STRONGYLOIDIASIS IN PINE BARRENS TREEFROGS (HYLA ANDERSONII).

Over a period of 4 mo, an entire collection of seven Pine Barrens treefrogs (Hyla andersonii) died or were euthanized after developing pallor, generalized edema, and coelomic effusion. Necropsy revealed large numbers of strongyloidid nematodes within the small intestines associated with a moderate mucosal hyperplasia. Strongyloides sp. parasitic females, representing a novel species, were isolated from the fixed intestinal tract. This case report represents the first full description of strongyloidiasis in a tree frog army and highlights the potential of Strongyloides spp. as a cause of rapid

Pulmonary strongyloidiasis--case report of 2 cases.

Strongyloidiasis is a benign gastrointestinal infection. It can pass through the lungs and induce pulmonary strongyloidiasis. The suspicion of pulmonary involvement begins with clinical and chest radiographic features in the patients at risk. They are as follows: chronic lung diseases, age was 65 years, altered cellular immunity, and use of corticosteroids. Definitive diagnosis is made by identification of strongyloides in the secretion or tissue of the respiratory tract. We present 2 patients with pulmonary strongyloidiasis in this research. These 2 cases were patients with chronic obstructiv

Intestinal strongyloidiasis manifesting as eosinophilic pleural effusion.

Strongyloidiasis caused by the helminth Strongyloides stercoralis is usually asymptomatic or causes mild dermatologic or gastrointestinal symptoms. In immunocompromised hosts, hyperinfection and dissemination can occur. In this case, I describe a nonimmunocompromised Southeast Asian man who had an eosinophilic pleural effusion, peripheral eosinophilia, and rhabditiform larvae of S stercoralis in the stools. There was complete resolution of the pleural effusion after thiabendazole therapy, thus suggesting strongyloidiasis as the cause of the effusion. Helminthic infections like strongyloidiasis

[Fatal hyperinfectious strongyloidiasis: report of 3 cases].

The present paper reports three fatal cases of massive strongyloidiasis. Case 1. A 37-year-old woman with a record of arthropathy and corticosteroids treatment, died in shock. The postmortem examination showed massive intestinal strongyloidiasis with larvae dissemination to lungs, liver, spleen and the adipose tissue located around adrenal glands. Case 2. A 12-year-old, malnourished girl died of peritonitis. The autopsy findings were lithiasis and perforation of jejunum, hyperinfectious strongyloidiasis of intestines and lungs, acute and chronic peritonitis. Case 3. A 7-year-old, cachectic gir

Disseminated strongyloidiasis: report of two fatal cases.

Strongyloides infection is usually asymptomatic but disseminated infection is a cause of morbidity and mortality in immunodeficient patients. Two fatal cases of strongyloidiasis are reported here, with rare manifestations of gastric ulcers with hematemesis and acute renal failure respectively.

Fatal strongyloidiasis in Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand.

Four cases of fatal strongyloidiasis were reported from Thailand; two were malnourished young inmates from the same Government-Institution while two were adults receiving corticosteroid therapy for pemphigus vulgaris and systemic lupus erythematosus. The clinical and pathological findings of all cases were briefly described. Special emphasis is made in treatment of malnourished young children especially those living in the institution with possibility of such parasitic hyperinfection superimposed by other organisms. A single course of thiabendazole in strongyloidiasis is inadequate, especially

Subconjunctival corticosteroid therapy complicated by hyperinfective strongyloidiasis.

A 57-year-old man was treated for a corneal ulcer with a penetrating keratoplasty, followed by six weeks of a regimen of 4 to 8 mg of dexamethasone injected subconjunctivally daily. Before therapy, he was clinically well and 10% eosinophils were noted on his differential white blood cell count. He developed a gastric peptic ulcer with hemorrhage and severe strongyloidiasis of the stomach and duodenum that worsened as the ulcer responded to medical therapy. The strongyloidiasis resulted in physiologic gastric outlet obstruction by decreasing gastrointestinal motility. There was evidence of hype

