A content analysis of the professional journal of the British Society of Speech Therapists. I: The first 10 years. Spotlight on 'Speech' 1935-1945.

The 24 editions of the professional journal 'Speech' published between 1935-1945 were examined by use of content analysis. The use of this approach enabled an in-depth survey of the professional, clinical and political issues of the period which saw the beginning of speech and language therapy as a profession. Two main areas were focused upon: the development of the professional body and the authored papers which appeared in the journal. 'Speech' at that time can be viewed as a blend of today's 'European Journal of Disorders of Communication' with today's 'Bulletin'.

Different clinical perspectives of good and poor therapy sessions.

This study investigated differences in causal attributions made by student clinicians taking actor and observer roles in good and poor therapy sessions. One hundred thirty-four graduate student clinicians in speech-language pathology were asked to imagine a hypothetical good or poor therapy session in which they took either the role of a clinician working with a client in a session or that of a clinician observing the session. To account for the session's hypothesized outcomes, clinicians taking the actor role cited client causes more frequently than other causes while clinicians taking the ob…

`It's not just linguistically, there's much more going on': The experiences and practices of bilingual paediatric speech and language therapists in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of bilingualism in the United Kingdom, few speech and language therapists (SLTs) are bilingual themselves. Most SLT research on bilingualism has generated knowledge to inform service delivery for bilingual clients, but few studies have investigated how being a bilingual SLT influences one's professional experiences and practices. Better understanding the unique positionality of bilingual SLTs can yield critical insights to meaningfully address issues of diversity, inclusion and equity in the profession. AIMS: To investigate the experiences and practices

Equitable service provision for inclusive education and effective early intervention.

This paper illustrates one model of providing an integrated paediatric speech and language therapy service which attempts to meet the demands of both inclusive education and effective early intervention. A move has been made from location-oriented therapy provision to offering children and their families equal opportunities to have appropriate intervention according to need. The model incorporates the philosophy of inclusive education and supports the development of current specialist educational establishments into resource bases of expertise for children with special needs in mainstream scho

Recommendations for clinicians based on parents' experiences.

Three mothers of children with severe communication disabilities describe their experiences with speech-language pathologists and the intervention process. The parents were asked open-ended and descriptive questions. Their responses provide valuable insights and direction for professionals interested in working more closely with families of children with disabilities. The mothers describe their role as primary case managers for their children's treatment programs. They identify the type of speech-language pathologist they prefer to work with their child and the professional guidance they find

AIDS/HIV: implications for speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

Great strides have been made in the past year in uncovering the pathogenesis of AIDS/HIV, in administering certain drugs to retard the course of AIDS/HIV, in allaying the concerns of the general public, and in dispelling the many myths regarding AIDS/HIV. ASHA's Committee on Quality Assurance has provided this update as a result of obtaining the most current information from CDC and related AIDS/HIV literature. Human service providers are not at high risk of getting AIDS/HIV as a result of their work with clients, even if they regularly care for persons with AIDS/HIV (American College Health A

Using the Experience Sampling Method to Examine the Details of Dosage in School-Based Speech Sound Therapy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to collect practice-based evidence regarding dosage in speech sound therapy sessions in school-based settings. Dosage is the number of trials within a therapy session for any one particular child. School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) face a variety of obstacles to service delivery, often making the implementation of evidence-based practices difficult. To that end, we were interested in exploring how therapy parameters, such as group size and session frequency were associated with dosage. METHOD: Using the experience sampling method, we quer

Primary Progressive Aphasias and Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews two of the primary progressive aphasias (PPAs), disorders characterized by the early and predominant impairment of language, and primary progressive apraxia of speech, a degenerative motor speech disorder that is closely related to PPA. An outline of the history and controversy surrounding how these disorders are classified is provided before the article focuses on each disorder's clinical and imaging features. RECENT FINDINGS: Over the past decade, the classification of degenerative speech and language disorders has been refined. Clinical, imaging, and

Speech-Language Pathologists' Responsivity During School-Based Therapy.

