Double many-body expansion potential energy surface for ground state HSO2.

A global potential energy surface is reported for the ground electronic state of HSO2 by using the double many-body expansion (DMBE) method. It employs realistic DMBE functions previously reported from accurate ab initio calculations (in some cases, fine tuned to spectroscopic data) for the triatomic fragments, and four-body energy terms that were modelled by fitting novel ab initio FVCAS/AVTZ calculations for the tetratomic system. In some cases, FVCAS/AVDZ energies have been employed after being scaled to FVCAS/AVTZ ones. To assess the role of the dynamical correlation, exploratory single-po

Dynamic viscoelastic properties of spread monostearin monolayer in the presence of glycine.

The monostearin monolayer at the air-aqueous interface is more expanded in presence of glycine and at higher temperature from both the surface pressure-area per molecule (pi-A) isotherms and static elasticity-surface pressure (E(s)-pi) curves. The dilational viscoelastic properties of monostearin monolayer spread on the subphase of glycine solution have been determined by the dynamic oscillation method and discussed as a function of surface pressure, temperature, and frequency. At the frequency of 50 mHz, the monostearin monolayer on pure water shows negative dilational viscosity and is viscoe

[Simultaneous separation of organic acid and organic salts by electrostatic ion chromatography].

The electrostatic ion chromatographic column was prepared by coating conjugated acid salt micelles on the surface of octadecyl silica stationary phase. Pure water was used as mobile phase, and the conductance detector was connected on-line to electrostatic ion chromatograph. The conditions under which organic acid and organic salts were detected were studied. The mechanism for the above separation is discussed. Sodium benzoate and citric acid in Lichee drink were separated and determined. This method is rapid, simple with little interference and good reproducibility without any pollution since

Effect of Selected Anionic and Cationic Drugs Affecting the Central Nervous System on Electrical Properties of Phosphatidylcholine Liposomes: Experiment and Theory.

Interactions between phospholipid membranes and selected drugs affecting the central nervous system (CNS) were investigated. Small, unilamellar liposomes were used as biomimetic cell membrane models. Microelectrophoretic experiments on two-component liposomes were performed using the electrophoretic light scattering technique (ELS). The effect of both positively (perphenazine, PF) and negatively (barbituric acid, BA) charged drugs on zwitterionic L-α-phosphatidylcholine (PC) membranes were analyzed. Experimental membrane surface charge density (δ) data were determined as a function of pH. Quan

Electrospray encapsulation of water-soluble protein with polylactide. I. Effects of formulations and process on morphology and particle size.

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was encapsulated with poly (lactide) (PLA) using an electrospray technique in which a sufficiently strong electric field was applied to overcome the surface tension of a droplet and to produce small particles. The influences of PLA solvent type, PLA solution concentrations; the viscosity, electrical conductivity and surface tension of PLA solutions and PLA/BSA emulsions; and the applied voltage and flow rate on the morphology and size of the BSA-loaded PLA particles were examined. 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) was a better solvent for PLA than dichloromethane. Adaptive smart hydrogels driving precision bone healing in pathological contexts.

Pathological bone defects remain formidable clinical challenges due to their dynamically hostile microenvironments, typified by chronic inflammation, acidosis, hypoxia, and oxidative stress. Conventional therapeutic strategies, dependent on static scaffolding and passive drug release, often fail to meet the demand for precise and adaptive intervention. Emerging adaptive smart hydrogels, endowed with dynamic regulatory capabilities, are reshaping the paradigm of bone repair by enabling spatiotemporally controlled drug delivery, degradation, immunomodulation, and cellular regulation. Harnessing

[The activity of the internal laryngeal muscles during respiration].

Electromyographic study of the laryngeal internal muscles in dogs showed that the character and intensity of the electrical activity are specific for each muscle not only in frequency and amplitude of potentials, but also in the relation to the phases of the breathing cycle. Phasic electrical activity of these muscles occurred either in inspiration or expiration, whereas in some muscles the activity was recorded both in inspiration and expiration. Besides the phasic electrical activity, a less pronounced constant activity in some muscles was observed. The functional value of this phenomenon ma

Dynamic hydroxide transport intrusively damages anion exchange membranes.

Conventional assessments of anion exchange membrane (AEM) stability primarily focus on static alkaline resistance, failing to capture critical degradation mechanisms under operating conditions involving ion transport. Herein, we report that dynamic ion transport processes fundamentally govern AEM stability degradation. Through 1,000 h of continuous electrically driven ion transport, severe mechanical damage, including crater formation, occurred on the ion-entry side of the AEM. This damage caused a significant decay in fuel cell performance (>40%) and a drastic 15-fold increase in hydrogen cro

Quasi-static pipeline in electroconvulsive therapy computational modeling.

BACKGROUND: Computational models of current flow during Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) rely on the quasi-static assumption, yet tissue impedance during ECT may be frequency specific and change adaptively to local electric field intensity. OBJECTIVES: We systematically consider the application of the quasi-static pipeline to ECT under conditions where 1) static impedance is measured before ECT and 2) during ECT when dynamic impedance is measured. We propose an update to ECT modeling accounting for frequency-dependent impedance. METHODS: The frequency content on an ECT device output is analyz

A thin film model for statics and dynamics of electro(de)wetting on soft and liquid dielectrics.

