Deep brain stimulation of the ventroanterior and ventrolateral thalamus improves motor function in a rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease with affected individuals exhibiting motor symptoms of bradykinesia, muscle rigidity … h and 100 uA cathodic stimulation in the VA (n = 7), VL (n = 8) or at the interface between the two thalamic nuclei which we refer to as the VA|VL (n = 12). With whole-cell patch-clamp recordings, we noted that VA|VL stimulation in vitro increased the number of induced action potentials in proximal neurons in both areas albeit VL neurons transitioned from burstin …

Quantitative susceptibility mapping and a nonlinearly transformed atlas for targeting the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus in a patient with tremor and thalamic hypertrophy: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: The ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) of the thalamus is a surgical target for treating various types of tremor. Because it is … referred to the QSM images to localize the decreased susceptibility area within the lateral ventral thalamic nuclei to target the Vim. In addition, the nonlinearly transformed Vim atlas images complemented the imaging-based targeting. The radiofrequency thalamotomy at the modified Vim target relieved the tremor completely. LESSONS: A combination of QSM and nonli …

'Asleep' deep brain stimulation targeting ventral intermediate thalamus in essential tremor: systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate thalamus (VIM) is a safe and effective treatment of essential tremor (ET). Traditionally microelectrode recording (MER) was used to confirm lead placement in the target structure in the awake state. More recently, lead placement using indirect anatomical targeting with the patient under general anaesthesia has been described and implemented in many centres, and is referred to as 'asleep DBS'. We performed a systematic review of asleep DBS procedures for ET to assess the outcomes of this technique. METHODS: A systematic rev

Thalamic reticular nucleus in Caiman crocodilus: Relationship with the dorsal thalamus.

The thalamic reticular nucleus was investigated in one group of crocodilians, Caiman crocodilus. This neuronal aggregate is composed of two parts: a compact portion and a diffuse region made up of scattered cells within the forebrain bundles. In Caiman, both the lateral and medial forebrain bundles project to the telencephalon and the thalamic reticular nucleus is associated with each fiber tract. In the lateral forebrain bundle, the compact area is termed the nucleus of the dorsal peduncle (dorsal peduncular nucleus) while the diffuse part is called the perireticular area. In the medial foreb

Contralateral hyperhidrosis in anterior thalamic infarction.

A 62-year-old male complained of contralateral hyperhidrosis following an anterior thalamic infarction without the presence of a hypothalamic lesion. We speculated that the thalamus could share sudomotor fiber components in the crossed contralateral inhibitory sweating pathway.

Deep brain stimulation for essential tremor.

Essential tremor is the most common tremor disorder and is characterized by a postural and kinetic tremor. Most commonly, the disease involves the upper extremities, although other body parts may be affected. Essential tremor is seen most often in adults and may markedly limit abilities to perform daily activities. Medications often fail to control the tremor adequately. In the past, ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (VIM) thalamotomy was the surgery of choice for medication-resistant patients with disabling tremor. With technological advances, deep brain stimulation (DBS) to the VI

Projections from the lateral mammillary nucleus to the anterodorsal thalamic nucleus in the rat.

There has been an abundance of research on the connections of the mammillary bodies but the projections from the lateral mammillary nucleus to the anterodorsal thalamic nucleus has remained a gray area due to a dearth of material which directly addresses the details of this pathway. This study seeks to further define the nature of this particular nerve connection within the mammillothalmic tract. The technique employed is fluorescent nerve tract tracing using two fluorescent tracers implanted separately into each anterodorsal thalamic nucleus then followed retrogradely to the soma of the neuro

Visceral pain evoked by thalamic microstimulation in humans.

Microstimulation within and below the ventrocaudal nucleus (Vc) in the human thalamus typically evokes non-painful, paraesthetic cutaneous sensations. We now describe cases in which thalamic microstimulation evoked visceral pains. Data were obtained during stereotactic thalamotomy procedures. Patient 211 had a history of essential tremor. At a site 0.5 mm ventroposterior to Vc, microstimulation elicited pain described as 'deep, internal, in a straight line like my appendix pain years ago'. Patient 153 had a history of post-stroke hemibody pain. In each of two trajectories, at sites approximate

The effects of lesions of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis on sodium appetite.

