The Impact of Anosognosia on Clinical and Patient-Reported Assessments of Psychiatric Symptoms in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric symptoms are widely prevalent in Huntington's disease (HD) and exert greater impact on quality of life than motor manifestations. Despite this, psychiatric symptoms are frequently underrecognized and undertreated. Lack of awareness, or anosognosia, has been observed at all stages of HD and may contribute to diminished patient self-reporting of psychiatric symptoms. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the impact of anosognosia on performance of commonly used clinical rating scales for psychiatric manifestations of HD. METHODS: We recruited 50 HD patients to undergo a form

Assessment of the relationship between knee ultrasound and clinical symptoms in patients with thyroid dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) abnormalities were associated with thyroid dysfunction. METHODS: This study included 109 patients with thyroid diseases, including thyroid dysfunction or autoimmune thyroid disease. Patients were categorized as euthyroid, hypothyroid, or hyperthyroid based on their recent thyroid function tests. To evaluate MSUS, an experienced rheumatologist examined the presence of synovial fluid, synovial hypertrophy, and grade of inflammation in both gray-scale and power Doppler scans of the knee joint. Associations between MSUS abnormaliti

Assessment of Respiratory Health Symptoms and Asthma in Children near a Drying Saline Lake.

Residents of the Imperial Valley, a rural, agricultural border region in California, have raised concerns over high rates of pediatric asthma symptoms. There is an urgent need to understand the influences and predictors of children's respiratory health in Imperial Valley. We assessed the impacts of sociodemographic, lifestyle, and household factors on children's respiratory health and asthma prevalence by administering a survey to parents of elementary school children (n = 357) in northern Imperial Valley. We observed an overall asthma prevalence of 22.4% and respiratory symptoms and allergies

Development of a questionnaire to assess dietary restrictions runners use to mitigate gastrointestinal symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Exercise induced gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms can plague athletes, especially runners. Sport nutrition recommendations are nutrient rather than foods focused and do not adequately address strategies to reduce GI symptoms. The objective was to develop a valid and reliable questionnaire to evaluate pre-training and pre-racing voluntary food restrictions/choices, reasons for avoiding foods, and gastrointestinal symptoms in endurance runners. METHODS: Validity testing occurred through four Registered Dietitians, three of whom possess Master's degrees, and a dietetic trainee who prov

Assessing Acute Symptoms Related to Occupational Exposures Among Nail Salon Technicians.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional field study evaluated potential associations between acute symptoms among nail technicians and exposure of chemical hazards in New Jersey salons. METHODS: In 2016, an in-person safety and health survey was conducted. Data were gathered on symptoms, demographics, work history, tobacco use, area and/or task ventilation, use of personal protective equipment, and safety training. Workplace hazards were identified by observational survey during site visit walk-throughs. RESULTS: Of the 68 respondents from 40 participating salons whose owners agreed to participate (

Is Urodynamics Necessary when Assessing a Patient with Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms?

Urodynamics can distinguish bladder outlet obstruction from detrusor underactivity. Clear identification of the mechanism of a man's voiding symptoms can help give the best chance of good outcome from surgery. Publication of results from the UPSTREAM study will help in establishing the exact place for urodynamic testing in male lower urinary tract symptoms.

Assessing mood symptoms through heartbeat dynamics: An HRV study on cardiosurgical patients.

BACKGROUND: Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is reduced both in depression and in coronary heart disease (CHD) suggesting common pathophysiological mechanisms for the two disorders. Within CHD, cardiac surgery patients (CSP) with postoperative depression are at greater risk of adverse cardiac events. Therefore, CSP would especially benefit from depression early diagnosis. Here we tested whether HRV-multi-feature analysis discriminates CSP with or without depression and provides an effective estimation of symptoms severity. METHODS: Thirty-one patients admitted to cardiac rehabilitation after firs

Esophageal Body Motility for Clinical Assessment in Patients with Refractory Gastroesophageal Reflux Symptoms.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Little data exists about esophageal body dysmotility and reflux patterns in refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (RGERD) patients off therapy. We aimed to evaluate effects of esophageal body dysmotility on reflux parameters in RGERD patients by combining impedance-pH monitoring and high-resolution manometry (HRM). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the impedance-pH data and HRM metrics in patients with refractory gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. Impedance-pH monitoring and manometric data were compared between 2 groups: ineffective esophageal motility (IEM) and norma

Can women accurately assess the outcome of medical abortion based on symptoms alone?

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate whether women undergoing medical abortion can accurately assess abortion outcome based on symptoms alone. Our secondary aim was to identify predictors of medical abortion failure. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a case-control study of women undergoing medical abortion from January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2005, who were 63 days' gestation or less and received 200 mg mifepristone followed by 800 mcg of vaginal misoprostol 6-72 h later. Cases were defined as women who required uterine evacuation for a retained gestational sac or ongoing

Assessing posttraumatic stress disorder using the trauma symptom checklist for young children.

This pilot study assessed the performance of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children (TSCYC) in correctly classifying the presence or absence of PTSD, as determined by the Diagnostic Interview for children and Adolescents-Parent (DICA-P). Participants included 34 children, ages 4 to 12, referred for outpatient treatment. The 11 PTSD-positive participants scored significantly higher than the 23 PTSD-negative participants on scales assessing intrusive symptoms, arousal symptoms, and total posttraumatic stress (PTS). A model including the PTS-Intrusion, PTS-Avoidance, and PTS-Arousal scal

Assessing gene-environment interactions on anxiety symptom subtypes across childhood and adolescence.

Consistent evidence shows both genetic and stress-related risks on child and adolescent anxiety, yet few studies have considered the degree to which genetic effects are moderated by stress (gene-environment interaction). We used longitudinal data from both a child and adolescent sample of twins to examine three novel issues on the presence of gene-environment interaction on anxiety symptoms. First, we assessed moderation of genetic risks on anxiety symptoms by negative life events in each age group. Second, by distinguishing between "stable" and "age-specific" genetic factors, we explored the

Ultrasound assessment of pelvic organ prolapse: the relationship between prolapse severity and symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: At present little information is available to help define whether a certain degree of pelvic organ prolapse is clinically relevant. We performed a retrospective study to define cut-offs for significant pelvic organ descent on the basis of prolapse symptoms. METHODS: At a tertiary urogynecological center, 735 women with symptoms of lower urinary tract dysfunction and prolapse were seen for interview, clinical examination, multi-channel urodynamics and ultrasound imaging, while supine and after voiding, for prolapse quantification. Women with multi-compartment prolapse, i.e. those in

Assessing neuropsychiatric symptoms in context: Integrating standardized and ecological approaches for better care.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common, disabling, and burdensome core features of dementia that often dominate the disease presentation and trajectory. Despite their prevalence and clinical significance, the assessment of NPS remains challenging in clinical practice. Traditional standardized assessment instruments, while widely used, are limited by their reliance on caregivers' retrospective recall, single time-point measurements, lack of direct observation, and limited ability to capture the NPS dynamic, fluctuating and context-dependent nature. A critical caveat of standardized assessme

Assessment of Spatial Presence Experiences and Symptoms of Cybersickness in Dynamic and Static Virtual Environments.

Background/Objectives: Virtual reality (VR) is becoming an increasingly popular therapeutic tool, with immersion being a key component that provides users with a sense of spatial presence in virtual environments. However, comprehensive research is lacking on the impact of static versus dynamic VR environments on changes in perceived spatial presence. The aim of this study was to assess the experience of spatial presence in virtual environments and to examine the relationship between spatial presence and users' emotional responses during exposure to static and dynamic VR scenarios. The study al
