Parental experiences of rapid exome sequencing in cases with major ultrasound anomalies during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Adding rapid exome sequencing (rES) to conventional genetic tests improves the diagnostic yield of pregnancies showing ultrasound abnormalities but also carries a higher chance of unsolicited findings. We evaluated how rES, including pre- and post-test counseling, was experienced by parents investigating its impact on decision-making and experienced levels of anxiety. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was adopted. Participating couples (n = 46) were asked to fill in two surveys (pre-test and post-test counseling) and 11 couples were approached for an additional interview. RESULTS

Social isolation differentially affects anxiety and depressive-like responses of bulbectomized mice.

Social isolation in rodents may interfere in their behavioural responses on paradigms used to test anxiety- and depressive-like states. Herein we study the influence of social isolation upon the behavioural responses of olfactory bulbectomized mice (OBX). In the open-field test (OFT), social isolation enhanced OBX-induced hyperactivity and exploratory behaviour. However, OBX-induced anxiety in the OFT (central activity) was less apparent after isolation, due to the increased level of anxiety showed by the sham-isolated counterparts. In the novelty-suppressed feeding (NSF), isolation derived in…

Sex differences in the modulation of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors by matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression levels in mice.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is one of the main causes of disability worldwide, but its etiopathology remains largely unknown, although several hypotheses have been proposed. Recent studies suggest a potential role for matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) in depression, as it is overexpressed in the plasma of depressed patients and normalizes following chronic antidepressant treatment. This study aimed to characterize anxiety and depression-like behaviors in transgenic MMP-9 mice, as well as the expression of different neuroplasticity markers associated with depression, in both sexes.

Effects of tryptophan depletion on anxiety, a systematic review.

Vulnerability markers for onset of anxiety disorders are scarce. In depression, patients at risk tend to respond with a negative mood to 'acute tryptophan depletion' (ATD), while healthy volunteers and current patients do not. The serotonergic system thus provides indications for vulnerability for depression. It is unknown whether ATD reveals vulnerability in anxiety too. This study systematically reviews the effects of ATD on anxiety and assesses whether challenging anxiety modifies the response. PubMed, Embase and PsychInfo were systematically searched up to April 2019 for studies in which (

Investigation of the relationship between anxiety and heart rate variability in fibromyalgia: A new quantitative approach to evaluate anxiety level in fibromyalgia syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is identified by widespread musculoskeletal pain, sleep disturbance, nonrestorative sleep, fatigue, morning stiffness and anxiety. Anxiety is very common in Fibromyalgia and generally leads to a misdiagnosis. Self-rated Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and doctor-rated Hamilton Anxiety Inventory (HAM-A) are frequently used by specialists to determine anxiety that accompanies fibromyalgia. However, these semi-quantitative anxiety tests are still subjective as the tests are scored using doctor-rated or self-rated scales. METHOD: In this study, we investigated

Methamphetamine effects in zebrafish (Danio rerio) depend on behavioral endpoint, dose and test session duration.

Research using zebrafish (Danio rerio) has begun to provide novel information in many fields, including the behavioral pharmacology of drug use and misuse. There have been limited studies on the effects of methamphetamine in adult zebrafish and the parameters of exposure (dose, test session length) have not been well-documented. Behavior following drug exposure is generally measured during relatively short sessions (6-10 min is common) in a novel tank environment. Many procedural variables (isolation, netting, novel tank) elicit anxiety-like behavior that is most apparent during the initial po

The effects of ketamine on sexual behavior, anxiety, and locomotion in female rats.

The present study characterized the effects of ketamine on sexual behavior and anxiety in female rats. In Experiment 1, female subjects received an injection of ketamine (10.0mg/kg) or saline 30min prior to a sexual partner-preference test during which each female subject was given the opportunity to interact with a female stimulus or a sexually vigorous male stimulus. Immediately afterwards, female subjects were tested for locomotion in an open field test. Ketamine-treated subjects spent significantly more time with the male stimulus than saline-treated subjects. No other measures of mating b

Gender differences in associations between pain-related anxiety and alcohol use among adults with chronic pain.

