Electron-enriched metastable Fe2+ sites with enhanced sulfur resistance for catalytic methanethiol (CH3SH) decomposition.

The catalytic decomposition of methanethiol (CH3SH) over metal oxide catalysts faces an inherent challenge that high-valent metal oxides (e.g., Fe3+) typically enhance reactivity, while they also exhibit severe sulfur susceptibility, leading to rapid deactivation. Here, a silanol nests-mediated nanoconfinement strategy is developed to simultaneously tune the electronic state and surface acidity of iron (Fe) based catalysts, affording Fe/deAlMCM. Fe/deAlMCM maintains stable operation for more than 3000 min while exhibiting CH3SH conversion comparable to that of a conventional high-valent Fe3+ c

Emissions of sulfur trioxide from coal-fired power plants.

Emissions of sulfur trioxide (SO3) are a key component of plume opacity and acid deposition. Consequently, these emissions need to be low enough to not cause opacity violations and acid deposition. Generally, a small fraction of sulfur (S) in coal is converted to SO3 in coal-fired combustion devices such as electric utility boilers. The emissions of SO3 from such a boiler depend on coal S content, combustion conditions, flue gas characteristics, and air pollution devices being used. It is well known that the catalyst used in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology for nitrogen oxide

Plasma cysteine concentrations in infants with respiratory distress.

Because factors that predispose infants to persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) may cause oxidant stress, which in turn may increase demands for cysteine and glutathione, we investigated the availability of cysteine and its precursors in PPHN and related disorders. Plasma concentrations of four sulfur-containing and two non-sulfur-containing amino acids were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in blood from infants with PPHN, both those managed conventionally (PPHN group) and those treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, as well as from infants with hy

Numerical Simulation of a High-Pressure Reactive Furnace in Recovering Sulfur from Sour Gas.

Nowadays, the Claus process is one of the most efficient procedures to recover sulfur from acid gases. In the current study, the effect of working pressure and the role of initial species (sour gas, ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbon, nitrogen, and oxygen) are analyzed using COMSOL software. The reaction occurs between acid gases, which contain 88% H2S, 10.5% CO2, 0.49% N2, and 1.01% CH4 in terms of molar percentage, and pure air. A good agreement is obtained between the numerical simulation results and experimental data. According to the results, there is a direct correlation between the co

Isolation and identification of putative precursors of the volatile sulfur compounds and their inhibition methods in heat-sterilized melon juices.

Volatile sulfur compounds, such as dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide, cause the off-flavor in heat-sterilized juices and limit the commercial production of juices. In this study, we investigated the precursors for these volatile sulfur compounds and analyzed the potential inhibition methods. Upon separation of melon juice components using resin column, the dimethyl sulfide precursor was present in the acidic fraction whereas the dimethyl trisulfide precursor was present in neutral and acidic fractions. Exogenous addition experiments indicated S-methyl methionine was

Harnessing the potential of the microbial sulfur cycle for environmental biotechnology.

The sulfur cycle is a complex biogeochemical cycle characterized by the high variability in the oxidation states of sulfur. While sulfur is essential for life processes, certain sulfur compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide, are toxic to all life forms. Micro-organisms facilitate the sulfur cycle, playing a prominent role even in extreme environments, such as soda lakes, acid mine drainage sites, hot springs, and other harsh habitats. The activity of these micro-organisms presents unique opportunities for mitigating sulfur-based pollution and enhancing the recovery of sulfur and metals. This revi

Impaired Metabolomics of Sulfur-Containing Substances in Rats Acutely Treated with Carbon Tetrachloride.

Impairment of hepatic metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids has been known to be linked with induction of liver injury. We determined the early changes in the transsulfuration reactions in liver of rats challenged with a toxic dose of CCl4 (2 mmol/kg, ip). Both hepatic methionine concentration and methionine adenosyltransferase activity were increased, but S-adenosylmethionine level did not change. Hepatic cysteine was increased significantly from 4 h after CCl4 treatment. Glutathione (GSH) concentration in liver was elevated in 4~8 h and then returned to normal in accordance with the ch

Roles for nucleotide phosphatases in sulfate assimilation and skeletal disease.

Sulfur is an essential element to all kingdoms of life and is used in essential cellular processes including the synthesis of sulfur-containing amino acids, maintenance of cellular redox states, and incorporation into various metabolites. Inorganic sulfate, the most abundant source of environmental sulfur, is metabolized into two commonly formed nucleotide precursors: adenosine 5’-phosphosulfate (APS) and 3’-phosphoadenosine 5’-phosphosulfate (PAPS). Donation of activated sulfur occurs through a broad range of enzymatic reactions many of which consume PAPS thereby producing 3’-phosphoadenosine

Deaminative metal-free reaction of alkenylboronic acids, sodium metabisulfite and Katritzky salts.

