Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS): expert consensus on diagnosis and management.

Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a disorder primarily characterised by changes in the eye and optic nerve, but changes in brain features are also noted after spaceflight. SANS is caused by exposure to prolonged microgravity and at least one feature of SANS has been reported in 81% of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronauts. Early clinical features of SANS are observed in almost all individuals undergoing spaceflight, with the condition exacerbated by the duration of spaceflight. Knowledge of the features of SANS and the aetiology has rapidly grown

Digital Analysis of Closest Speaking Space in Dentates-Method Proposal and Preliminary Findings.

AIMS: The aim of this study is to identify methods for the digital analysis of the closest speaking space in dentates and to assess certain particularities using digital analysis. METHOD: For the adult patients included in this study, traditional dental casts were fabricated, and interocclusal registrations of the maximal intercuspal position and of the closest speaking space were taken using polyvinyl siloxane. Dental casts in both positions were scanned using a dental laboratory scanner, and digital analysis was conducted using the 3Shape 3D Viewer. RESULTS: The interocclusal distance corr

Overnight heat in sleep spaces of housed and unhoused residents: results and recommendations from a Knoxville, Tennessee, case study.

Nighttime heat is an important factor in heat-health outcomes, though nighttime heat exposure and its impacts are poorly understood. We assessed overnight heat in indoor (n = 12) and outdoor (n = 3) living spaces in Knoxville, Tennessee, using iButton Hygrochrons in August 2021. Indoor sleep spaces, all of which were air conditioned, reported a variety of overnight conditions. Indoor sleep spaces were both warmer and cooler than outdoor temperatures overnight, and some participants noted having physical health effects of overnight heat in their homes. Downtown outdoor sleep spaces, including a

In-vivo cortical thickness estimation from high-resolution T1w MRI scans in healthy and mucopolysaccharidosis affected dogs.

Cortical thickness measurement estimated from high-resolution anatomical MRI scans may serve as a marker of cortical atrophy in clinical research applications. Most of the working algorithms and pipelines are optimized for human in-vivo data analyses that offer robust and reproducible measures. As animal-models are widely utilized in many preclinical phases of clinical trials the need for an optimized automated MRI data analysis to yield reliable data is warranted. We present a processing pipeline optimized for cortical thickness estimation of canine brains in native and template spaces. Preli

A Study Space Analysis and Narrative Review of Trauma-Informed Mediators of Dating Violence.

Research linking child maltreatment and dating violence in adolescence and emerging adulthood has proliferated in the past two decades; however, the precise mechanisms by which these experiences are related remain elusive. A trauma-informed perspective suggests four particularly promising mediators: maladaptive attachment, emotion regulation difficulties, emotional distress, and hostility. The current article characterizes the status of the empirical literature examining these four mediators using a study space analysis and a narrative review of existing research. An extensive literature searc

Maternal depression effects on infant frontal EEG asymmetry.

In the space of two decades, research has moved from documenting the associations between frontal EEG asymmetry profiles and positive/negative affect, to later reinterpreting these as approach/withdrawal behavior patterns, to documenting individual differences in relationships between EEG and temperament and inhibition/uninhibition. The research has associated greater relative right frontal EEG activation with depression in adults and in depressed women and their infants. Stability of these EEG profiles has been noted from the neonatal stage to early infancy to the preschool years. More recent

Trajectory data analyses for pedestrian space-time activity study.

It is well recognized that human movement in the spatial and temporal dimensions has direct influence on disease transmission(1-3). An infectious disease typically spreads via contact between infected and susceptible individuals in their overlapped activity spaces. Therefore, daily mobility-activity information can be used as an indicator to measure exposures to risk factors of infection. However, a major difficulty and thus the reason for paucity of studies of infectious disease transmission at the micro scale arise from the lack of detailed individual mobility data. Previously in transportat

A Novel Ultrasound Assessment Technique of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament to Account for the Valgus Stress Effect of Gravity on the Medial Elbow.

BACKGROUND: The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow is commonly injured in baseball athletes. When assessed in the supine abducted and externally rotated (ABER) position using stress ultrasonography (sUS), even before applying a valgus load, gravity pulls on the forearm, creating an initial valgus load that may distort the resting joint space measurement. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to measure the valgus stress effect of gravity on the resting joint space and determine if a varus-stressed joint space provides a better baseline measurement. It was hypothesized th

Social Determinants of Health, Cardiovascular Risk Factors, and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in Individuals of Vietnamese Origin.

In 2022, the Vietnamese population in the United States (US) comprises 2.2 million individuals, and Vietnam ranks as the sixth most frequent country of origin among immigrants in the US. The American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health have called for research to define the burden of cardiovascular risk factors, cardiovascular disease, and their determinants across Asian American subgroups, including Vietnamese Americans. Despite these calls, Vietnamese Americans remain remarkably overlooked in cardiovascular research in the US. Studies in Vietnam, small cross-sectional sur

[Problems in CT diagnosis of the aging brain].