Background: Over 100 million Americans live with chronic pain, and adults with chronic pain may be more likely to experience alcohol-related problems or Alcohol Use Disorder. An evolving conceptual model posits that bidirectional effects between pain and alcohol exacerbate both pain and drinking. Pain has been shown to motivate alcohol urge and consumption, and drinking for pain-coping predicts escalations in alcohol use over time. Pain-related anxiety is a transdiagnostic vulnerability factor that has been implicated in both pain and substance-related (i.e., tobacco, opioids, cannabis) outcom

Regular Aerobic Voluntary Exercise Increased Oxytocin in Female Mice: The Cause of Decreased Anxiety and Increased Empathy-Like Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: It is known that regular physical activity reduces anxiety. Low anxiety levels affect mood, emotions, and empathy. Oxytocin is a powerful hormone that regulates social interaction, sexual reproduction, maternal–infant bonding, milk release, empathy, and anxiety. Empathy is an important behavior in the living community; and also important for sportsmen during sportive competition and daily living life, because sportsmen are also role model of people. AIMS: To investigate the effects of voluntary physical activity on oxytocin, anxiety, and empathy levels as well as the relationship

Agomelatine, venlafaxine, and running exercise effectively prevent anxiety- and depression-like behaviors and memory impairment in restraint stressed rats.

Several severe stressful situations, e.g., natural disaster, infectious disease out break, and mass casualty, are known to cause anxiety, depression and cognitive impairment, and preventive intervention for these stress complications is worth exploring. We have previously reported that the serotonin-norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor, venlafaxine, as well as voluntary wheel running are effective in the treatment of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in stressed rats. But whether they are able to prevent deleterious consequences of restraint stress in rats, such as anxiety/depressio

Enhanced social reward response and anxiety-like behavior with downregulation of nucleus accumbens glucocorticoid receptor in BALB/c mice.

Social anhedonia is a psychological state with difficulty in experiencing pleasure from social interactions and is observed in various diseases, such as depressive disorders. Although the relationships between social reward responses and anxiety- and depression-like behaviors have remained unclear, a social reward conditioned place preference (SCPP) test can be used to analyze the rewarding nature of social interactions. To elucidate these relationships, we used 5-week-old male mice of AKR, BALB/c, and C57BL/6J strains and conducted behavioral tests in the following order: elevated plus-maze t

In-depth behavioral characterization of the corticosterone mouse model and the critical involvement of housing conditions.

Depression and anxiety are disabling and highly prevalent psychiatric disorders. To better understand the neurobiological basis of mood and anxiety disorders, relevant animal models are needed. The corticosterone mouse model is frequently used to study depression. Chronic stress and accompanying glucocorticoid elevation causes pathological changes in the central nervous system, which are related to psychiatric symptoms. Exogenous administration of corticosterone is therefore often used to induce depressive-like behavior in mice and in some cases also features of anxiety-like behavior are shown

Performance-enhancing effects of caffeine and L-Theanine among Iranian elite wrestlers: a focus on cognitive and specific physical performance.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine is a well-known ergogenic aid that can enhance physical and cognitive performance. However, it often induces side effects, such as anxiety and overstimulation, which can be problematic in high-pressure sports like wrestling. L-theanine, a non-stimulant amino acid found in tea, may help mitigate these effects by promoting a calm yet focused mental state. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of caffeine, L-theanine, and their combination on physical performance, cognitive function, and anxiety in elite male wrestlers. METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-control

The thalamus network seems responsible for the depression and anxiety affecting risk-taking.

Risk-taking refers to making decisions in risky situations that involve both high risk and high payoff. Previous studies have found that depressed and anxious individuals often exhibit impaired function in risk-taking. However, the neural mechanisms responsible for how depression and anxiety affect individuals' risk-taking are still unknown. Using a sample of 245 participants, functional and structural brain scanning using a 3T MRI machine was performed, along with the depression anxiety stress scale (DASS) test, as well as the balloon analog risk task (BART) test. The results showed that depr
