Psychotrauma and effective treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder in soldiers and peacekeepers.

Psychotrauma occurs as a result to a traumatic event, which may involve witnessing someone's actual death or personally experiencing serious physical injury, assault, rape and sexual abuse, being held as a hostage, or a threat to physical or psychological integrity. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder and was defined in the past as railway spine, traumatic war neurosis, stress syndrome, shell shock, battle fatigue, combat fatigue, or post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS). If untreated, post-traumatic stress disorder can impair relationships of those affected and strain

Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder among homeless adults in Sydney.

OBJECTIVE: International studies indicate high prevalence rates of post-traumatic stress disorder within homeless populations. In Australia, studies indicate high rates of trauma among homeless adults, yet post-traumatic stress disorder has not been investigated in homeless Australian adults. The primary aim of this project was to determine the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among homeless adults in Sydney. Further, another aim of the study was to determine whether the onset of post-traumatic stress disorder preceded the first episode of homelessness or was a consequence of homel

Adult post-traumatic stress disorder: screening and treating in primary care.

Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affect patients' physical health and daily functioning. Primary care physicians should remember to screen for trauma history and symptoms of PTSD when patients present with somatization, chronic pain, or other unexplained symptoms. Perceived loss of control, including physical examinations and procedures, may be frightening, and physicians should ask the patient's permission before touching them. Patients who have PTSD benefit from treatment, including both psychopharmacology (primarily selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and psychotherapy.

Post-traumatic stress disorder-related symptoms after intensive care.

AIM: To determine the incidence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) related symptoms in a population of intensive care unit (ICU) admitted patients and the relationship between PTSD-related symptoms and memories of ICU. METHODS: Adults consecutively admitted to an ICU of a University hospital during 1 year, who stayed in the ICU at least 3 days, were prospectively studied. A questionnaire (ICU memory tool) was administered to 84 patients 1 week after ICU discharge and to 63 of them after 3 months. Past medical history and clinical variables present during ICU stay were collected. RESULT

Is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder a helpful concept for adults with intellectual disability?

BACKGROUND: Research using the concept of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with adults with intellectual disability (ID)assumes they perceive and react to traumatic events in a similar way to non-disabled adults. Reactions to trauma displayed by children may be relevant to adults with ID as well. METHODS: Two focus groups were held with professionals and practitioners to explore the relevance of criteria from child as well as adult literature to adults with ID who experience trauma. Descriptive thematic analysis was carried out. RESULTS: Abuse, parental bereavement, and having children

General practitioners' knowledge of post-traumatic stress disorder: a controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common, is associated with substantial morbidity, and is often not recognised in primary care. AIM: To explore whether general practitioners (GPs) have significant gaps in their knowledge of PTSD. DESIGN OF STUDY: A controlled study. SETTING: Primary care in two Scottish regions. METHOD: A validated postal questionnaire consisting of clinical vignettes for PTSD, acute stress reaction, and depression was used to gather the data. The primary outcome measures were the proportion describing 'best practice' management of PTSD and the comparis

Predictive factors of chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in rape victims.

This study aimed to investigate the psychological disorders following rape as well as the course of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and to determine clinical factors predictive of chronic PTSD. Seventy-three rape victims were observed in a systematic follow-up study over 1 year following rape using structured interview schedules. The frequency of PTSD was massive. The early disorders predicting PTSD 1 year after rape included somatoform and dissociative disorders, agoraphobia and specific phobias as well as depressive and gender identity disorders and alcohol abuse. Through stepwise log

Post-traumatic stress disorder in victims of civilian trauma and criminal violence.

Many individuals in the community suffer from PTSD and other stress reactions. Physicians, however, tend to diagnose post-traumatic symptoms as anxiety or depressive disorders rather than PTSD. Contacting and engaging patients after a disaster can be quite difficult. The chronic PTSD patient has been described as elusive and difficult to detect within the health care system. In one study, the time interval from trauma to psychiatric consultation was well over 3 years. A history of PTSD is often obscured by comorbid disorders or adjustment difficulties, such as depression, aggressive behavior,

Clinical detection, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.

This article has reviewed the detection, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis of PTSD. Recognition of particular effects of traumatic stress on patients' communications and adjustments in interviewing technique facilitate the expression and detection of PTSD when it is present. The phenomenologic boundaries between PTSD and a number of clinical syndromes and disorders are explored in detail. Delineation of PTSD from other disorders even when they co-occur with PTSD is almost always possible with effective rapport and knowledge from clinical research. An understanding of the role of traumatic

Undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder following motor vehicle accidents.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the pattern of emergence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among motor vehicle accident victims and to examine the influence of PTSD on subsequent levels of disability. DESIGN: A longitudinal study of motor vehicle accident victims one month and 18 months after the accident. SUBJECTS: Twenty-four motor vehicle accident victims admitted by the trauma team at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. A 52% response rate was achieved. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Post-traumatic stress disorder as diagnosed by the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and disability as measured with the Si

Implicit and explicit memory bias for threat in post-traumatic stress disorder.