PURPOSE: This study explored speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') verbal responsivity during school-based speech-language therapy sessions. Further, we examined the relations between SLP responsivity and child initial language skill and child talk during sessions, and the associations between SLP responsivity and child language gains over a school year. METHOD: Study methods involved a secondary analysis of 26 one-on-one school-based speech-language therapy sessions involving certified SLPs and children with developmental language disorder in the United States. Session data were manually tra

Babble Boot Camp for Infants With Down Syndrome: Piloting a Proactive, Caregiver-Led Intervention Designed to Boost Earliest Speech and Language Skills.

PURPOSE: Down syndrome (DS) is associated with lifelong difficulties with verbal communication, beginning in infancy when vocalizations are sparse and first words emerge late. Because DS is diagnosed at or even before birth, these difficulties can be anticipated, yet there have been limited developments of systematic, proactive interventions. The purpose of the pilot study described here was to investigate feasibility and potential benefits of such an intervention toward a fully powered clinical trial. METHOD: We piloted Babble Boot Camp (BBC), a proactive, parent-led speech and language inte

Speech-language pathologists' confidence levels and professional development needs in motor neurone disease: An Australian survey.

PURPOSE: Clinician confidence is vital for effective patient-professional relationships, yet limited research has explored speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) confidence in supporting people with motor neurone disease (MND). This study investigated speech-language pathologists' self-reported confidence across key speech-language pathology domains (swallowing, oral secretions, oral hygiene, airway management and communication) in MND. It also investigated associated demographic variables, barriers, facilitators and professional development needs. METHOD: Seventy-two speech-language pathologis…

Update on the current state of speech and language testing in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) causes alterations in speech and language across multiple domains, including semantic content, pragmatics, prosody, morphosyntax, phonology and timing/fluency, with some of these changes detectable early in the disease course. Definitive biomarker assessments of AD are often invasive or resource-intensive; there is a need for scalable measures in screening and monitoring AD. Advances in natural language processing and automated transcription can quantify speech and language features from structured tasks and natural conversations. This review summarizes domain-specific

Evidence for the treatment of co-occurring stuttering and speech sound disorder: A clinical case series.

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of evidence to guide treatment for children with co-occurring stuttering and speech sound disorder. Some guidelines suggest treating the two disorders simultaneously using indirect treatment approaches; however, the research supporting these recommendations is over 20 years old. In this clinical case series, we investigate whether these co-occurring disorders could be treated concurrently using direct treatment approaches supported by up-to-date, high-level evidence, and whether this could be done in an efficacious, safe and efficient manner. METHOD: Five pre-schoo

Translating the Power of Precision Medicine Into the World of Communication Disorders.

PURPOSE: Precision medicine is an emerging approach to medical diagnostics, prognostics, and intervention that takes an individual's genetic, environmental, and lifestyle-related profile into account to improve outcomes in medical conditions such as diabetes and cancer. Here, we explore how principles of precision medicine can be leveraged in the field of speech-language pathology. METHOD: We reviewed the literature and report the following: (a) brief introduction to precision medicine, (b) review of a prophylactic intervention for infants at a genetic risk for speech/language disorders, (c) …

Spelling Facilitates Reading: A Tutorial on the Spell-to-Read Approach.

PURPOSE: According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), prevention, identification, assessment, and intervention of children who are learning to read and write are within the scope of practice for school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Furthermore, for SLPs who work in the school setting, it is not uncommon to have struggling readers and poor spellers on their caseloads. Importantly, for students who have difficulty in spelling, their spelling errors are among the early indicators of dyslexia and can provide a means for identifying readers who may benefit from

The speech-language pathologist's role in supporting the development of self-regulation: A review and tutorial.

PURPOSE: Children's engagement in self-regulation is a strong and positive predictor of their social and academic success, making self-regulation an important focus for caregivers and clinicians. The aims of this article are to provide a framework for understanding self-regulation and to identify strategies speech-language pathologists can use to integrate self-regulation work into their clinical practice. METHOD: Empirically supported considerations describing the developmental progression from co-regulation to self-regulation are outlined, and the effects of stress on self-regulation are di