Strongyloidiasis in a Patient with Colonic Pseudopolyps and Intermittent Eosinophilia.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasitic infection which is endemic to the subtropics but uncommon in the northeastern United States. Strongyloides is unique in that it can remain latent in asymptomatic carriers for years. The gastrointestinal findings of Strongyloides infection can vary and are not well studied. In some cases, Strongyloides can present with polyp formation and colonic ulceration leading clinicians to suspect malignancy or Inflammatory Bowel Disease. However, corticosteroid administration is contraindicated due to risk of disseminated Stronglyoides infection which has a report

NIE Antigen Mapping for Serological Diagnostic of Strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease for which scalable serological diagnostics are essential to support control programmes. The Strongyloides stercoralis NIE antigen is widely used for antibody detection, but its antigenic determinants remain incompletely defined. Here, we performed epitope mapping of the NIE antigen using a panel of 23 overlapping 15-mer peptides and 4 bioinformatically predicted peptides. Immunoreactivity was evaluated by detecting IgG assay in sera from infected and noninfected individuals. Full-length NIE showed excellent diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.934),

Toxocariasis and Strongyloidiasis as Triggering Factors for Wells' Syndrome.

Wells' syndrome is a rare inflammatory skin disease characterized by pruritic erythematous lesions and cutaneous edema, often accompanied by eosinophilia. Parasitic infestations, such as toxocariasis and strongyloidiasis, can serve as triggers. However, Wells' syndrome associated with toxocariasis and strongyloidiasis has not been reported previously in Indonesia. Herein, we present a case of a 27-year-old male with a chief complaint of recurrent, pruritic, and painful erythematous rash on the right lower leg for 6 months, accompanied by fever and diarrhea. Physical examination showed cutaneou

Strongyloidiasis Mimicking Carcinoid Syndrome in an Immunocompetent Host.

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic infection caused by Strongyloides stercoralis which commonly presents as an asymptomatic infection in immunocompetent patients but may cause non-specific gastrointestinal and pulmonary complaints. Here, we report the atypical presentation of strongyloidiasis in a 72-year-old Vietnamese male with shortness of breath and flushing. This case is notable for the unique presentation of cutaneous flushing, the absence of eosinophilia, and negligible microscopic findings on stool examination. Despite insignificant laboratory findings, clinicians should consider strongyl

Ivermectin and albendazole coadministration: opportunities for strongyloidiasis control.

In 2020, WHO recognised the importance of strongyloidiasis alongside soil-transmitted helminths (STH) in their 2021-30 roadmap, which aspires to target Strongyloides stercoralis with preventive chemotherapy by use of ivermectin. Combination treatment with both albendazole, the primary drug used to treat STH, and ivermectin, would improve the efficiency of mass drug administration targeting both STH and S stercoralis. In this Personal View, we discuss the challenges and opportunities towards the development of an efficient control programme for strongyloidiasis, particularly if it is to run con

Is strongyloidiasis currently autochthonous in Croatia? A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Autochthonous human infections with Strongyloides stercoralis have been well documented in many European regions. By exploring patients' data, we aimed to find elements for its current endemicity in Croatia. METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study analysed epidemiological and clinical data of patients treated for strongyloidiasis from January 2010 to May 2019 at a teaching hospital in Zagreb, Croatia. The diagnosis was made by direct methods using light microscopy and/or serology. RESULTS: Among 65 patients with strongyloidiasis, 60% were men, and 78.5% were 50-79 y of age.

Lateral Flow Dipstick Test for Serodiagnosis of Strongyloidiasis.

The conventional method of detecting Strongyloides stercoralis in fecal samples has poor diagnostic sensitivity. Detection of Strongyloides-specific antibodies increases the sensitivity; however, most tests are ELISAs that use parasite extract which may cross-react with the sera of other helminth infections. To improve the serological diagnosis of strongyloidiasis, this study aimed at developing a sensitive and specific lateral flow rapid dipstick test. Two recombinant proteins, recombinant NIE (rNIE) and recombinant Ss1a (rSs1a), were used in preparing the dipstick, with gold-conjugated antih