The different methods of measuring the intracranial CSF spaces on CT images are described. The values obtained are demonstrated to separate the normal aging brain from the brain in senile dementia of Alzheimer's type. The CT criteria for the diagnosis of multi-infarct dementia are shown. The significance of CT studies in senile depression is discussed. The problem of vascular encephalopathy (leuko-araiosis) in normal aging of the brain and in dementia is considered in particular, and even the occurrence of intracranial space-occupying lesions and normal pressure hydrocephalus, as treatable cau

A live online exercise program for older adults improves depression and life-space mobility: A mixed-methods pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Aging is the primary risk factor for sarcopenia and mobility limitations. Exercise reduces these risks, but older adults have low levels of participation in physical activity and exercise. We investigated the preliminary effectiveness of a live, online exercise program on community-dwelling older adults' physical activity levels. METHODS: A mixed-method pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted according to CONSORT 2010 statement: extension for pilot and feasibility trials. Sedentary older adults (65-80 years) were randomly assigned to the online exercise intervention (ACTIV

HRCTCov19-a high-resolution chest CT scan image dataset for COVID-19 diagnosis and differentiation.

INTRODUCTION: Computed tomography (CT) was a widely used diagnostic technique for COVID-19 during the pandemic. High-Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT), is a type of computed tomography that enhances image resolution through the utilization of advanced methods. Due to privacy concerns, publicly available COVID-19 CT image datasets are incredibly tough to come by, leading to it being challenging to research and create AI-powered COVID-19 diagnostic algorithms based on CT images. DATA DESCRIPTION: To address this issue, we created HRCTCov19, a new COVID-19 high-resolution chest CT scan image

Synthesis and Comprehensive Studies of Be-IV-N2 (IV=Si, Ge): Solving the Mystery of Wurtzite-Type Pmc21 Structures.

The research for wurtzite-type ternary nitride semiconductors containing earth abundant elements with a stoichiometry of 1 : 1 : 2 was focused on metals like Mg or Zn, so far. The vast majority of these Grimm-Sommerfeld analogue compounds crystallize in the β-NaFeO2 structure, although a second arrangement in space group Pmc21 is predicted to be a viable alternative. Despite extensive theoretical and experimental studies, this structure has so far remained undiscovered. Herein, we report on BeGeN2 in a Pmc21 structure, synthesized from Be3N2 and Ge3N4 using a high-pressure high-temperature app

Towards Healthy Aging: Influence of the Built Environment on Elderly Pedestrian Safety at the Micro-Level.

As vulnerable road users, elderly pedestrians are more likely to be injured in road crashes due to declining physical and perceptual capabilities. Most previous studies on the influence of the built environment on elderly pedestrian safety focused on intersections or areal units. Using a district of Shanghai as the study area, this research investigated the effects of the built environment at the road segment level with elderly pedestrian collision, taxi tracking point, point of interest, street view image, open street map, land use, housing price, and elderly population datasets. In particula

Eye tracking deciphers key factors influencing children's implicit visual preferences for street space elements on school commuting routes.

Under the background of the child-friendly city initiative, school commuting routes serve as the core daily space connecting families and schools for children aged 6-14, and the design of their street environments directly impacts children's travel experiences and healthy development. Existing studies mostly focus on the macro planning of child-friendly spaces, lacking systematic decomposition and quantitative analysis of children's visual preferences for specific environmental elements in school commuting routes. To fill this gap, this study uses eye-tracking technology (Tobii Eye Tracker 5)

COSOS-1k: A Benchmark Dataset and Occlusion-Aware Uncertainty Learning for Multi-View Video Object Detection.

Confined spaces refer to partially or fully enclosed areas, e.g., sewage wells, where working conditions pose significant risks to the workers. The evaluation of COfined Space Operational Safety (COSOS) refers to verifying whether workers are properly equipped with safety equipment before entering a confined space, which is crucial for protecting their safety and health. Due to the crowded nature of such environments and the small size of certain safety equipment, existing methods face significant challenges. Moreover, there is a lack of dedicated datasets to support research in this domain. I

Biodiversity isn't measured in tons: Making sense of nature in the context of sustainable agriculture.

In this review, we articulate several important but often overlooked concepts, trends, and perspectives in the biodiversity monitoring space, specifically in the context of transforming agriculture and the wider food system. We describe the common approaches to biodiversity monitoring-those focused on species, communities, functions, habitats, etc.-and the methods and tools commonly used to track change. We then describe a set of fundamental ecological principles that are often overlooked by practitioners entering the agrobiodiversity space for the first time, particularly those with technical

Garage sales as more-than-human affinity spaces: Reimagining social participation in later life.

In response to the call for more research on the processes of how aging assemblages entwine, unwind, and mutually flourish, this paper examines older adults' participation in garage sales (an event not unlike yard, tag, or moving sales), which serves as social spaces where humans and non-humans come together to co-create interactions and connections. Drawing on the concept of "affinity space," this paper presents a case study of the Garage Sale, a decades-long community signature event of a continuing care retirement community in the northeastern United States. Data collection occurred between

[Review and reflection of the research of history of plague in modern China in recent 25 years].

Influenced by the research on history of disease abroad, the research on the history of plague in modern China began in 1989. For the recent 25 years, the related researches on plague mainly took place in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, the Northeast and Shanxi, supplemented by other places, showing its clear regional characteristic, with diversified research views, methods and application of materials. As an important content of research on disease history, the research of history of plague in modern China revealed obvious defects, viz. mainly traditional and one-way or linear research, reflecting the
