OBJECTIVES: This paper deals with the characterization of outdoor swimming pool waters to study the occurrence of trihalomethanes (THMs) and to assess the health risk of THMs exposure for three population groups (male, female, and children). The concentration of total THMs and individual species (chloroform, bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform) were monitored during the seven months of 2022 in outdoor swimming pools in the coastal area of Montenegro.
METHODS: A total of 73 water samples from outdoor swimming pools were collected and tested for the content o

Bacteria often swim in complex environments where surfaces are ubiquitous and rarely flat. Surface topography and curvature can strongly affect bacterial motility, with important consequences for surface exploration, adhesion, and biofilm formation. Here, we investigate the swimming of a non-tumbling Escherichia coli bacterium near an undulating no-slip surface using hydrodynamic simulations of a detailed model bacterium. The latter is described by a rigid spherocylindrical cell body and flexible flagella modeled with the Kirchhoff rod theory, while the surrounding fluid is simulated using the

BACKGROUND: Population-based drowning fatality rates inadequately measure drowning risk as they do not account for aquatic exposure. While surveys can estimate aquatic exposure at swimming pools, region-specific swimming pool counts provide an alternative measure since they are obtained from administrative databases.
METHOD: Swimming pool drowning deaths for all ages in metropolitan Houston from 2016 to 2022 were documented from probabilistically linked data. The number and types of in-ground swimming pools were compiled using county tax records, pool inspections, written requests, and Intern

INTRODUCTION: Black swimming dots (BSDs) are a frequent concern for scientists performing cell culture experiments. Despite this, there is very limited literature on this phenomenon. There is one report of Achromobacter species as the causative organism of black swimming dots in cell culture. In this study, we have revealed a 16S ribosomal RNA (bacterial rrs gene) full gene-based confirmation of black swimming dots as Bradyrhizobium species in our cell culture experiments. Bradyrhizobium is primarily a soil-dwelling bacteria, carrying out nitrogen fixation in legume roots.
METHODOLOGY: After

Spinal cord injuries (SCI) often result in impaired motor functions. To quantify these impairments, swimming patterns were analyzed in individuals with SCI. Water provides a unique rehabilitation environment where buoyancy supports weight-bearing activities and can reveal deficits that might otherwise go unnoticed. Data were collected of 30 individuals with chronic, motor-incomplete SCI and 20 healthy controls during breaststroke swimming on a kickboard. Using eight wearable inertial sensors attached to the lower limbs, we captured detailed kinematic data. Spatiotemporal parameters were then c

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions, photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) and swimming (SW), administered individually or in combination, in alleviating neuropathic pain, enhancing motor function, and preserving skeletal muscle morphology in a rat model of chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve. Male Wistar rats (n = 8 per group) with chronic constriction injury (CCI)-induced neuropathic pain were randomly assigned to receive photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), swimming exercise (SW), a combination of both therapies, or no treatment (contr

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a major contributor to chronic low back and neck pain. Current treatment strategies include conservative pain management and surgical intervention based on clinical presentation. Physical exercise plays an increasingly important role in conservative care, offering both preventive and therapeutic benefits. Among available exercise options, swimming is often considered beneficial due to its low impact nature and supportive biomechanical properties. Its buoyancy reduces spinal load, while water resistance and rhythmic movements help improve core strength

Bacterial biofilms have been implicated in several chronic infections. After initial attachment, a critical first step in biofilm formation is a cell inducing a surface-sensing response. In the Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, two second messengers, cyclic diguanylate monophosphate (c-di-GMP) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), are produced by different surface-sensing mechanisms. However, given the disparate cellular behaviors regulated by these second messengers, how newly attached cells coordinate these pathways remains unclear. Some of the uncertainty rel

Since assessing aerobic capacity is key to enhancing swimming performance, a simple and widely applicable technology should be developed. Therefore, we aimed to noninvasively visualize real-time changes in sweat lactate (sLA) levels during swimming and investigate the relationship between lactate thresholds in sweat (sLT) and blood (bLT). This prospective study included 24 university swimmers (age: 20.7 s ± 1.8 years, 58% male) who underwent exercise tests at incremental speeds with or without breaks in a swimming flume to measure heart rate (HR), bLT, and sLT based on sLA levels using a water

INTRODUCTION: Human diving reflex is a well-studied phenomenon. However, very little is known about the possible relationship between augmented diving reflex and autonomic dysfunction.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied a group of four swimmers who underwent a diving reflex test as part of the examination due to symptoms related to autonomic dysfunction during swimming. The control group comprised 11 healthy swimmers with no history of these symptoms. A standardized diving reflex test was performed for each athlete in both groups. Hemodynamic profiles, including heart rate, stroke volume, an

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common debilitating degenerative disease of the elderly. We aimed to study the therapeutic effects of combining curcumin and swimming in monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced OA in a rat model. The rats were divided into 5 groups (n = 9). Group 1 received saline and served as a control group. Groups 2-5 were injected intra-articularly in the right knee with 100 μL MIA. One week later, groups 3 and 5 were started on daily swimming sessions that gradually increased to 20-mins per session, and for groups 4 and 5, oral curcumin was administered at a dose of 200 mg/kg for 4

Immersion pulmonary edema, more commonly referred to as swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE), is a well-documented condition believed to be a result of immersion physiologic condition that is characterized by a peripheral-to-central redistribution of blood volume. It disproportionally affects young, healthy athletes with no clinically overt cardiovascular or pulmonary conditions. We present four cases of healthy athletes with previously documented SIPE, who participated in Institutional Review Board-approved clinical studies that examined the pathophysiologic condition and prevention of SIP

BACKGROUND: Apnea training enhances bradycardia and improves competitive apnea performance and has been proposed as a training method for other sports, such as swimming. We evaluated the effects of apneic underwater swimming, i.e., dynamic apnea (DYN), in 9 competitive swimmers (TR) who completed ten DYN sessions over 2 weeks.
METHODS: TR performed pre- and post-training tests including a static apnea test with continuous heart rate (HR) and peripheral oxygen saturation measurements, all-out 50m and 100m freestyle tests and an all-out DYN test. Control groups were competitive swimmers (SC; N.

PURPOSE: Although wearing a wetsuit while swimming, when permitted, is primarily for safety reasons (ie, to protect against hypothermia), changes in buoyancy, biomechanics, and exercise performance have been reported. This narrative review covers the benefits of different wetsuit models on performance in swimming and triathlon.
METHODS: A computer search of online databases was conducted to locate relevant published research until March 2021. After the screening process, 17 studies were selected for analysis.
RESULTS: Most of the selected studies involved pool swimmers or triathletes complet

Swimming pools are crowd-gathering places that are associated with numerous outbreaks of water-borne diseases. Herein, we investigated the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and bacterial communities in swimming pools and determined the influencing factors and potential human exposure. Sixteen swimming pools with different bather loads (0.01-0.16 person/m2·h) were investigated. Water samples were collected, before opening and after closing of the facilities, from six swimming pools, and skin samples were collected from volunteers. Comprehensive approaches, high-throughput qPCR

Moderate exercise reduces arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate (HR) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and changes neurotransmission in medullary areas involved in cardiovascular regulation. We investigated if regularly swimming exercise (SW) affects the cardiovascular adjustments mediated by opioidergic neuromodulation in the RVLM in SHR and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Rats were submitted to 6 wks of SW. The day after the last exercise bout, α-chloralose-anesthetized rats underwent a cannulation of the femoral artery for AP and HR recordings, and Doppler flow probes were placed around the
