Trichinella spiralis Infecting Wild Boars in West, Southwest, and Northwest of Romania: Evidence of an Underrated Risk.

The species of the genus Trichinella are etiological agents distributed all over the world and are able to infect mammals, birds, and reptiles. Trichinella spiralis is the species most adapted to domestic and wild pigs and is also the most important etiological agent of trichinellosis. The wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a nocturnal omnivorous mammal belonging to the Suidae family. S. scrofa has a great appetite and its diet includes a variety of small prey such as mice, rats, and other rodents, as well as carcasses of larger animals. The aim of this study was the identification and the molecular ch…

Sperm Nuclei Analysis and Nuclear Organization of a Fertile Boar-Pig Hybrid by 2D FISH on Both Total and Motile Sperm Fractions.

A wide range of mammalian hybrids has recently been found by chance or through population-screening programs, but studies about their fertilizing capacity remain scarce and incomplete. Most of them are assumed to be sterile due to meiotic arrest caused by the failure of chromosome pairings. In this study, we evaluated both sperm meiotic segregation, by 2D fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis, and sperm quality (Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay) by flow cytometer in a fertile boar-pig hybrid (2n = 37,XY) originating from a Nero Siciliano pig breed (Sus scrofa domesticus) and a wild …

Diethylnitrosamine (DENA) recapitulates formation of hepatic angiosarcoma in pigs.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Primary hepatic angiosarcoma is a rare tumor with poor prognosis. The aim of this study was to generate a new angiosarcoma model to improve research on hepatic angiosarcoma. METHODS: Pigs sus scrofa were treated with different regimens of diethylnitrosamine (DENA). Tissues were analyzed by histology and immunohistochemistry. Serum parameters were determined. Angiosarcoma tissue was investigated for chromosomal aberrations by aCGH analysis. RESULTS: Animals of almost all different treatment regimens developed a multitude of variable liver lesions. Different tumor types such …

Different Roles of Wild Boars and Livestock in Salmonella Transmission to Humans in Italy.

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) is the most widely distributed large wildlife mammal worldwide. To investigate the transmission of Salmonella enterica amongst wild boars (Sus scrofa), humans, and livestock, we compared via pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and whole genome sequences the isolates of S. enterica serovar Typhimurium (biphasic and monophasic variants) and Enteritidis collected from wild boars, food-producing animals, and human patients in Emilia-Romagna region (Northern Italy) between 2017 and 2020. Specifically, we analysed 2175 isolates originated from human (1832), swine (117), bovine (1…

Molecular detection of Babesia and Hepatozoon species and morphological characteristics of Babesia species in Japanese wild boars.

We investigated intraerythrocytic Babesia parasites in 21 Japanese wild boars, Sus scrofa leucomystax, captured in Wakayama Prefecture on the mainland from 2008 to 2009 and in 31 Japanese wild boars from 2011 to 2013 in Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island, Japan. We detected small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene (SSUrDNA) fragments of a Babesia species in 17 boars from Wakayama and 18 boars from Kochi. The nearly full SSUrDNA sequence (1669 bps) of this species was determined. A FASTA search revealed that the SSUrDNA sequence of the Babesia sp. in Japanese wild boars was the most homologo…

Molecular differentiation of Sarcocystis miescheriana and Sarcocystis suihominis using a new multiplex PCR targeting the mtDNA cox1 gene in wild boars in southern Italy.

The increase of wild boar populations density and their meat consumption across Europe could expose humans to a plethora of foodborne diseases as sarcocystosis, caused by the zoonotic protozoan Sarcocystis suihominis. Humans become infected by eating raw or undercooked pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) containing S. suihominis sarcocysts. Despite this, to date very few data are available on the risk of infection by this parasite to wild boar (Sus scrofa) meat consumers. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the occurrence of Sarcocystis spp. in wild boars from southern Italy, applying both histolo…

Immunosuppressive regimens in porcine transplantation models.

Pigs, or Sus scrofa domestica, are commonly used animal models in translational transplantation research due to their anatomical, physiological, and immunological similarities to humans. In solid organ transplantation studies, immunosuppressive medications may be administered to pigs to prevent rejection. We provide an overview of the immunosuppressive regimens used in allogeneic solid organ transplantation in pigs, including heart, lung, kidney, bowel and cotransplanted organs and focus on the use of tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and corticosteroids.

The first occurrence of Trichinella murrelli in wild boar in Iran and a review of Iranian trichinellosis.

Trichinella larvae isolated from the thigh muscle of a wild boar, Sus scrofa, captured from Gilan Province, northern Iran, was processed for DNA analysis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for amplification of the 5S rDNA fragment demonstrated a 700 bp band on agarose gel. Analysis of DNA sequencing by BLAST confirmed the isolate as T. murrelli. This report constitutes the first recorded occurrence of T. murrelli in Asia, and also the first occurrence in a wild boar host.

Vampire Bats and Wild Boars in Northern Paraná: One Health Perspectives on a Novel Report.

Since its introduction to the Americas in the early 20th century, the wild boar (Sus scrofa) has affected Brazilian ecosystems and may have contributed to the spread of zoonotic diseases, especially rabies. Its interactions with the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) can increase the risk of rabies transmission. These interactions remain poorly documented, particularly in the São Francisco Forest State Park, a conservation unit in the north of Paraná. In this study, we used camera traps to record three interactions between D. rotundus and S. scrofa, revealing a potential new route for zoon…

Molecular evidence of Rickettsia slovaca in spleen of wild boars in northeastern Algeria.

Using molecular assays, Rickettsia slovaca, the agent of a spotted fever group rickettsiosis resulting in scalp eschar and neck lymphadenopathy after tick bite, was assessed in 92 spleens recovered from 117 wild boars hunted in the far northeast of Algeria. Rickettsia slovaca was detected in 5.4% of tested wild boar spleens. The presence of R. slovaca DNA in boar spleens questions the relationship that may exist between this bacterium and Sus scrofa algira, and its role in human infections.

A serologic survey of selected viral and bacterial diseases of European wild hogs, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA.

Blood samples were collected from 108 wild hogs (Sus scrofa) from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), USA, February to July 1990. We found no antibodies for swine brucellosis, pseudorabies, bovine virus diarrhea virus or porcine rotavirus infection. Antibody titers to porcine parvovirus were found in 15 (14%) samples and antibody to one or more leptospiral serovars was found in 48 (44%) samples. Thirty-nine (89%) of the 44 positive samples reacted to all five leptospiral serovars tested.

The first case of myiasis caused by Lucilia caesar (L.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a wild boar, Sus scrofa L. (Artiodactyla: Suidae) is described. The myiasis occurred in October 2019 in Southern Italy and the identification of the agent was based on adult male morphology. The wild boar had a wound on its right side, near the neck, which was largely infested by larvae. The ecology, distribution and current literature status about cases of animal myiasis by this species is also included.

Trichinella nativa in sylvatic wild boars.

Of 17 Trichinella isolates from domestic pigs and wild boars (Sus scrofa) in regions where Trichinella nativa is widespread among sylvatic animals, two wild boars from Estonia were found to be naturally infected with this Trichinella species. The other 15 animals were infected with Trichinella spiralis. Trichinella nativa is tolerant to freezing when in the muscles of carnivores. The biological characteristics and temperature tolerance of this species in swine need to be further investigated if pork is certified for consumption following freezing.
