Severe oesophageal constriction due to an aberrant right subclavian artery with Kommerell's diverticulum in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 6-month-old female cat with a history of chronic regurgitation presented with weight loss. CT angiography (CTA) showed severe constriction of the oesophagus due to an aberrant right subclavian artery and Kommerell's diverticulum. The cat was surgically treated and remained clinically normal. More than 1 year after surgery, the general condition of the cat was stable and body weight had increased. RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: This case report describes the clinical findings and surgical management of a cat diagnosed with severe oesophageal constriction caused by an aberrant

Canine brain tumours: a model for the human disease?

Canine brain tumours are becoming established as naturally occurring models of disease to advance diagnostic and therapeutic understanding successfully. The size and structure of the dog's brain, histopathology and molecular characteristics of canine brain tumours, as well as the presence of an intact immune system, all support the potential success of this model. The limited success of current therapeutic regimens such as surgery and radiation for dogs with intracranial tumours means that there can be tremendous mutual benefit from collaboration with our human counterparts resulting in the de

Interventional thoracoscopy in small animals.

Thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive technique for viewing the internal structures of the thoracic cavity. The procedure uses a rigid telescope placed through a portal and positioned in the thoracic wall to examine the contents of the pleural cavity. Once the telescope is in place, either biopsy forceps or an assortment of surgical instruments can be introduced into the thoracic cavity through adjacent portals in the thoracic wall to perform various diagnostic or surgical procedures. The minimal invasiveness of the procedure, the rapid patient recovery, and the diagnostic accuracy make thoraco

Chemotherapy for intrathoracic cancer in dogs and cats.

The thoracic cavity contains numerous tissue types from which tumors may arise. Broadly speaking, the cavity is comprised of the pleural surfaces, the mediastinum and its enclosed viscera, and the lungs. Neoplasms arising from these structures are frequently advanced at the time of diagnosis, and surgery is rarely curative for malignant processes. Although reports describing anticancer chemotherapy use in dogs and cats for tumors of the thoracic cavity largely have been anecdotal, as advances are made in the chemotherapeutic management of comparable tumors in human cancer patients and as veter

3D Slicer open-source software plug-in for vector-based angle calculation of canine hind limb alignment in computed tomographic images.

BACKGROUND: Severe and complex angular limb deformities in dogs require accurate morphological assessment using diagnostic imaging to achieve successful orthopedic surgery. Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to overcome projection errors in two-dimensional angular measurements of dog hindlimb alignment. Three-dimensional volume rendering (VR) techniques permit virtual positioning and variable projection, but the final CT-image that defines the projection plane for angular measurements remains two-dimensional. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to develop a true three-dimensional open-source techniqu

Intraluminal unilateral ectopic ureter associated to ectopic ureterocele in a female dog - clinical, diagnostic and surgical aspects.

Ureteral ectopia is a congenital malformation characterized by the abnormal location of the distal aspect of one or both ureters, being classified according to its anatomical path as intramural or extramural. The most common clinical sign is urinary incontinence. The presence of other associated urogenital anomalies, such as hydroureter, hydronephrosis and ureterocele are possible, being the last one a rare condition characterized as a cystic dilation of the submucosal layer of the distal ureter. The diagnosis is based on patient history, clinical signs and imaging exams. Treatment consists in

Endoscopy-assisted resection of a sphenoid-wing meningioma using a 3D-printed patient-specific pointer in a dog: A case report.

A 9-year-old female mixed-breed dog presented for treatment of a presumed sphenoid-wing meningioma. Clinical signs included tonic-clonic seizures lasting <1 min, which had started 3 months previously. The physical examination results were unremarkable. An eccentrically located neoplastic cystic structure in the right sphenoid bone region suggestive of a meningioma and peritumoural brain oedema was observed in pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Prior to surgery, a three-dimensional (3D) patient-specific pointer (PSP) was designed using computed tomography (CT) images and computer-a

Surgical management of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome: An update on options and outcomes.

Dogs with a brachycephalic conformation often experience a collection of abnormalities related to their craniofacial conformation, which can lead to a variety of clinical signs such as stertor, exercise intolerance, respiratory distress, and gastrointestinal signs such as regurgitation, among others. This collection of abnormalities is termed brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). With the rise in popularity of several brachycephalic breeds, veterinarians and veterinary surgery specialists are seeing these dogs with increasing frequency for surgical and medical treatment of these c

Resolution of nonurine transudative pleural effusion in a cat after removal of a hydronephrotic kidney.

CASE DESCRIPTION A 3-year-old spayed female Bengal cat was evaluated because of a history of bilateral pleural effusion and hydronephrosis of the right kidney. CLINICAL FINDINGS Cytologic analysis of a pleural fluid sample revealed characteristics of a pure transudate with a high percentage of lymphocytes. Results of fluid biochemical testing were not consistent with urine or chyle. Serum biochemical analysis and echocardiography yielded no evidence of hypoalbuminemia or high hydrostatic pressure secondary to cardiac disease. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed hydronephrosis of the right kidne

[Arthroscopic surgery--current status and perspectives].

The morbidity after arthroscopic surgery is low; a hospitalization is not necessary in most patients. The possible operations of the knee joint include removal of loose bodies, resections on meniscus, plicae and synovium as well as more complicated procedures as suturing of a meniscus, total synovectomy and operations in patients with osteoarthritis. The advantage of the arthroscopic operation compared with arthrotomy is well documented in meniscal resection (shorter treatment, stay in the hospital and sick leave, reduced costs, and nevertheless excellent results) whereas the indication and cl

Incidence of postoperative acute kidney injury in dogs without pre-existing renal disease.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined as a sudden reduction in renal function, characterized by a rapid increase in serum creatinine (sCr) ≥ 0.3 mg/dL within 48 h with or without azotemia (sCr ≥ 1.7 mg/dL) and/or oliguria (urinary output <1 mL/kg/h for more than 6 h). Acute kidney injury is associated with increased mortality, prolonged hospitalization, and higher costs in both human and veterinary medicine. This study aimed to determine the incidence of postoperative AKI in dogs without pre-existing renal disease. A total of 170 dogs, admitted for elective surgery (ASA I-II) at a single univer

The influence of the duration of the preoperative time spent in the veterinary clinic without the owner on the psychogenic and oxidative stress in dogs.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the dog's long-term separation from its owner in the novel environment on the occurrence of psychogenic and oxidative stress. Group I dogs (n=9) were brought to the veterinary clinic and stayed in a kennel room for 12 hr before the surgery, and group II dogs (n=9) -for 10 min before the surgery. Physiological parameters (heart rate (HR) (beats/min) and respiratory rate (fR) (breaths/min)) were measured and blood sampling was done 12 hr before the surgery (T0) for group I dogs and 10 min before the surgery (T1) for both groups dogs. Suspected canine primary lymph node mast cell tumor.

An 8-year-old spayed female Chihuahua dog was diagnosed with a suspected primary mast cell tumor (MCT) of the left popliteal lymph node (LN). Physical examination, computed tomography, and focused hind-limb ultrasound failed to identify a primary integumentary MCT. Asymmetry of the ipsilateral medial iliac LN was identified on abdominal ultrasound. Surgical excision of the left popliteal and left medial iliac LN was completed without complication. Histologic assessment confirmed overt MCT effacement of both LN. Postoperatively, the dog received adjuvant chemotherapy (vinblastine and prednisone
