Dissociable effects of prefrontal and anterior temporal cortical lesions on stereotypical gender attitudes.

Clinical observations of patients with ventral frontal and anterior temporal cortical lesions reveal marked abnormalities in social attitudes. A previous study in seven patients with ventral prefrontal lesions provided the first direct experimental evidence for abnormalities in social attitudes using a well-established measure of gender stereotypes, the Implicit Association Test (IAT). Here, we were able to test whether these first findings could be reproduced in a larger sample of 154 patients with penetrating head injuries, and to determine the differential effects of ventromedial prefrontal

Repetitive and stereotyped behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorders in the second year of life.

This study examined repetitive and stereotyped behaviors (RSB) in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD, n = 50), developmental delays without ASD (DD; n = 25) and typical development (TD, n = 50) between 18 and 24 months of age. Children with ASD demonstrated significantly higher frequency and longer duration of RSB with objects, body, and sensory behaviors during a systematic behavior sample than both the DD and TD groups. RSB with objects were related to concurrent measures of symbolic capacity and social competence in the second year and predicted developmental outcomes as well as s

High-frequency stimulation of the anterior subthalamic nucleus reduces stereotyped behaviors in primates.

Growing evidence shows that dysfunction of the limbic basal ganglia (BG) network is implicated in repetitive behaviors, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette's syndrome (TS), in humans. Because deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the posterior subthalamic nucleus (STN), which modulates the sensorimotor BG network, is beneficial in movement disorders, stimulation of the anterior, limbic STN might improve intractable behavioral disorders. We therefore evaluated the effect of anterior STN stimulation on the repetitive behaviors induced in two monkeys after bicuculline-induced dysfu

Implicit gender-based food stereotypes. Semantic priming experiments on young Japanese.

We explored the feasibility of introducing implicit attitude measures for the study of food-related stereotypes by assessing gender-based food stereotypes among young Japanese using a semantic priming paradigm. Thirty-seven Japanese university students were asked to judge if a given forename was male or female immediately after the presentation of a food-name prime stimulus. The participants required significantly less time to verify the gender of forenames when the stereotyped gender of the food and the gender of forename were congruent than when they were incongruent. We demonstrate that a s

67 stereotypes of structural modification of the urothelium in various diseases of the urinary bladder and prostate.

Structural modification of the urothelium was studied in various diseases of the urinary bladder and prostate, including urinary bladder cancer, vibration cystopathy, chronic prostatitis, benign prostate hyperplasia, and chronic cystitis. The general phenomena of changes in urinary bladder epithelium were atrophy, squamous metaplasia, and instability of the urothelium (focal atrophy, dysplasia, hyperplasia, and metaplasia). This phenomenon can be interpreted as a morphological marker for cancer risk.

The 5-HT7 receptor influences stereotypic behavior in a model of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The 5-HT7 receptor has been suggested as a new putative target for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, especially depression. This hypothesis is based on the finding that antidepressant drugs have relatively high affinity for the 5-HT7 receptor, and that inactivation or blockade of the receptor leads to an antidepressant-like profile in behavioral models and sleep parameters. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is also believed to involve the serotonergic system and is treated using antidepressants, thus it is of interest to study the possible role of the 5-HT7 receptor in this disorder. We

Joint attention, language, social relating, and stereotypical behaviours in children with autistic disorder.

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between abilities to initiate and respond to joint attention and symptoms of autism that have, and have not, been theoretically linked to joint attention. Participants were 51 boys and five girls with autistic disorder, aged between 2 years and 6 years 5 months. Measures of joint attention behaviours, language, social relating, and stereotypical behaviour were administered during a single assessment. As predicted, the correlations between joint attention and the two behaviours theoretically linked to joint attention (i.e. social relating and la

The formation of trajectories during goal-oriented locomotion in humans. I. A stereotyped behaviour.

Human locomotion was investigated in a goal-oriented task where subjects had to walk to and through a doorway starting from a fixed position and orientation in space. The door was located at different positions and orientations in space, resulting in a total of 40 targets. While no specific constraint was provided to subjects in terms of the path they were to follow or the expected walking speeds, all of them generated very similar trajectories in terms of both path geometry and velocity profiles. These results are reminiscent of the stereotyped properties of the hand trajectories observed in

Framing discrimination: effects of inclusion versus exclusion mind-sets on stereotypic judgments.

Three studies investigated how inclusion versus exclusion strategies differentially lead to stereotypic decisions. In inclusion strategies, suitable targets are selected from a list of candidates, whereas in exclusion strategies, unsuitable candidates are eliminated. Across 2 separate target domains (Study 1: male and female politicians; Studies 2 and 3: African American and European American basketball players), exclusion strategies, as compared with inclusion strategies, elicited higher levels of both sensitivity stereotyping (i.e., greater difficulty distinguishing among members of stereoty…

Social withdrawal, neophobia, and stereotyped behavior in developing rats exposed to neonatal asphyxia.

