Histologic assessment of ligament vascularity and synovitis in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between histologic degeneration of cranial cruciate ligaments (CCLs) and severity of synovitis and ligament vascularity. SAMPLE: CCL and synovium from 59 stifle joints (53 dogs). PROCEDURES: CCL and synovium specimens were obtained from stifle joints of juvenile (15 joints; 12 dogs) and adult (25 joints; 22 dogs) dogs with intact CCLs and dogs with CCL rupture (rCCL; 19 joints; 19 dogs). Vascular density and degenerative changes of the CCL core region and severity of synovitis were semiquantitatively evaluated. Relationships were analyzed by use of a ran…

Needle arthroscopy enables safe and effective meniscal treatment in medium-sized dogs, with superior visibility compared to standard arthroscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of performing meniscal transection and shaver debridement (MTSD) with a 1.9-mm needle arthroscope (needle arthroscopy [NA]) in medium-sized (7- to 15-kg) dogs, and to compare meniscal visibility, procedural difficulty, and iatrogenic articular cartilage injury (IACI) with a standard 2.7-mm arthroscope (standard arthroscopy [SA]). METHODS: The study was conducted between May 1 and July 31, 2024. Paired pelvic limbs from 24 medium-sized canine cadavers were alternately assigned to 1 of 2 operators. Within each pair, stifles were then randomly assigned to N…

Outcome of surgical correction of medial patellar luxation in dogs weighing less than 10 kg.

BACKGROUND: Various trochleoplasty techniques, including trochlear wedge recession (TWR) and trochlear block recession (TBR), are used to tr … eaction force (GRF) analysis and canine brief pain inventory (CBPI). RESULTS: Overall, 20 dogs (26 stifles) were followed up in the long term. Minor postoperative complications, medial patellar reluxation (MPR) and intermittent lameness occurred in 46.15%, 19.23% and 15% of the dogs, respectively. MPR occurred only in TWR-treated stifles, while mean OAS …

Results and complications after removal of tibial tuberosity advancement cage for treatment of surgical site infections: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical technique and report the short-term results after removal of tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) cages in dogs with surgical site infections (SSI). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. ANIMALS: Seventeen client-owned dogs. METHODS: Medical records of dogs treated for SSI by removal of a TTA cage between November 2012 and May 2015 were reviewed. Osteochondritis dissecans-like lesion of the intercondylar fossa of the femur in a dog.

An 11-month-old neutered female crossbreed dog was admitted with left pelvic limb lameness. Radiographs and computed tomography identified an osteochondritis dissecans- (OCD) like lesion in the intercondylar fossa of the femur originating from the axial aspect of the medial femoral condyle. Stifle arthrotomy was performed in order to remove the bony fragment. It was concluded that the clinical features and location of this lesion indicate an osteochondritis dessicans-like lesion. Fragment removal was associated with an excellent outcome.

Use of a permanent magnetic field to inhibit the development of canine osteoarthritis.

This study was designed to determine the potential of a permanent magnetic field to inhibit the progression of osteoarthritis (OA) in a canine model. The magnetic field was created by 72 domino-sized ceramic magnets with surface field strength of 1100 G (0.11 T). The magnetic field strength at the surface of the mattress was 450-500 G (45-50 mT) and was equally distributed over the mattress surface. Eighteen animals had closed resection of their right stifle anterior cruciate ligament. Their kennel floors were covered in one of three ways: no floor mattress (OA) (N = 6); a floor mattress with …

Racing performance in 75 Thoroughbreds after arthroscopic removal of Osteochondritis dissecans from the lateral femoral trochlear ridge before first race start in Korea (2015-2017).

The lateral trochlear ridge of the stifle joint is highly susceptible to developing Osteochondrosis (OC)/Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions. This retrospective study evaluated the medical and racing outcomes of 75 Thoroughbreds who underwent arthroscopic OCD removal at the Jeju Stud Farm Equine Hospital from 2015 to 2017. The analysis included medical records, radiographic assessments, and race performance data, comparing 75 horses that underwent surgery with 257 control horses selected as siblings from the same dam. The surgical group had comparable racehorse registration rates (89.3 %) …

Epoxy-Pin External Skeletal Fixation for Management of Open Bone Fractures in Calves and Foals: A Review of 32 Cases.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate epoxy-pin external skeletal fixation technique for the treatment of open fractures in calves and foals. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-eight calves and four foals (weighing 45-105 kg) with fractures distal to the stifle or elbow made the subject for the retrospective study. The pins (2.0-3.0-mm Kirschner wires, crossed at 60-90°) were fixed at least at two locations in both proximal and distal bone fragments as per the case situation. The pins in the same plane were bent (∼2 cm from the skin) towards the fracture site or joint and were joined using an ad…

Establishment of a sedation threshold score for orthopedic radiographs in dogs and evaluation of inter-rater reliability and accuracy of video-based assessment.

BACKGROUND: Sedation scales are commonly used to assess sedation levels in dogs, but no threshold scores exist to guide decisions on the nee … ithout restraint. Two thresholds were calculated: 1 for all radiograph types and 1 specifically for stifle radiographs. Discrimination between adequately and inadequately sedated dogs was evaluated via the area under the curve (AUC). Inter-rater reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient, and agreement between scoring methods w …

Strain Elastography and B-Mode Ultrasound of the Quadriceps Femoral Muscle and the Femoro-Tibio-Patellar Joint of Healthy Dogs and Dogs with Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture.

OBJECTIVE: This study analysed alterations in the stifle and quadriceps femoris muscle of healthy dogs and dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture using ultrasound and strain elastography. METHODS: B-mode ultrasound was performed bilaterally in the stifle and quadriceps femoris muscle of the animals from both groups, healthy animals (HA, n = 16) and diseased animals (DA, n = 10), using strain elastography with strain ratio measurement. RESULTS: The strain ratio means between infrapatellar fat pad/patellar ligament were 0.92 ± 0.29 in the right pelvic limbs and 1.1 ± 0.51 in the left pelv…

Adipocytes in synovial fluid cytology: An approach for diagnosing synovial lipomatosis.

A 2-year-old neutered male bullmastiff dog was presented with chronic left hind limb lameness. Physical examination revealed left stifle effusion and medial buttress without cranial tibial thrust. Radiographs showed joint effusion and new bone formation at the patella apex. Magnetic resonance imaging showed increased synovial fluid, widening of the joint space, abnormal infrapatellar fat body and thinning of the cranial cruciate ligament. Synoviocentesis and cytologic evaluation of synovial fluid revealed marked mononuclear inflammation with abundant fatty tissue, suggesting synovial lipomatos…