We investigated explicit (cued recall) and implicit (word completion) memory in Vietnam combat veterans with (n = 24) and without (n = 24) post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Half of the subjects in each group encoded combat, social threat, positive, and neutral words elaboratively, whereas the others encoded these words nonelaboratively. On the cued recall test, under both encoding conditions, both groups recalled more combat words than other words. However, difference scores obtained by subtracting the mean recall for neutral words from the mean recall scores for the other words revealed

Hidden posttraumatic stress disorder in the mother of a boy with traumatic limb amputation.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is usually diagnosed in the primary victim of a psychologically distressing event who demonstrates the criteria symptomatology. Presented here is a case study of PTSD symptoms in a mother whose 4-year-old boy underwent bilateral arm amputation. Discussed is how the mother became the primary PTSD victim and why the particular injury (electrical shock) can be explained as readily giving rise to her problems. Consultants to pediatric and trauma services are reminded that the primary patient's medical care may suffer if disorders such as PTSD are not recognized

Sustained urinary norepinephrine and epinephrine elevation in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Urinary norepinephrine and epinephrine levels (microgram/day) were measured at two-week intervals during the course of hospitalization in the following patient groups: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); major depressive disorder (MDD); bipolar I, manic (BP); paranoid schizophrenia (PS); and undifferentiated schizophrenia (US). The mean norepinephrine level during hospitalization was significantly higher in PTSD (76 +/- 10.4 micrograms/day) than in BP (60.6 +/- 8.4 micrograms/day), MDD (41.2 +/- 4.7 micrograms/day), PS (33.4 +/- 4.9 micrograms/day) and US (34.3 +/- 5.9 micrograms/day) group

EEG Neurofeedback for Anxiety Disorders and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders: A Blueprint for a Promising Brain-Based Therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review provides an overview of current knowledge and understanding of EEG neurofeedback for anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: The manifestations of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) are associated with dysfunctions of neurophysiological stress axes and brain arousal circuits, which are important dimensions of the research domain criteria (RDoC). Even if the pathophysiology of these disorders is complex, one of its defining signatures is behavioral and physiological over-arousal. Interestingly, arousal-rel

Cross-sectional field study comparing hippocampal subfields in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder with comorbid major depressive disorder, and adjustment disorder using routine clinical data.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus is a central brain structure involved in stress processing. Previous studies have linked stress-related mental disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), with changes in hippocampus volume. As PTSD and MDD have similar symptoms, clinical diagnosis relies solely on patients reporting their cognitive and emotional experiences, leading to an interest in utilizing imaging-based data to improve accuracy. Our field study aimed to determine whether there are hippocampal subfield volume differences between stress-related me

Occupational stigma and post-traumatic stress disorder among healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) could be subject to stigma, particularly in contexts of fear of contagion related to various communicable diseases. While existing literature has established links between workplace stigma and adverse mental health outcomes, this research has largely focused on stigma derived from personal characteristics (e.g., race, gender). However, studies specifically investigating occupational stigma - the stigma resulting directly from the nature of the healthcare profession itself - remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association between perceived occupa

Psychotherapy for complex post-traumatic stress disorder: efficacy and therapeutic factors.

The treatment of patients with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) presents significant challenges due to the complexity and severity of the condition. Individuals who have experienced prolonged trauma exhibit, alongside post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, disturbances in self-organization (DSO). This state of affairs not only complicates the psychotherapeutic process but also impacts the outcomes, making the treatment challenging. This article provides a narrative review of treatment approaches for CPTSD [including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive-behavioral thera

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Atherosclerosis: Co-Phenomena, or Cause-and-Effect?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a trauma- and stressor-triggered psychiatric condition affecting approximately 10 million Americans, is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis and its devastating sequelae including ischemic heart disease, stroke and hypertension. PTSD and atherosclerosis share many pathogenic mechanisms impacting the limbic system, prefrontal cortex and systemic vasculature, including hyperactivation of the sympathetic and renin-angiotensin systems, inflammation, dysregulated coagulation and altered cortisol secretion. Whether PTSD is a direct cause o

New-onset autoimmunity in people living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Prior observational studies suggested an association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and autoimmune disorders; however, a comprehensive evaluation of this relationship remains limited. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, using the TriNetX global network, individuals newly diagnosed with chronic PTSD without autoimmune disease at baseline were propensity-score-matched to individuals without PTSD (2005-2025). Matching included age, sex, race, ethnicity, obesity, smoking, and psychiatric comorbidities variables. Cox models estimated the risk of 32 new-onset aut