Perinatal asphyxia is a concern for public health and may promote subtle neuropsychiatric disorders. Anoxic insults to neonatal rats cause long-lasting neurobehavioral deficits. In the present study, we focussed on changes in emotional behaviors as a consequence of neonatal asphyxia in Wistar rats. Newborn pups (24 h after birth) underwent a single 30-min exposure to a 100% N2 atmosphere (or air). The offspring was tested for a) locomotor and exploratory activity with or without a d-amphetamine challenge (0, 1, or 2 mg/kg) on postnatal day (pnd) 15; b) social interactions and novelty seeking d

A new case of CDG-x with stereotyped dystonic hand movements and optic atrophy.

We report the clinical findings and the diagnostic work-up of a 17-month-old girl with CDG-x. Predominant clinical signs were, besides psychomotor retardation and truncal hypotonia, stereotyped dystonic hand movements and ophthalmological abnormalities such as optic atrophy, nystagmus and strabismus. Other symptoms that are often found in patients with CDG were not present, such as seizures, microcephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, dysmorphic features, hepatointestinal disease, coagulopathy or multiorgan involvement. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) of the patient's serum showed a marked elevation of di

Directed coherence of EEG on ICSS rats with methamphetamine-induced hyperactivity and stereotyped behavior.

Methamphetamine (MAP) can reinforce intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) in rats, that is, reward-seeking behavior. However, the ICSS can be inhibited by the stereotyped behavior induced by MAP. This study was designed to observe the mutual information flow between prefrontal cortex (PFC) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) using directed coherence (DC) analysis during the hyperactivity and stereotyped behavior induced by administration of MAP (a derivative of amphetamine). The DC from PFC to VTA increased at 5-7 Hz in the hyperactivity as compared to the stereotypy. In contrast, enhanced informa

Estrous cycle differences in cocaine-induced stereotypic and locomotor behaviors in Fischer rats.

This study was conducted to characterize female behavioral response to acute 'binge' pattern cocaine administration (15 mg kg(-1) i.p., three times a day, at 1 h intervals) during the different stages of the estrous cycle in Fischer rats. Cocaine administration significantly increased stereotypic behavior and locomotion in females. Animals in estrus showed significantly higher cocaine-induced stereotypic and locomotive behavioral responses than those in other stages of the cycle. Plasma levels of the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine during metestrus diestrus were significantly higher than du

Dextrorotatory opioids induce stereotyped behavior in Sprague-Dawley and Dark Agouti rats.

Dextromethorphan and dextrorphan elicited a stereotyped behavioral syndrome in rats indistinguishable from that produced by PCP and other non-competitive NMDA antagonists. The rank order of potency for the induction of stereotyped behavior in male Sprague-Dawley rats was: MK-801>PCP>(+/-)cyclazocine>dextrorphan>(+/-)ketamine>dextromethorphan. These behavioral potencies were significantly correlated (0.91; P<0.05) with their respective affinities for high affinity [3H]dextrorphan-labelled NMDA receptors in rat forebrain membranes. To address the propensity of dextromethorphan to induce stereoty

[Parkinsonian syndrome and post-encephalitic stereotyped involuntary movements responsive to L-dopa].

In 1954, when he was five years old, a patient suffered from encephalitis with a prolonged lethargic state. Following this episode, he presented a severe parkinsonian syndrome which was associated, after a few years, with an axial dystonia and stereotyped involuntary movements of the upper limbs. These abnormal movements were particular by their coordinated appearance, their rhythmicity and their relative slowness. Treatment with L-dopa suppressed all akinetic, dystonic and dyskinetic symptoms. At age of 40 years, all the akinetic, dystonic and dyskinetic symptoms reappeared after drug withdra

Intra-individual factors influencing efficacy of interventions for stereotyped behaviours: a meta-analysis.

The efficacy of treatments targeting stereotyped behaviours has been the focal point of several reviews. This study examined efficacy as a function of intra-individual characteristics, including age, gender, level of disability and topography of the behaviour. A meta-analysis of studies reporting treatments of stereotyped behaviours appearing in 23 journals over 20 years was conducted. Efficacy was determined using two metrics, Percentage Non-overlapping Data and Percentage Zero Data, which indicate treatment success as a function of the degree to which the behaviour fell below baseline levels

Autosomal and Y chromosomal effects on the stereotyped response to apomorphine in wild house mice.

The behavioral response to apomorphine, a dopamine agonist, was shown to be different between a selection line characterized by Short Attack Latencies (SAL) and a selection line having Long Attack Latencies (LAL) (4). Aggressive SAL mice were more sensitive to apomorphine than nonaggressive LAL males. The aim of this research was to determine whether the stereotyped response to apomorphine is affected by the Y chromosome in the same way as it influences attack latency. For this purpose, F1 reciprocal hybrids as well as congenic lines (SAL.LY and LAL.SY) were used. The major difference between