Lesions of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis result in decrements in sodium ingestion. Specifically, sodium ingestion that is aroused by mineralocorticoids, in addition to sodium depletion, was reduced in rats with large lesions of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. Need-free salt ingestion was also reduced. These results suggest that the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis may be involved in the regulation of sodium appetite.

Percentage of intrinsic and relay cells in a thalamic nucleus projecting to general cortex in reptiles, Caiman crocodilus.

Small injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) restricted solely to the general cortex in reptiles, Caiman crocodilus, resulted in retrogradely labeled cells located bilaterally in the nucleus dorsolateralis anterior of the thalamus. Larger cortical injections of HRP labeled greater numbers of nucleus dorsolateralis anterior cells. HRP injections designed to label as much cortex as possible resulted in very few unlabeled ipsilateral neurons in the nucleus dorsolateralis anterior. The percentage of these unlabeled cells was less than 1%. These data indicate that the nucleus dorsolateralis ant

Bearing of the diencephalon on the taxonomic status of the Tupaioidea.

As the taxonomic status of the Tupaioidea within the Order Primates is still unsettled, an attempt is being made to throw some light on this problem through investigations on the nuclear configuration and fibre connections of the diencephalon of the tree-shrew. Several tree-shrew species, particularly Tupaia glis and Urogale everetti have been involved in this qualitative study, and comparisons of diencephalic structures among the tree-shrews species, and with the Insectivores and Prosimii have been made. Thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei which show more advanced development than others, are nu…

[Lesion of the lateral dorsal thalamic nucleus and alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome].

The authors report a clinico-pathological study dealing with the limbic nuclei of the thalamus in 11 cases of Korsakoff syndrome of alcoholic aetiology. There is no parallelism between the involvement of the latero-dorsal nucleus (L.D.), the medio-dorsal nucleus, the pulvinar and the importance of the retrograde amnesia. The mamillary bodies are always affected. The latero-dorsal nucleus was modified in 9 cases out of 11, the medio-dorsal in 7 cases and the pulvinar in 6 cases. In contrast, the anterior nucleus is normal. The frequency of the involvement of the L.D. is an argument to relate th

The role of the medial lemniscal and spinocervicothalamic pathways on tactile reactions in cats.

The role of dorsal column (DC)-medial lemniscus and spinocervicothalamic systems on tactile reactions, placing and tactile localization (turning to localize a point touched on the body) was studied in cats with spinal and bulbar lesions. The cats with vision occluded were trained preoperately on horizontal bars for tactile localization. The bulbar lesions of cervicothalamic tract (CTT), which anatomically overlaps with gracile nuclear efferent projection, resulted in permanent loss of tactile placing and localization in contralateral hindlimb. Section of dorsal half of lateral funiculus at C3,

Numbness in the tip of the tongue and lower lip caused by thalamic hemorrhage.

Although patients with isolated oral syndrome or facial sensory loss following stroke of thalamic ventroposteromedial (VPM) nucleus have been reported, there have been no reports of numbness in the tip of the tongue and lower lip. Furthermore, symptoms in the tip of the tongue caused by stroke are typically characterized as gustatory sensory disturbances. A 62-year-old hypertensive man experienced an acute onset of severe numbness in the left tip of the tongue and ipsilateral lower lip. Neurological examination revealed no other abnormalities except for the aforementioned numbness. Head comput

Neuropsychological consequences of right thalamic haemorrhage: case study and review.

The neuropsychological performance of a right-handed man is examined following haemorrhage from the anterior sections of the right thalamus. A pattern of temporally graded retrograde amnesia, global anterograde amnesia, impaired short-term memory, behavioural changes, and severe executive deficits were identified. The deficits evident in this case are discussed in reference to existing neuropsychological literature regarding the consequences of thalamic infarction. It is proposed that damage to the anterior thalamic nuclei results in a frontal dysexecutive syndrome and that such a dysexecutive…

Mapping the human thalamus: a historical review of thalamic atlases from histology to modern neuroanatomy.

This review outlines the development of thalamic atlases from early post-mortem 2D histological maps to modern 3D multimodal atlases used in neuroscience and clinical practice. Given the central role of the thalamus in sensory processing, movement, and cognition, accurate anatomical mapping has been essential for both research and neurosurgical targeting. By synthesizing historical and modern approaches, we highlight the methodological advances, such as the development of thalamus-specific MRI sequences, that have improved the precision of thalamic nuclei delineation. We focus on open-source a…
