The effect of amphetamine on locomotion depends on the motor device utilized. The open field vs. the running wheel.

The effect of amphetamine on the level of locomotion exhibited on two different motor devices was examined in the Golden hamster. Increasing concentrations of the psychostimulant from 4 to 10 mg/kg significantly enhanced locomotor activity in hamsters exposed to an open field. A further increase to 25 mg/kg inhibited ambulatory activity to levels below the control baseline, while augmenting the occurrence of stereotypic behaviors. The activating effect of amphetamine on ambulatory activity was observed regardless of the time of testing (day or night) or lighting condition, with no apparent mod

Ion transport in human cecum, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon in vitro. Baseline and response to electrical stimulation of intrinsic nerves.

In a flux chamber study of ion transport in human colon, we compared baseline rates with those measured during electrical stimulation of intrinsic nerves. In baseline studies, sodium was absorbed throughout, but maximally in transverse colon. In cecum, sodium absorption accounted for the short circuit current and chloride was not absorbed. Chloride was absorbed in transverse and sigmoid colon, however. Residual current was minimal in cecum and transverse colon, but increased in sigmoid colon. Neural stimulation caused chloride secretion in cecum, reduced chloride absorption in sigmoid colon, b

Effects of sodium pentobarbital upon cardiovascular responses to mesencephalic reticular stimulation in rats.

In nineteen rats the cardiovascular responses to the electrical stimulation of the lateral mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) were recorded before, during and after different doses of sodium pentobarbital injected intravenously. Before pentobarbital, stimulation of the MRF induced cardiovascular changes in 100% of cases. The following four patterns were observed: a) hypertension plus bradycardia (N = 11; 57.9%); b) hypertension without chronotropic effects (N = 4; 21%); c) hypertension plus tachycardia (N = 3; 15.8%), and d) hypotension without chronotropic effects (N = 1;5.3%). Signaling Interaction between Facial and Meningeal Inputs of the Trigeminal System Mediates Peripheral Neurostimulation Analgesia in a Rat Model of Migraine.

Peripheral neurostimulation within the trigeminal nerve territory has been used for pain alleviation during migraine attacks, but the mechanistic basis of this non-invasive intervention is still poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic role of peripheral stimulation of the trigeminal nerve, which provides homosegmental innervation to intracranial structures, by assessing analgesic effects in a nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced rat model of migraine. As a result of neurogenic inflammatory responses in the trigeminal nervous system, plasma protein extravasation was induced in

Skeletal muscle ECF pH error signal for exercise ventilatory control.

An autonomic reflex linking exercising skeletal muscle metabolism to central ventilatory control is thought to be mediated by neural afferents having free endings that terminate in the interstitial fluid of muscle. To determine whether changes in muscle extracellular fluid pH (pHe) can provide an error signal for exercise ventilatory control, pHe was measured during electrically induced contraction by 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy and the chemical shift of a phosphorylated, pH-sensitive marker that distributes to the extracellular fluid (phenylphosphonic acid). Seven lightly anesthetized

Stimulation and characteristics of secondary oesophageal peristalsis in normal subjects.

The study evaluates the triggering and characteristics of secondary oesophageal peristalsis in 25 healthy volunteers. Secondary peristalsis was stimulated by rapid intraoesophageal injection of boluses of air and water, and by a five second oesophageal distension with a balloon. Air and water boluses triggered secondary peristalsis that started in the proximal oesophagus regardless of injection site. Response rates were volume dependent with 83% of the 20 ml air boluses triggering secondary peristalsis compared with 2% for the 2 ml water bolus (p < 0.0001). Response rates for air and water wer

[The stimulation of superoxide formation by human neutrophils under the action of blood serum from echinococcosis patients].

The effect of blood serum of patients with liver echinococcosis on the superoxide production by neutrophils of donors was studied. The patients observed were distributed to 2 groups: 1) those with uncomplicated disease and 2) those with festered cyst. Blood serum of patients with echinococcosis was proved to stimulate superoxide production by donor neutrophils by 107-483% in comparison with donor's serum. The serum from patients with festered cyst was shown to have no pronounced effect on superoxide production but a day after echinococcectomy the maximal stimulation was observed, which was 12.

Adult respiratory distress syndrome complicating ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

A rare case of OHSS complicated by an ARDS from which the patient recovered after appropriate treatment is presented. Pulmonary capillary leakage induced by prostaglandin release, hypoalbuminemia, and shift of dextran 40 macromolecules to the intraalveolar space is considered the most probable reason for this complication.

Arousal responses to chemical stimuli during sleep.

Arousal from sleep is an important component of any co-ordinated response to an external stimulus. Respiratory stimuli imposed during sleep are capable of eliciting arousal responses as well as the classic ventilatory responses Considerable survival advantage may result as a consequence of intact arousal mechanisms. Developmental studies of arousal responses to respiratory stimuli are lacking. Arousal responses to chemoreceptor stimuli have been examined in adult tracheotomized dogs, both before and following bilateral surgical denervation of the carotid bodies. Prior to denervation of the car

[Gonadotropin secretion after stimulation with a highly effective analog of the gonadotropin-releasing-hormone (GnRH) in normal adult human males (author's transl)].

Potent long acting anologs of GnRH are of great interest especially in view of treatment of hypothalamic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and of cryptorchidism. To find necessary parenteral doses of such a substance immunoreactive serum LH and FSH were measured in 4 normal adult human males after s.c. injection of various doses of D-Leu6-des-Gly10-GnRH-EA. 5 microgram of the GnRH anlog were necessary to obtain increased serum gonadotropins over a period of at least 8 h. Comparable maximal levels were seen after i.v. bolus injection of 25 microgram natural GnRH a dose as used in diagnostic routine

Effect of asbestos on lipid peroxidation in the red cells.

In vitro exposure of red cells to vie International Union against Cancer (UICC) standard reference asbestos samples resulted in an increase of thiobarbituric acid substances. Chrysotiles developed the largest amounts of lipid peroxides, followed by anthophyllite, amosite, and crocidolite in decreasing order. Compared with the control samples erythrocytes free of dusts, all types of the asbestos examined disclosed significant differences. The results obtained provide support for the cytotoxic potential of amosite and crocidolite and, on the other hand, suggest that a lipid peroxidation of unsat

Increased sulfobromophthalein clearance in a patient receiving phenobarbital and other anticonvulsant drugs.

A marked increase in bromosulfophthalein, dibromosulfophthalein, and indocyanine green fractional clearance was found in a patient who had received phenobarbital for 30 years and other anticonvulsant agents for 6 years. This was related to a marked increase in hepatic blood flow, while hepatic extraction remained normal. These changes were associated with signs of hepatic microsomal enzyme induction (in particular a 2-fold increase in liver bilirubin UDP-glucuronyltransferase activity and hypertrophy of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the hepatocytes). Drug administration (especially pheno

Elevated exposure to environmental chemicals among individuals with substance use disorder.

Biomonitoring of environmental chemical exposures among individuals with substance use disorder is scarce, although they may experience a distinct spectrum of exposures compared to the general population. We measured 121 environmental chemicals including bactericides, benzophenones, bisphenols, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, organophosphate esters, parabens, phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the urine of 200 overdose patients (presenting at emergency department in hospitals) from New York State, USA. Forty-eight analytes were detected in over 70 % of the urine samples,
