sensitive. This antimycin-A-resistant, NADH-consuming respiration is absent, when no cytochrome c is added to the reaction medium. It is insensiti