A convenient and efficient approach to (E)-alkylsulfonyl olefins via a metal/light-free three-component reaction of alkenylboronic acids, sodium metabisulfite and Katritzky salts is described. This alkylsulfonylation proceeds smoothly with a broad substrate scope, leading to diverse (E)-alkylsulfonyl olefins in moderate to good yields. During the process, excellent functional group tolerance is observed and sodium metabisulfite is used as the source of sulfur dioxide. Mechanistic studies show that the alkyl radical generated in situ from Katritzky salt via a single electron transfer with alken

One-pot quantitative hydrolysis of lignocelluloses mediated by black liquor.

Black liquor from the kraft process facilitates quantitative biomass hydrolysis converting cellulose and hemicellulose into organic acids such as lactic acid (~50%), and lignin into small molecular aromatics, without gasification and black tar formation. Oxygen transfer between lignin and carbohydrates may be the mechanism. With this method, three tons of lignocellulosic biomass can potentially produce up to one ton of lactic acid, and one ton of small molecular aromatics. This novel usage of black liquor is environmentally viable because it is accompanied by significant emission reduction of

Potential bronchoconstrictor stimuli in acid fog.

Acid fog is complex and contains multiple stimuli that may be capable of inducing bronchoconstriction. These stimuli include sulfuric and niric acids, the principal inorganic acids present; sulfites, formed in the atmosphere as a reaction product of sulfur dioxide and water droplets; fog water itself, a hypoosmolar aerosol; the organic acid hydroxymethanesulfonate, the bisulfite adduct of formaldehyde; and gaseous pollutants, e.g., sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, ozone. Given this complexity, evaluation of the respiratory health effects of naturally occurring acid fog requires assessment o

Glass for parenteral products: a surface view using the scanning electron microscope.

The scanning electron microscope was utilized to explore the internal surface of glass ampuls and vials used in parenteral products. The surface topography of USP Type I borosilicate glass containers was viewed after exposure to "sulfur," ammonium bifluoride, and sulfuric acid treatments. The scanning electron micrographs showed startling differences in the appearance of the surface regions. "Sulfur treatment" of ampuls was associated with a pitting of the surface and the presence of sodium sulfate crystals. The sulfur treatment of vials altered the glass surface in a characteristically differ

Microdetermination of diosgenin from fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seeds.

Sulfuric acid hydrolysis of steroidal glycosides of Amber fenugreek was studied by capillary gas chromatographic analysis of diosgenin [(25R)-spirost-5-en-3-ol] and isomeric spirostadiene artifacts from 100 mg samples of seed material. Following extraction with 80% ethanol, highest recoveries of diosgenin occurred when hydrolyses were conducted in sulfuric acid, prepared at 1 molar (M) concentration in water containing 60-80% 2-propanol. Compared to a previous method with aqueous hydrochloric acid, the selected conditions of hydrolysis at 100 degrees C for 2 h with sulfuric acid in 70% 2-propa

Sulfur Compounds in Regulation of Stomatal Movement.

Sulfur, widely present in the soil and atmosphere, is one of the essential elements for plants. Sulfate is a dominant form of sulfur in soils taken up by plant roots. In addition to the assimilation into sulfur compounds essential for plant growth and development, it has been reported recently that sulfate as well as other sulfur containing compounds can also induce stomatal movement. Here, we first summarized the uptake and transport of sulfate and atmospheric sulfur, including H2O and SO2, and then, focused on the effects of inorganic and organic sulfur on stomatal movement. We concluded all

Dimethyl Phthalate Disrupts Sulfur Cycling and Triggers Toxic H2S Pollution in Sludge Anaerobic System.

Dimethyl phthalate (DMP), a crucial plastic additive widely employed, has been detected in sewers, sediments, and sewage sludge at elevated levels, particularly in regions where active sulfur cycling occurs. However, the effect of DMP on anaerobic sulfur conversion, especially toxic H2S production, has not been documented. This study aimed to explore the fate of DMP in anaerobic system and its influence on sulfur conversion through both batch and long-term tests using sludge as substrate. Experimental results showed that sludge can effectively adsorb DMP, which conformed to the Freundlich mode

Elemental sulfur reduction to H2S by Tetrahymena thermophila.

Eukaryotic nucleocytoplasm is believed to be descended from ancient Archaea that respired on elemental sulfur. If so, a vestige of sulfur reduction might persist in modern eukaryotic cells. That was tested in Tetrahymena thermophila, chosen as a model organism. When oxygenated, the cells consumed H2S rapidly, but when made anoxic they produced H2S mostly by amino acid catabolism. That could be inhibited by adding aminooxyacetic acid, and then H2S production from elemental sulfur became more evident. Anoxic cell lysates produced H2S when provided with sulfur and NADH, but not with either substr