The contact line dynamics of sessile droplets on soft dielectrics under an electric field is crucial for applications in flexible electronics and point-of-care diagnostics. This study presents a reduced-order model based on lubrication theory to investigate the electrohydrodynamic spreading and retraction dynamics of a sessile droplet on a deformable dielectric under the pinned electrode configuration. The mechanical response of the soft dielectric is characterized using the Kelvin-Voigt model, while the influence of the electric field on the interfacial energy is incorporated based on the ele

Electrostatic Modulation of Antibiotic Susceptibility by the Bacterial Donnan Potential.

Antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacteria is a major global health threat, in part because of the permeability barriers of their double-membrane envelope and active efflux systems. While porins, lipopolysaccharides, and efflux pumps have been extensively studied, the role of membrane energetics, particularly the Donnan potential (DP), in antibiotic susceptibility remains poorly understood. The DP arises from negatively charged osmoregulated periplasmic glucans (OPGs), which generate an electrostatic potential in the periplasm that is capable of influencing how molecules traverse the oute

Intrinsic physicochemical activity at microplastic-water interfaces.

Plastics have become an integral part of our modern society, largely because they are generally regarded as chemically inert under normal circumstances. However, plastics fragmented into microplastics (less than 5 mm in size) have recently raised significant public concerns, and have been detected widely across ecosystems and human tissues with increasing environmental and health risks1-5. Here we show that commodity microplastics exhibit intrinsic physicochemical activity in water, manifested by the spontaneous generation of reactive oxygen species that increases with interfacial hydrophobici

The assembly pathway for human papillomavirus L1 capsid protein is encoded in electrostatic interactions.

Human papillomavirus L1 protein spontaneously folds and assembles into 60 nm virus-like particles (VLP), with T = 7d icosahedral symmetry at high salt concentrations but not in low salt. Rapid increase from low to high salt during the assembly process gives poor-quality VLPs, while slowly increasing salt, over as many as 48 h, gives rise to high-quality VLPs. Insight into this behavior is drawn from a computational model based on the cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of the human papillomavirus Type 16 VLP. Electrostatic potential energy barriers were calculated using the linea

Effects of Liposome Composition and Size on Protein Corona Formation: Competitive Replacement of Abundant Proteins by High-Affinity Proteins on the Liposome Surface.

Plasma proteins (human serum albumin, immunoglobulin gamma-1, complement C3, and fibrinogen) are simulated with 26 and 36 nm-sized cationic, anionic, and zwitterionic liposomes in water using coarse-grained models. Proteins, initially placed randomly around a liposome, adsorb more significantly onto charged liposomes than onto zwitterionic liposomes through electrostatic interactions with lipid headgroups and hydrophobic interactions with lipid tails, with the greatest adsorption observed on cationic liposomes, in agreement with experimental observations. For zwitterionic liposomes, adsorption

Balancing the extremes for antibody developability: hydrophobic and electrostatic germline framework signatures for CDR-loop compensation.

Antibody therapeutics are a rapidly growing class of biopharmaceuticals, but concerns regarding potential developability issues persist. While complementarity-determining region (CDR) loops are imperative for antigen specificity and mutations are challenging, the framework regions can be exchanged to align with developability attributes such as aggregation, clearance, and viscosity, all governed by physicochemical characteristics. In this study, we systematically analyze the electrostatic and hydrophobic surface properties of germline-encoded antibody frameworks to assess their role in modulat

Electrostatically Self-Assembled Microalgae Facial Masks for Dual-Functional Therapy: Anti-Infection and Healing Promotion.

Facial skin infections present clinical challenges due to limited anti-infective efficacy of commercial masks and rising antibiotic resistance. An innovative electrostatically self-assembled microalgae facial mask (MCSM) via a scalable chitosan (CS)-microalgae flocculation strategy is proposed. The rod-shaped morphology of Synechococcus elongatus provides extensive surface area for stable substrate immobilization and efficient loading of bioactive molecules, while its well-established photosynthetic capability enables sustained oxygen generation to counteract local hypoxia. A light-driven photodynamic antimicrobial and UV-barrier chitosan film doped with well-dispersed aloe emodin through electrostatic interactions for pork preservation.

Aloe emodin (AE) molecules tend to aggregate in aqueous film-forming solutions, which is not conducive to develop photodynamic antimicrobial films. In this work, the water-soluble chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS) was used to improve the dispersion of AE in chitosan film through electrostatic interaction to achieve a photodynamic antibacterial effect. The optimal tensile strength and elongation at break of the film reached 27.36 MPa and 76.40%, respectively. With rising AE content, the film exhibited enhanced UV-shielding performance. The film with 0.7% AE (CS-C-AE0.7 film) possessed th

Engineering stable and reusable biocatalysts through electrostatic immobilization of (S)-norcoclaurine synthase on mesostructured kaolin.

Immobilization of enzymes onto solid supports is a key strategy for enhancing their stability, reusability, and performance under harsh conditions, thereby enabling broader applications in sustainable catalysis. Here, we investigate the immobilization of (S)-Norcoclaurine Synthase ((S)-NCS), a highly promising yet scarcely studied biocatalyst capable of catalyzing the Pictet-Spengler reaction with high enantioselectivity for the synthesis of tetrahydroisoquinolines. We explored its immobilization onto low-cost mesoporous materials, Kaolin and Celite 545, characterized by distinct surface prope
