Predictors of infant mortality are usually based on the underlying causes reported on infant death certificates. Death certificates also contain space for "Other significant conditions contributing to the death but not resulting in the underlying cause." OBJECTIVE: To document the clinical, laboratory, and epidemiologic characteristics of pediatric patients with murine typhus.
DESIGN: Pediatric patients were diagnosed using serologic testing, and clinical, laboratory, and epidemiologic data were retrospectively reviewed.
SETTING: Of 97 patients, 77 (79%) were identified and treated as inpatients and 20 (21%) were treated as outpatients; most resided in south Texas.

Screening for breast and prostate cancer is underutilized, and according to previous studies, physicians often fail to comply with recommended screening guidelines. We surveyed Texas physicians to determine their screening behaviors and their compliance with National recommendations. For women aged 40 through 49 years, 75.5% of respondents recommend mammography every 1 to 2 years, and 8.4% suggest it annually. Available evidence shows that the benefits of routine oxytocic administration in the third stage of labor far outweigh the potential risks. In 1990, T.F. Baskett, MD, reviewed the routine use of oxytocic drugs by Canadian obstetricians in the management of the third stage of labor. An epizootic of encephalomyelitis attributable to western equine encephalitis virus was identified in emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) from several flocks in western Texas in July 1992. Data from case-control studies of respiratory cancer conducted in the Texas Gulf Coast region between 1975 and 1980 were used to examine the effects of smoking and alcohol on laryngeal cancer risk. Analyses were limited to living white males, aged 30-79, which included 151 histologically confirmed incident laryngeal cancer cases and 235 population-based controls.
